Arctic ecosystems are especially vulnerable to global climate change as temperature and precipitation regimes are altered. An ecologically and socially highly important northern terrestrial species that may be impacted by climate change is the caribou, Rangifer tarandus . We predicted the current and potential future occurrence of two migratory herds of caribou [Rivière George herd (RG) and Rivière-aux-Feuilles (RAF) herd] under a Canadian General Circulation Model climate change scenario, across all seasons in the Québec–Labrador peninsula, using climatic and habitat predictor variables. Argos satellite-tracking collars have been deployed on 213 caribou between 1988 and 2003 with locations recorded every 4–5 days. In addition, we assembled a database of climate (temperature, precipitation, snowfall, timing and length of growing season) and habitat data obtained from the SPOT VEGETATION satellite sensor. Logistic regression models indicated that both climatic and physical habitat variables were significant predictors of current migratory caribou occurrence. Migratory caribou appeared to prefer regions with higher snowfall and lichen availability in the fall and winter. In the summer, caribou preferred cooler areas likely corresponding to a lower prevalence of insects, and they avoided disturbed and recently burnt areas. Climate change projections using climate data predicted an increased range for the RAF herd and decreased range for the RG herd during 2040–2069, limiting the herds to northeastern regions of the Québec–Labrador peninsula. Direct and indirect consequences of climate change on these migratory caribou herds possibly include alteration in habitat use, migration patterns, foraging behaviour, and demography, in addition to social and economic stress to arctic and subarctic native human populations.  相似文献

We describe a new genus and new species of Cyphophthalmi from north-eastern India, from the unexplored and extremely wet region lying between China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Bhutan. Meghalaya annandalei   sp. nov. , from the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunāchal Pradesh, is an interesting Cyphophthalmi, with eyes located anterior to the ozophore, a modified tibia of leg III of males, and a robust subtriangular adenostyle. The new genus has overall resemblance to the members of the family Stylocellidae, but also has important differences for other characters, which resemble those of the members of the other tropical families Ogoveidae and Troglosironidae. The discovery of additional specimens belonging to other undescribed species indicates the need for arachnological research in that part of south-eastern Asia.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 151 , 663–670.  相似文献

The breeding systems of an obligate outbreeder (Plantago lanceolata)and an obligate inbreeder (P. patagonica) were compared. Outbreedingin the former and inbreeding in the latter species is achievedby self-incompatibility and preanthesis cleistogamy, respectively.The difference in breeding system is accompanied by a differencein the pollen output, pollen to ovule ratio, stigma and anthersize, and seed weight. P. ovata, a third species known onlyin cultivated form, is intermediate. This species has two typesof plants, some of which are protogynous and others where stigmareceptivity and anther dehiscence synchronize. Although thedifferences between the two intraspecific variants are not large,they nevertheless suggest that the species is in evolutionaryflux. Domestication is known to have modified the breeding systemin many crop plants and there is evidence that, in P. ovata,a start in this direction has already been made. Dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (DHLDH) was isolated from the mitochondria of Helicoverpa armigera, a destructive pest which has developed resistance to commonly used insecticides. The flavoenzyme was purified 17.98‐fold to homogeneity with an overall yield of 10.53% by employing ammonium sulfate precipitation, hydroxylapatite chromatography and CM‐Sephadex chromatography. The purified enzyme exhibited the specific activity of 18.7 U/mg and was characterized as a dimer with a subunit mass of 66 kDa. The enzyme showed specificity for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide – hydrogen (NADH) and lipoamide, as substrates, with Michaelis‐Menten constants (Km) of 0.083 mmol/L and 0.4 mmol/L, respectively. The reduction reaction of lipoamide by the enzyme could be explained by ping‐pong mechanism. The spectra of DHLDH showed the maximum absorbance at 420 nm, 455 nm and 475 nm. The enzyme activity was strongly inhibited by mercurial and arsenical compounds. The N‐terminal sequence of Ha‐DHLDH showed homology with those of mammalian and arthropod DHLDH. Since H. armigera has developed high levels of resistance to commonly used insecticides, biochemical properties of the metabolic enzymes such as DHLDH, could be helpful to develop insecticidal molecules for the control of H. armigera, with a different mode of action.  相似文献

In Pisum sativum, the completely penetrant leaflet development (lld) mutation is known to sporadically abort pinnae suborgans in the unipinnate compound leaf. Here, the frequency and morphology of abortion was studied in each of the leaf suborgans in 36 genotypes and in presence of auxin and gibberellin, and their antagonists. Various lld genotypes were constructed by multifariously recombining lld with a coch homeotic stipule mutation and with af, ins, mare, mfp, tl and uni-tac leaf morphology mutations. It was observed that the suborgans at all levels of pinna subdivisions underwent lld-led abortion events at different stages of development. As in leafblades, lld aborted the pinnae in leaf-like compound coch stipules. The lld mutation interacted with mfp synergistically and with other leaf mutations additively. The rod-shaped and trumpet-shaped aborted pea leaf suborgans mimicked the phenotype of aborted leaves in HD-ZIP-III-deficient Arabidopsis thaliana mutants. Suborganwise aborted morphologies in lld gnotypes were in agreement with basipetal differentiation of leaflets and acropetal differentiation in tendrils. Altogether, the observations suggested that LLD was the master regulator of pinna development. On the basis of molecular markers found linked to lld, its locus was positioned on the linkage group III of the P. sativum genetic map.  相似文献

