Abstract.
- 1 Adaptation to life in caves, as a seasonally constant environment, is expected to affect several life history traits. In this paper we investigate the age structure and phenology of twenty-seven Dolichopodu cave cricket populations from artificial and natural caves subjected to different environmental regimes and to different availability of food resources.
- 2 Morphometric data clearly revealed the occurrence of different age structures and phenology, basically indicating two contrasting patterns.
- 3 In artificial caves, which have been colonized by Dolichopoda only in historical times and where food resources and climate are chiefly dependent upon surface environment, age structure was seasonal. In contrast, in most natural caves, where cricket colonization appears to be much older and stability of both climatic parameters and trophic resources is higher, age structure was diverse and aseasonal.
- 4 However, a seasonal age structure also occurs in natural caves characterized by either recent origin or by a low temperature regime. This suggests that age structure in Dolichopoda is influenced by historical factors, stability of food resources and also by environmental stress.

The sexually reproducing stick insects Bacillus rossius and B. grandii are sharply differentiated in terms of allozyme gene alleles; B. atticus is a polyclonal automictic parthenogen sister to B. grandii grandii. Although well differentiated for coding genes, these hybridize to produce diploid (B. whitei=rossius/grandii) or triploid (B. lynceorum=rossius/grandii/atticus) clonal forms which reproduce apomictically. Allozyme analyses of unisexual Bacillus clearly establish their relationships from bisexual ancestor species as does the existence in all of them of several clones (especially in B. atticus) whose egg maturation allows regular recombination to occur. Bacillus taxa share the Bag320 satellite DNA family within different reproductive frameworks, allowing satellite variant homogenization to be uncoupled from fixation. The nested analysis of monomers reveals different patterns of sequence diversity: sexual reproduction includes both homogenization and variant fixation, whereas the slowing of molecular turnover processes and the absence of syngamy in the parthenogens realizes a similar range of sequence diversity at the level of the individual and supra‐individual, but with no fixation. On the other hand, the actual values of sequence diversity appear mostly linked to species traits – range size, copy number of repeats, number of hybrid crosses – and possibly transposon activity, rather than to the reproductive mode. In addition, the mitochondrial genome reveals a comparable level of cox2 sequence variability in sexual and parthenogenetic taxa, thus adding to clonal variability. From Bacillus and other stick insect complexes, an overall picture of genomic diversification of parthenogens is therefore beginning to emerge. To define those animals that reproduce by non‐canonical sexual modes (i.e. parthenogenesis, hybridogenesis), but make use of egg and meiotic mechanisms, the term meta‐sexual is proposed. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. Biofuels are an important alternative, renewable source of energy in the face of the ongoing depletion of fossil fuels. Cheese whey is a dairy industry waste characterized by high lactose concentration, which represents a significant environmental problem. Bio-ethanol production by cheese whey could be an effective nonvegetable source for renewable energy production. Here, we report the isolation of a mixed microbial population, able to produce ethanol as main fermentation product from fermenting whey. The microbial consortium has been used to perform a batch fermentation of crude whey in both anoxic and hypoxic conditions. Maximum ethanol concentrations achieved in this study was obtained using the mixed culture in hypoxic conditions, grown at pH 4 and 30°C, with ethanol production yield of 60 g/L. Our research has pointed out an alternative way to both dispose and valorize cheese whey, a dairy by-product that could cause water pollution and harm to the environment if not properly treated. 相似文献

Morphometric analyses were carried out for 14 cave dwelling populations of Dolichopoda (Orthoptera, Rhaphidophoridae) from peninsular Italy belonging to the laetitiae-geniculata complex. The selected set of variables includes linear measures of body parts and appendages whose variation is expected to be adaptive and to reflect the degree of specialization to the cave environment.
Inter-population morphometric variation was compared with the patterns of allozyme variation, investigated electrophoretically in a previous paper, by means of ordination and classification multivariate analyses. Results from this comparison reject the hypothesis of parallel geographic variation of morphometric indices and allele frequencies, revealing independent trends for the two sets of characters. 相似文献
