1. Parasitoids are known to utilise learning of herbivore‐induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) when foraging for their herbivorous host. In natural situations these hosts share food plants with other, non‐suitable herbivores (non‐hosts). Simultaneous infestation of plants by hosts and non‐hosts has been found to result in induction of HIPVs that differ from host‐infested plants. Each non‐host herbivore may have different effects on HIPVs when sharing the food plant with hosts, and thus parasitoids may learn that plants with a specific non‐host herbivore also contain the host. 2. This study investigated the adaptive nature of learning by a foraging parasitoid that had acquired oviposition experience on a plant infested with both hosts and different non‐hosts in the laboratory and in semi‐field experiments. 3. In two‐choice preference tests, the parasitoid Cotesia glomerata shifted its preference towards HIPVs of a plant–host–non‐host complex previously associated with an oviposition experience. It could, indeed, learn that the presence of its host is associated with HIPVs induced by simultaneous feeding of its host Pieris brassicae and either the non‐host caterpillar Mamestra brassicae or the non‐host aphid Myzus persicae. However, the learned preference found in the laboratory did not translate into parasitisation preferences for hosts accompanying non‐host caterpillars or aphids in a semi‐field situation. 4. This paper discusses the importance of learning in parasitoid foraging, and debates why observed learned preferences for HIPVs in the laboratory may cancel out under some field experimental conditions.  相似文献

Divergent natural selection is often believed to be the driving force behind phenotypic differentiation in characters related to resource acquisition, leading to trophic polymorphism in fishes. Here we use variation in the fatty acid composition of adipose and muscle tissues to look at differences in resource use by two recently described sympatric morphs of Percichthys trucha , a common freshwater fish of the Andean and Patagonian regions of South America. Because dietary fatty acids are often stored in carnivorous animals with litde modification after consumption, they can be used to infer information about dietary habits of individuals. We found that the two morphs differed in the overall composition of fatty acids in both adipose and muscle tissue, but that there were some differences in how die morphs differed in lakes from the northern vs southern part of the range. Furthermore, we found that certain fatty acids were correlated with diet as determined by gut content analysis. Consumption of anisopteran larvae was highly correlated widi 14:0 in adipose and muscle tissue; and higher levels of longer chain unsaturated fatty acids (i.e. 20 and 22 carbons) were correlated with die presence offish and also amphipods in die diets. Taken togetiier, die results suggest that diere are marked differences in die foraging ecology of die two morphs of P. trucha inhabiting southern Andean lakes.  相似文献

Corneal chromatophores of unusual morphology were used for studies on the influence of temperature on the intracellular pigment movement in two species of marine fish from different temperature zones: the tropical puffer, Canthigaster cinctus, and boreal whitespotted greenling, Hexagrammos stelleri. It was shown that both dispersion under bright illumination and aggregation at darkening are slower or decrease at lower temperatures when examined in the range of 12–27°C. The mean speed of the pigment translocations in the individual cell process was 0.38 μm/s at the highest temperature examined, with a range of 0.17–1.0 μm/s. Near the middle of the temperature range, the dynamic characteristics of cell pigment movement in tropical and boreal species were rather close, suggesting that there would be little divergent adaptations with respect to the mechanisms of the pigment transport. Corneal chromatophores are considered as a new promising model for cell motility studies.  相似文献

1. The use of spatial variables is a common procedure in ecological studies. The technique is based on the definition of a connectivity/distance matrix that conceptually defines the dispersal of organisms. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Despite the fact that a straight line may not represent the easiest dispersal path for many kinds of organisms, straight‐line distances are often used to detect patterns. We argue that other types of connectivity/distance matrices will better represent dispersal paths, such as the watercourse distance for aquatic organisms (e.g. fish, shrimps). 2. We used empirical and simulated community data to evaluate the usefulness of spatial variables generated from watercourse and overland (straight‐line) distances. 3. Spatial variables based on watercourse distances captured patterns that straight‐line distances did not, and provided better representations of the spatial patterns generated by dispersal along a dendritic network.  相似文献

