The Axenic Culture of Strains of the Various Syngens of Paramecium aurelia*

SYNOPSIS Strains of the various syngens of Paramecium aurelia respond differently to the culture media developed for Strain 299 of syngen 8. Not only is there a variety of response between the syngens, but strains belonging to the same syngen respond differently to the 3 growth media.     

THE USE OF SMALL FARM DAMS IN THE TRANSKEI AND CISKEI FOR THE PRODUCTION OF TABLE-FISH USING AISCHGRUND CARP

SUMMARY

Small stockwatering dams are usually ignored in the Transkei and Ciskei in fishfarming ventures. This paper reports on experimental results in fish production studies, using Aischgrund carp, which were obtained in the Ciskei and which indicate that economically worthwhile fish production can be achieved in such dams.     

Introductory study of an oocyte membrane protein that specifically binds vitellogenin in the crayfish Orconectes limosus

Summary

After solubilization of membranes from vitellogenic oocytes of the crayfish Orconectes limosus, a component with an apparent molecular weight between 28 and 30 kDa that specifically binds vitellogenin, could be identified by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and by electroblotting. Because this component was pronase sensitive, we assume that we are dealing with a protein. A polyclonal rabbit antiserum was produced against this component and its tissue specificity was verified.     

Development and characterization of nine polymorphic microsatellite markers in the sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus (Gobiidae)

A microsatellite‐enriched genomic library was constructed for the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas 1770), and nine polymorphic DNA microsatellite markers of high quality were successfully optimized. Characterization of 96 individuals from the Vaccarès lagoon (France) showed moderate to high levels of polymorphism (two to 54 alleles). All the markers conformed to Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and showed no evidence of null alleles, large allele dropout, stuttering and linkage disequilibrium between pairs of loci. These markers successfully amplify in three closely related species and can be employed to investigate population genetic structure and to clarify paternity in Pomatoschistus species.     

Crossability analysis in subgenus Tulipa of the genus Tulipa L.

A range of almost 1400 cross combinations has been carried out between 31 species of Tulipa subgenus Tulipa. Most of the sections are well separated reproductively from each other. The designated species aggregates in section Clusianae appeared to be intersterile. Also in section Kolpakowskianae the species, as far as used, cannot be combined. Some crosses between species of section Tulipanum succeeded. The species of sections Eichleres and Tulipa (including the cultivated tulip T gesneriana) could be combined in various ways, although the highest level of seed set was achieved within either section. The crossability data support the current taxonomic division. The level of reproductive isolation between sympatric species is discussed, and the importance of crossability studies for plant breeding in Tulipa pointed out briefly.
