The diet of King Penguins Aptenodytes patagonica at Possession Island was studied in February 1989 by analysis of 20 stomach contents collected from adult birds, just before they fed their single chicks. The mean mass of the samples was 1.84 kg, equivalent to 15% of the unladen adult body-mass. Fish accounted for 99.8% and squids for 0.2% by mass. The main prey were mesopelagic myctophid fish which live in dense shoals and perform a daily vertical migration. Subadults/adults of Electrona carlsbergi and juveniles and subadults/adults of Krefftichthys anderssoni represented 73.7 and 13.4% of the diet by mass, respectively. No difference was found in the diet of male and female King Penguins. Comparison of individual samples suggests that these birds catch a large quantity of fish from only a limited number of shoals. The mean caloric content of the food was 7 kJ/g wet mass. The total energy requirement of each chick during its initial period of growth was estimated to amount to 328,000 kJ, equivalent to 55 kg of food. SUMMARY. Wastwater (English Lake District) was sampled at monthly intervals over 1 year to compare the seasonal and vertical extents of floristic and physiological variation in an oligotrophic phytoplankton assemblage. Cellular photochemical capacity (CPC) was measured by in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence before and after addition of the photosynthetic inhibitor 3(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethyl urea (DCMU). The CPC index proved useful to define an activity coefficient for the chlorophyll levels measured in boiling methanol extracts. Large variations in CPC over time or depth were generally correlated with major shifts in phytoplankton species composition. Highest CPC values were recorded during autumnal mixing. Both CPC and floristic composition of the community demonstrated as great a variation over depth during a period of stratification as that recorded over time throughout the year. Investigation of the dispersal of Liriomyza trifolii in a 1–2 ha chrysanthemum greenhouse indicated that the average distance flown by female flies was greater than that flown by male flies. However, flies of both sexes were found at the furthest distance from the release point (102 m) which indicates that flies in the greenhouse could be considered to be a single inter-breeding population. When the data were fitted to a generalised distance-dispersal model, examination of the parameters revealed density decreased with distance more rapidly for males than females. Also, the model showed that males tended to be slightly more attracted to each other than were females. Melanin production in mammals is regulated at a variety of levels (tissue, cellular, and subcellular), and many gene loci are involved in the determination of color patterns directed by the melanocyte. Many of the genes involved in these complex processes have now been cloned, and even the simplest mutation can lead to dramatic changes in the phenotype of the individual. Many, if not all, of the pigment related genes have pleiotropic effects on the development and differentiation of the organism, and perhaps because of this, the melanocyte is evolving as an important model for the study of gene regulation and action at the functional level. Mice with Robertsonian (Rb) translocations have been discovered in some 45 populations in Europe. In Belgium, we have observed either Rb(4.12) in a heterozygous or homozygous state (2 n = 39 and 38 respectively), or Rb(4.12) homozygous with a heterozygous Rb(5.10), or both fusions in a homozygous state (2 n = 37 and 36, respectively). Some locations are highly polymorphic and hétérozygotes are found frequently. These observations suggest that the Rb population in Belgium could be of recent origin and probably is the result of introgression from Alsace (France) or Germany. 相似文献

Robertsonian (Rb) translocation is a common chromosomal rearrangement in the house mouse. In free-living populations, 79 fusions with different combinations of chromosomes 1 to 18 have been found in some 45 populations. An updated list of these fusions is presented and analysed in order to reveal the possible processes by which the fusions spread within or among populations. A widespread hypothesis is that when two populations share the same fusion, it can be assumed that they have a common ancestor. This can serve as the basis for the use of the cladistic methods. While I present such an analysis on the updated list of Rbs, I also point to the problems associated with it in this case because many fusions have multiple origins and exchanges of Rbs between populations are frequent. I have tried to use a different approach, based on a critical and quantitative evaluation of the hypothesis of common ancestry. Assuming that the 153 possible fusions have an equal probability of occurrence, I give the formula to compute the probability that populations share a given number of fusions by chance alone. Only when this probability is lower than a chosen level (say 5%) can the populations be inferred to have a non-independent origin (i.e. they have a common ancestor or they have exchanged chromosomes by introgression). This probability measure is then used as a distance estimate to show the relationship between all the Rb populations. This analysis suggests that although some Rbs must have occurred more than once, most of the populations have non-independent origins. Almost all the populations from northern Africa to Belgium and Germany appear to have close karyotopic relationships and form a major group. Clearly independent Rb populations are mainly found in the periphery of this major group, for example in Scotland, Denmark and Spain.