Factors related to bacterial environment of nests are of primary interest for understanding the causes of embryo infection and the evolution of antimicrobial defensive traits in birds. Nest visitors such as parasites could act as vectors for bacteria and/or affect the hygienic conditions of nests and hence influence the nest bacterial environment. In the present study, we explored some predictions of this hypothetical scenario in the great spotted cuckoo (Clamator glandarius)–magpie (Pica pica) system of brood parasitism. Great spotted cuckoos visit the nests of their magpie hosts and frequently damage some of the host eggs when laying eggs or on subsequent visits. Therefore, it represents a good system for testing the effect of nest visitors on the bacterial environment of nests. In accordance with this hypothesis, we found that the bacterial load of magpie eggshells was greater in parasitized nests, which may suggest that brood parasitism increases the probability of bacterial infection of magpie eggs. Moreover, comparisons of bacterial loads of cuckoo and magpie eggs revealed that: (1) cuckoo eggshells harboured lower bacterial densities than those of their magpie hosts in the same nests and (2) the prevalence of bacteria inside unhatched eggs was higher for magpies than for great spotted cuckoos. These interspecific differences were predicted because brood parasitic eggs (but not host eggs) always experience the bacterial environments of parasitized nests. Therefore, the results obtained in the present study suggest that parasitic eggs are better adapted to environments with a high risk of bacterial contamination than those of their magpie hosts. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 836–848.  相似文献

Background. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) promote wound healing, including after radiotherapy (RT) and surgery. The use of MSCs in regenerative medicine in the context of malignancy, such as to enhance wound healing post-RT/surgery in patients with soft tissue sarcomas (STSs), requires safety validation. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of human MSCs on STS growth in vitro and local recurrence and metastasis in vivo. Methods. Human primary STS and HT-1080 fibrosarcoma lines were transduced to express luciferase/eGFP (enhanced green fluorescent protein). Sarcoma cells were co-cultured or co-injected with bone marrow–derived MSCs for growth studies. Xenograft tumor models were established with STS lines in NOD/SCID/γcnull mice. To emulate a clinical scenario, subcutaneous tumors were treated with RT/surgery prior to MSC injection into the tumor bed. Local and distant tumor recurrence was studied using histology and bioluminescence imaging. Results. MSCs did not promote STS proliferation upon co-culture in vitro, which was consistent among MSCs from different donors. Co-injection of MSCs with sarcoma cells in mice exhibited no significant tumor-stimulating effect, compared with control mice injected with sarcoma cells alone. MSC administration after RT/surgery had no effect on local recurrence or metastasis of STS. Discussion. These studies are important for the establishment of a safety profile for MSC administration in patients with STS. Our data suggest that MSCs are safe in STS management after standard of care RT/surgery, which can be further investigated in early-phase clinical trials to also determine the efficacy of MSCs in reducing morbidity and to mitigate wound complications in these patients.  相似文献

Hormones are chemical messengers released from cells to act on and control the activity of other cells. Hormonal ligands initiate their actions by interacting with receptive substances (Langley, 1906) of the target cells. These receptors are proteins that are either integral components of the cell membrane or are localized cytoplasmically within cells. Ligand-receptor interaction results in either the stimulation or inhibition of cellular activity. Since most hormones bind rather specifically to receptors possessed by their target cells, labeling of hormonal ligands can be utilized to identify and localize cells within an animal. In this report we discuss what is presently known about melanocortin receptors (MCRs) as studied by the use of labeled melanotropic peptide ligands.  相似文献

