Sorghum midge, Contarinia sorghicola Coq. (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) is the most destructive pest of grain sorghum, and host-plant resistance is an effective method of controlling this insect. We studied the antixenosis component of resistance to sorghum midge using multi-, double- and no-choice cage tests, and under multi-choice field conditions to quantify and understand the nature of antixenosis component of resistance to this insect in Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. Midge response towards sorghum panicles was influenced by panicle size and cage type used to study the orientation behaviour. Maximum number of midges were recorded at 30 and 60 min after initiating the experiment. Antixenosis shown by C. sorghicola under multi-choice field conditions to ICSV 197 and TAM 2566 was not confirmed under cage tests, while DJ 6514, AF 28 and IS 3461 were non-preferred both under field and cage conditions. Midge-resistant female parents (PM 7061 and PM 7068) were less preferred than the midge susceptible (ICSA 42 and 296A) female parents. Male-sterility did not influence host finding and acceptance by the midge females, although in one out of two tests, the maintainer lines (B-lines) were preferred over the male-sterile lines (A-lines). 相似文献

Predicted increases in water temperature in response to climate change will have large implications for aquatic ecosystems, such as altering thermal habitat and potential range expansion of fish species. Warmwater fish species, such as smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu , may have access to additional favourable thermal habitat under increased surface-water temperatures, thereby shifting the northern limit of the distribution of the species further north in Canada and potentially negatively impacting native fish communities. We assembled a database of summer surface-water temperatures for over 13 000 lakes across Canada. The database consists of lakes with a variety of physical, chemical and biological properties. We used general linear models to develop a nation-wide maximum lake surface-water temperature model. The model was extended to predict surface-water temperatures suitable to smallmouth bass and under climate-change scenarios. Air temperature, latitude, longitude and sampling time were good predictors of present-day maximum surface-water temperature. We predicted lake surface-water temperatures for July 2100 using three climate-change scenarios. Water temperatures were predicted to increase by as much as 18 °C by 2100, with the greatest increase in northern Canada. Lakes with maximum surface-water temperatures suitable for smallmouth bass populations were spatially identified. Under several climate-change scenarios, we were able to identify lakes that will contain suitable thermal habitat and, therefore, are vulnerable to invasion by smallmouth bass in 2100. Surveillance of anopheline and culicine larvae was conducted fortnightly to determine population composition and density at seven sites in the area of the Mathura Refinery, Mathura, India during 2005–2006. The correlation between population of the vectors and their habitat quality was established. Temperature (0.978 and 0.85°C), pH (0.99 and 0.95), conductivity (0.98 and 0.98 mho) and calcium ion hardness (0.978 and 0.85 p.p.m.) were positively correlated with the populations of both larval species. In contrast, the correlation coefficients between the parameters total hardness, magnesium ion hardness, biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand varied with the larval species. The anopheline larval population was dominant over the culicine population in the surveillance area. The distribution of anopheline mosquito larvae during the study period was found to be constant, and the average density of anopheline and culicine larvae was 84.70 and 15.30%, respectively, across all seven sites. Thus, the study demonstrated spatial and temporal population differences of mosquito larvae with respect to environmental factors, including water quality. 相似文献

Plants that are heterozygous for complex translocation from a small threatened population of Allium roylei Stearn from the Bani region of Jammu province (India) were analysed for karyotypic details. Somatic complements of all the plants analysed revealed heteromorphicity in one to three pairs of chromosomes. In addition, inter‐individual differences were observed regarding the presence or absence of one of the two nucleolar chromosomes, the positions that different heteromorphic chromosomal pairs occupy in the karyoidiograms and the extent of differences in various chromosomal pairs. The present paper records for the first time structural chromosomal polymorhism in A. roylei and highlights the probable mechanisms underlying the origin and establishment of this polymorphism. The extensive karyotypic variability seems to have originated through repeated interchanges involving a number of non‐homologous chromosomes. Bambusa tulda and Thyrsostachys siamensis resemble each other in having an obovate ovary which is hairy and thickened along the apex, a pseudo-crassinucellate ovule with a wide region of attachment, poorly-developed and ephemeral outer integument, an inner integument which fails to grow beyond the nucellus, 'Polygonum' type of embryo sac ontogeny, parallel orientation of embryo sac to the long axis of the ovule, multiple antipodals which retain apical position in the embryo sac even during post-fertilization phase of development, an ephemeral nucellus, relatively small bambusoid embryos, and many-layered and apically thickened pericarp. However, they differ from each other in their gynoecial structure, the extent of the development of the outer integument, organization of megaspore tetrads and development-stage-related behaviour of the inner integument in the fertilized ovules. The changes in thermophilic fungi and biochemical characteristics, during windrow and bunker stages of phase I and phase II composts, were compared in this investigation. Composts prepared by the two phase I systems differed in a number of key parameters including mean straw length, population of Scytalidium thermophilum, dry matter, conductivity, nitrogen dry matter, ammonia, fibre content and ash. S. thermophilum populations in phase I composts were significantly higher in windrow compared to bunker‐composted materials as a result of the larger high temperature (65‐80°C) core in bunker treatment, which inhibited microbial activity. Assessment of the composts for loss of matter during composting has revealed that the bunker system can conserve fresh matter better than the windrow production system, possibly due to lower microbial activities during bunker composting. The productivity of the phase II composts prepared from windrow and bunker systems was compared in trials using commercial growers. 相似文献