The male gametophores of Microdus brasiliensis become fertileafter 48 d on basal medium. EDDH A increases gametophore numberand percentage of fertile gametophores at lower concentrations(10–8-10–6 mol dm–3), whereas EDTA enhancesboth the responses at all levels (10–8-10–4 moldm–3). Their iron salts increase gametophore number aswell as the number of fertile gametophores, and the latter effectis more striking. The number of antheridia per head also increaseswith Fe-EDTA, and at higher concentrations antheridia are induced4 d earlier. EDTA and Fe-EDTA-stimulated antheridia] formationis associated with a corresponding increase in endogenous iron.Copper content increases only at higher levels of EDTA and Fe-EDTA,and there is no correlation with the antheridial induction response.Salicylic acid increases the number of gametophores and thepercentage of fertile gametophores only at lower concentrations(10–8-10–6 mol dm–3), and ferric citrate doesso at all levels. With salicylic acid, antheridia are induced3 d earlier. The number of gametophores as well as the percentageof fertile gametophores increases with the increase in coppersulphate concentration. Co-addition of EDTA (10–5 moldm–3) and copper sulphate inhibits both the responsesat higher levels. Among the chelating agents tried, Fe-EDTAis most effective in enhancing antheridial production. In developing mustard (Sinapis alba L.) seedlings continuousred light acting via the agency of phytochrome stimulates therate of expansion of cotyledons. Although phytochrome actionon cotyledon expansion is evident only after 36 h from sowing,the photoresponse escapes from reversibility at about 15 h fromsowing. The time lag of 21 h between loss of photoreversibilityand the onset of photoregulated cotyledon expansion indicatesthe existence of long-lived components in the phytochrome-triggeredsignal chain. Phytochrome-regulated cotyledon expansion doesnot require the involvement of photosynthesis, as applicationof SAN 9789, an inhibitor of chloroplast biogenesis, did notaffect cotyledon expansion. The role of turgor pressure-relatedcellular parameters such as osmotic potential () cell wall extensibility(m), hydraulic conductivity (L) and yield threshold (Y) forcell expansion were examined during photoregulated cotyledonexpansion. Using the general equation of cell growth dv/dt =[Lm/(L+m)]( - Y), where dv/dt is the rate of volumetric growth,it was demonstrated that the light-mediated cotyledon expansionresults from an increase in cell wall extensibility (m). High molecular weight forms of tyrosinase have been found to be expressed during spontaneous remelanization of the amelanotic B-16 melanoma cells in culture as well as in melanotic tumors formed from amelanotic melanoma cells grown in C57BL/6J mice. Overnight extraction of the crude melanosomal fractions from such tumors and cultured melanoma cells reveal the presence of an additional DOPA-MBTH positive band well below the stacking gel. This band has been found to be α-PEP7 (antibody specific for tyrosinase) positive and α-PEPl (antibody specific for TRP-1) negative on Western blot analysis. Heat treatment at 60°C for 60 min results in the loss of this band and considerable loss of activity of the melanosomal extract. Trypsin treatment of these melanosomal extracts resulted in a minor change in the mobility of the high molecular weight band. SDS-PAGE under reduced conditions followed by Western blotting revealed that the high molecular weight band was lost and not detected by α-PEP7 or α-PEPl. These findings indicate that high molecular weight, heat sensitive and trypsin resistant forms of tyrosinase are transiently expressed in B-16 melanoma cells and tumors that are initiating remelanization following phenotypic drift towards the amelanotic state.  相似文献

It has become increasingly clear that both density-dependent and density-independent factors may influence the dynamics of mammalian populations; it remains more difficult, however, to determine which factors may play the more significant role in influencing population number in any particular case. In this paper we review published and unpublished data in an analysis of the various factors affecting population size and trend in three European species of deer: Red Deer ( Cervus elaphus ), Fallow Deer ( Dama damd ) and Roe Deer ( Capreolus capreolus). We select these species deliberately because they span a range of body size and reproductive strategy - it seems that different demographic parameters might thus play different roles in the dynamics of the three-which may also be differentially sensitive to the effects of density-dependent and density-independent factors. For each species we examine the available evidence to determine the relative roles and effects of density-dependent feedback mechanisms and density-independent factors such as climate on recruitment and mortality.
Despite differences in bionomic strategy between Red Deer (as essentially a K -strategist) and the more r-selected Roe, few differences emerge between the three species in the relative roles of density-dependent and density-independent factors - or of the stage at the life cycle at which each factor may act. Overall, however, it is clear that variation in density-independent factors, such as climate, appears primarily to affect levels of mortality within a population, while effects of density are particularly marked in relation to changes in recruitment.  相似文献
