1. Hydroregime (duration, frequency and predictability of the aquatic phase) is a key feature of temporary aquatic habitats that not only moulds community structure and diversity (species sorting) but also life history characteristics of the inhabitants (natural selection). However, since hydroregime is a complex multidimensional entity that cannot be estimated from short term observations, morphometric variables are commonly used as proxies for hydroregime, making it impossible to separate effects of habitat size and hydroregime on biota.
2. We have used a simple hydrological model, validated with recent (average r2 = 96%) and historic water level observations (average r 2 = 81%), to accurately reconstruct hydroregime based on historical rainfall and evaporation data in a cluster of 36 temporary rock pools in central South Africa.
3. Using the model output, we demonstrated that both hydroregime and habitat size had unique and shared effects on temporary pool biota and that these effects depended on the dispersal modes of the taxa. Model-generated hydrological data explained more variation in community patterns than short-term observations of hydroperiod. Hydroregime was more important for passive dispersers than for active dispersers that can migrate when pools dry up. Basin morphometry was a relatively poor predictor of pool hydroregime. We concluded that simple modelling may greatly improve the resolution of studies linking hydroregime to biological variables.
4. An accurate account of hydrological variation provides a firm foundation to understand community and population structure and dynamics in temporary aquatic habitats. Since many of these habitats have been destroyed or degraded in recent decades, our findings and tools may contribute to the development of reliable conservation guidelines. 相似文献

In ethics, the use of empirical data has become more and more popular, leading to a distinct form of applied ethics, namely empirical ethics. This ‘empirical turn’ is especially visible in bioethics. There are various ways of combining empirical research and ethical reflection. In this paper we discuss the use of empirical data in a special form of Reflective Equilibrium (RE), namely the Network Model with Third Person Moral Experiences. In this model, the empirical data consist of the moral experiences of people in a practice. Although inclusion of these moral experiences in this specific model of RE can be well defended, their use in the application of the model still raises important questions. What precisely are moral experiences? How to determine relevance of experiences, in other words: should there be a selection of the moral experiences that are eventually used in the RE? How much weight should the empirical data have in the RE? And the key question: can the use of RE by empirical ethicists really produce answers to practical moral questions? In this paper we start to answer the above questions by giving examples taken from our research project on understanding the norm of informed consent in the field of pediatric oncology. We especially emphasize that incorporation of empirical data in a network model can reduce the risk of self‐justification and bias and can increase the credibility of the RE reached. 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The technique of in vivo brain microdialysis rapidlyis becoming a popular tool for research on the neurochemicalbasis of physiological and behavioral functions. The presentstudy describes the application of microdialysis to investigatethe endogenous release of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA)and glutamic acid in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of hamsters. There were apparent circadian patterns of release of both ofthese neurosecretions, with peak levels occurring during thedark phase. Pharmacological manipulations of serotonin releaseand reuptake, using tetrodotoxin and citalopram, respectively, provided evidence that the nocturnal increase in 5-HIAA reflectsan increase in serotonergic synaptic activity, rather than intraneuronalmetabolism of unreleased serotonin. These results illustratethe usefulness of the microdialysis technique for studies onthe neurochemistry of central pacemaker function. 相似文献

SUMMARY.
- 1 The combined effect of nitrate and phosphate concentrations on the yields of five selected strains of Stigeoclonium is demonstrated in a synthetic medium as well as in natural waters.
- 2 Increase of yield after addition of one nutrient depends on the concentration of the other. A graphic growth model based on the experiments in synthetic medium is presented, which allows prediction of yields at different combinations of nitrate and phosphorus concentrations.
- 3 In general, yields in natural waters before and after addition of nitrate and/or phosphate agree with the model. In some cases, other limiting factors appear to be involved.
- 4 The possible effects of nitrogen and phosphorus limitation on the phosphorus and nitrogen metabolism of the alga are discussed.
- 5 Neither an exponential model (Baule-Mitscherlich) nor a hyperbolic model adequately describe the interaction demonstrated between nitrogen and phosphorus limitation.

Flow Cytometric Determination of Relative Nuclear DNA Contents in Bicellulate and Tricellulate Pollen 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Nuclear DNA content in mature pollen was measured with a flowcytometer Pollen of Lilium longiflorum, Dendranthema grandiflora(syn Chrysanthemum monfolium) and Zea mays was chopped and stainedwith the DNA fluorochrome DAPI DNA levels, expressed as arbitraryC values, were compared with those of nuclei isolated from leafor root material of the same plants In mature tricellulate pollen the generative cell is dividedafter second pollen mitosis into two sperm cells Tricellulatepollen from maize and chrysanthemum gave rise to one large 1Cpeak and, only in the case of chrysanthemum, a much smallerone at the 2C level These results suggest that the haploid nucleiof the vegetative as well as both sperm cells in tricellulatepollen are arrested in the G1 stage of nuclear division Thesmall 2C peak in the case of chrysanthemum probably arose froma fraction of pollen with the sporophytic chromosome number(2n pollen) In contrast to this, mature bicellulate lily pollengave rise to two identical peaks at the 1C and the 2C levelFrom this result it was concluded that in bicellulate pollen, the 1C peak is caused by the signal of the haploid vegetativenucleus arrested in the G1 stage of nuclear division, whereasthe 2C peak originates from the haploid generative nucleus whichhas already undergone DNA synthesis and is arrested in G2 Lilium longiflorumThunb, lily, Dendranthema grandiflora Tzelev (syn Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat ), chrysanthemum, Zea maysL, maize, male gametophytic cells, vegetative cells, generative cells, sperm cells, unreduced pollen, sporophytic cells, relative nuclear DNA contents, replication stage 相似文献

The impact of nitrogen deposition on carbon sequestration in European forests and forest soils 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
WIM DE VRIES GERT JAN REINDS PER GUNDERSEN† HUBERT STERBA‡ 《Global Change Biology》2006,12(7):1151-1173
An estimate of net carbon (C) pool changes and long‐term C sequestration in trees and soils was made at more than 100 intensively monitored forest plots (level II plots) and scaled up to Europe based on data for more than 6000 forested plots in a systematic 16 km × 16 km grid (level I plots). C pool changes in trees at the level II plots were based on repeated forest growth surveys At the level I plots, an estimate of the mean annual C pool changes was derived from stand age and available site quality characteristics. C sequestration, being equal to the long‐term C pool changes accounting for CO2 emissions because of harvest and forest fires, was assumed 33% of the overall C pool changes by growth. C sequestration in the soil were based on calculated nitrogen (N) retention (N deposition minus net N uptake minus N leaching) rates in soils, multiplied by the C/N ratio of the forest soils, using measured data only (level II plots) or a combination of measurements and model calculations (level I plots). Net C sequestration by forests in Europe (both trees and soil) was estimated at 0.117 Gton yr?1, with the C sequestration in stem wood being approximately four times as high (0.094 Gton yr?1) as the C sequestration in the soil (0.023 Gton yr?1). The European average impact of an additional N input on the net C sequestration was estimated at approximately 25 kg C kg?1 N for both tree wood and soil. The contribution of an average additional N deposition on European forests of 2.8 kg ha?1 yr?1 in the period 1960–2000 was estimated at 0.0118 Gton yr?1, being equal to 10% of the net C sequestration in both trees and soil in that period (0.117 Gton yr?1). The C sequestration in trees increased from Northern to Central Europe, whereas the C sequestration in soil was high in Central Europe and low in Northern and Southern Europe. The result of this study implies that the impact of forest management on tree growth is most important in explaining the C pool changes in European forests. 相似文献