The effect of manipulations of the sink-source at the above-groundlevel and girdling of source leaves was measured in 4-month-oldplants of the CAM species Kalancho pinnata (Lam.) Pers. At thisage plants developed five pairs of leaves. The upper fourthand fifth leaf pairs were not fully expanded and behaved ascarbohydrate sinks. Removal of the developing leaves induceda progressive accumulation of glucans and sugars in the matureleaves. The titratable acidity increased during the second weekbut accumulation was less than in the control plants three tofour weeks after sink removal. Similar, but more rapid, resultswere observed in mature leaves with girdled petioles. Up tothe second night after girdling dark CO2 fixation increased, but decreased steadily afterwards. CAM Phase 4 (afternoon CO2fixation) however, was more sensitive to girdling, being reducedby 38% on the first day, and disappearing completely 3 d aftergirdling. The glucan and sugar contents of girdled leaves increasedcontinuously after treatment, but day-night changes ceased completelyon the fifth day. Girdling also caused a considerable increasein chloroplast area, with up to 80% of their internal spaceoccupied by starch grains, leading to grana distortion. In girdledleaves, or in source leaves in plants lacking aerial carbohydratesinks, dawn-dusk changes in titratable acidity started to decreasewhen the leaf glucan content exceeded 1·0 mol equivalenthexoses kg–1 dry weight. Increased sink strength throughshading of all leaves except one source leaf did not affectits CAM activity. The titratable acidity and non-structuralcarbohydrate content of the shaded mature leaves was reducedby around 55%. Removal of all the mature source leaves acceleratedthe maturation process of sink leaves, increasing titratableacidity at dawn and synthesis of glucans during the light period. The results support the hypothesis that CO2 fixation in a CAMplant is controlled by accumulation of glucans in chloroplasts. Key words: CAM, glucan accumulation, sink-source ratio, CO2 fixation  相似文献

Four fatty acids (FA, palmitic, myristic, decanoic, hexanoic) were individually conjugated to the N-terminus of the α-MSH fragment analog, H-Asp5-His6-D-Phe7-Arg8-Trp9-Lys10-NH2. This resulted in enhanced potency of the conjugates (compared to the unconjugated melanotropin analog) as determined in the lizard skin bioassay and in the mouse melanoma cell tyrosinase bioassay. The shorter conjugates of hexanoic and decanoic acid were at least equipotent to α-MSH in the lizard skin bioassay, whereas the longer myristoyl and palmitoyl analogs were 100 times less active. The myristoyl and palmitoyl conjugates exhibited a “creeping” potency in the lizard skin bioassay—that is, potency of the peptides increased with time in contact with the skins. These observations may be related to the more lipid nature of these FA-conjugates. In the tyrosinase assay, the conjugates were 10–100 times more active than α-MSH or the unconjugated analog. Each of the FA-melanotropic peptide conjugates exhibited prolonged (residual) melanotropic activity in both the lizard skin and melanoma cell bioassays. In other words, after removal of the melanotropin conjugates from contact with the skins or cells, responses were still manifested for hours or days thereafter. As little as 1 hr of contact with melanoma cells resulted in enhanced enzyme activity as measured 48 hr later. Since the conjugates, but not H-[Ast5,D-Phe7,Lys10]α-MSH5-10-NH2, exhibited prolonged activity, the conversion of reversible agonists to irreversible agonists was demonstrated.  相似文献

The life cycle of Culicospora magna (Kudo, 1920) Weiser, 1977, consists of two major developmental sequences that alternate in host individuals of successive generations, each of the sequences starting with a sporoplasm and ending with spores. The first sequence occurs in larval, pupal, and adult stages of a parental generation of the host mosquito, Culex restuans Theobald; it begins with a sporoplasm from an ingested uninucleate spore and progresses through stages in gametogony, plasmogamy, nuclear association, merogony, karyogamy, and disporous sporulation with production of binucleate spores that discharge sporoplasms into the oocytes. The second sequence occurs in egg and larval stages of a filial generation of the same host species; it begins with the binucleate sporoplasm that entered the egg, includes stages in merogony, nuclear dissociation, and mictosporous sporulation, and ends with uninucleate spores. These spores are released into the environment following death of the host and are capable of infecting new parental generation host individuals. The life cycle is conceived as an alternation of generations related to haploidy and diploidy in the nuclei, the transition from haploidy to diploidy occurring with nuclear association and the transition from diploidy to haploidy occurring with nuclear dissociation.  相似文献
