Small pollen grains and fine particles of the organic matrix in samples of a coarse detritus mud and a blanket peal deposit were removed by sieving through 30μ polyester mesh after digestion with KOH and acetolysis during standard pollen pre-treatment. The technique enhanced the number of large pollen grains m the sample. There was also an increase in the range of taxa which produce huge grains. The method provided a means of estimating the ratio of any scarce large pollen grain to the total grain sum in samples prepared by standard methods of pre-treatment.  相似文献

A comprehensive range of phenylacetic acids substituted with nitro, halogen, methyl, amino, hydroxyl and N-acetylamino groups have been synthesized and their growth-regulating activities assessed in the wheat cylinder, pea curvature and pea segment tests. The influence of substituents on molecular shape is shown to be more important in determining activity than their effects on electron distribution. Studies with 2,6-disubstituted phenylacetic acids have indicated that the most active compounds can attain a certain spatial configuration in which one surface of the molecule, including the plane of the ring system, is flat and the carboxyl group is above with its axis of rotation perpendicular to this surface. Positional requirements for growth-regulating activity in phenylacetic acids are shown to be less important than in the phenoxyacetic and benzoic acids.  相似文献

SUMMARY: A yellow rot of fresh hens'eggs has been investigated and it is concluded that the fault is not of bacterial origin. Enlarged yolks with a high pH were frequently encountered, constituting 34% of the yellow rot eggs examined.  相似文献

Twenty-three species of Culicoides were trapped near pruritic horses during a 2-year survey in Florida. Nearly 99% of the biting midges collected were represented by Culicoides insignis Lutz, C. edeni Wirth and Blandon, C. stellifer (Coquillett), C. niger Root and Hoffman, C. haematopotus Malloch and C. venustus Hoffman. The relative contribution to the total catch by each of these species varied among collection sites. Seasonally, different species attain their largest population sizes at different times. Association of species collected in light traps with the seasonality of lesion development on the horses suggests that more than one species must be involved in causing Culicoides hypersensitivity in horses from Florida. Nulliparous females were present in most months that females of the same species were active; in some cases, species were trapped in each month of the year, particularly at the more southerly sites. The species of biting midge most likely to be involved in Culicoides hypersensitivity in horses in Florida are C. insignis, C. stellifer and C. venustus based upon their mammalophilic behaviour and seasonality.  相似文献

Snow leopards (Panthera uncia) are elusive endangered carnivores found in remote mountain regions of Central Asia. New methods for identifying and counting snow leopards are needed for conservation and management efforts. To develop molecular genetic tools for individual identification of hair and faecal samples, we screened 50 microsatellite loci developed for the domestic cat (Felis catus) in 19 captive snow leopards. Forty‐eight loci were polymorphic with numbers of alleles per locus ranging from two to 11. The probability of observing matching genotypes for unrelated individuals (2.1 × 10?11) and siblings (7.5 × 10?5) using the 10 most polymorphic loci was low, suggesting that this panel would easily discriminate among individuals in the wild.  相似文献

The suitability of PALCAM and modified Oxford (MOX) agars for recovering sublethally heat- and lactic acid-injured Listeria monocytogenes was investigated. L. monocytogenes LM101M, LM103M (meat isolates), and Scott A were suspended in tryptose phosphate broth (TPB), heated for up to 40 min at 54C, and surface plated onto tryptose phosphate agar (TPA), TPA + 4% NaCl (TPAS), PALCAM, and MOX. TPA and TPAS were used to determine total viable and sublethally injured populations, respectively. Heat-injured LM103M was recovered in the highest numbers on all media, followed by Scott A and LM101M (P<0.01). TPA allowed best recovery of all test strains, followed by PALCAMand MOX which were not different, and TPAS (P<0.01). For acid-injury studies, uninjured and heat-injured (54C for 20 min) test strains were suspended in phosphate-buffered TPB + 0.85% lactic acid (bTPBLA) at 25C for up to 24 h and plated as described above. Uninjured and heat-injured L. monocytogenes were recovered better from bTPBLA on MOX than on PALCAM (P<0.05). Heat injured L. monocytogenes LM103M was recovered better than LM101M but similar to Scott A on MOX and PALCAM (P<0.05), whereas Scott A was recovered similarly to LM101M and LM103M on MOX and PALCAM (P>0.05). Acid-injury of L. monocytogenes LM103M was enhanced by prior heat stress.  相似文献

Exposure of 3 week old field bean plants to concentrations ofSO2 from 50–500 µg m-3 induced comparable 20–25%increases in mean leaf diffusive conductance regardless of whetherthe diffusive conductances were obtained by porometric measurementor calculation from gas exchange data. The stomatal conductancesof the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces were both increasedby exposure to SO2. Microscopic examination of epidermal strips from control andpolluted plants revealed that the stomatal opening observedin treated plants was associated with a sharp reduction in theproportion of living epidermal cells adjacent to the stomata.The proportion of surviving adjacent epidermal cells was invariablysmaller on the lower epidermis and appeared to decrease as theSO2 concentration was raised from 50 to 500 µg m–3.Although the guard cells appeared to be undamaged at concentrationsbelow 200 µg m–3, structural disorganization ordeath of one or both guard cells was observed frequently ator above 500 µg m–3. The results are discussed in relation to the controversy concerningthe effects of SO2 on stomatal aperture.  相似文献

Under ideal conditions, the stratophenetic test for phyletic gradualism in fossil lineages requires nearly continuous samples of time-specific populations through rock sequences representing geologically significant periods of time. Shifting environments account for one source of 'imperfection' in the local rock record. Few species are sufficiently eurytopic to survive changing environments in a given region over a long time span. Where marine fossils are involved, independently correlated sea-level curves may be used to patch together segments of stratigraphic sections from different regions that collectively encompass the uninterrupted environment of the target species. In the Lower Silurian of Iowa, stratigraphic gaps among test samples for phyletic gradualism in pentamerid brachiopods occur wherever pentamerid communities are succeeded by deeper water stricklandiid communities or by shallower-water coral-algal communities. Correlation of sea-level curves indicates that water depth was consistently shallower in the northern Great Lakes area. Usually when stricklandiid communities replaced a pentamerid community in Iowan seas, contemporaneous pentamerid communities replaced a coral-algal community in Michigan or Ontario seas. Temporal meshing of samples from Iowa and the northern Great Lakes area (based on congruent Stricklandia and Eocoelia lineage zones) supports the hypothesis that Pentamerus oblongus evolved to Pentameroides subrectus through a gradual narrowing and loss of divergence in its outer plates. Abstract Baited and unbaited hoop-nets commonly are used to capture catfish in lotic and lentic systems. Turtle bycatch and post-capture mortality has been problematic during catfish surveys in Missouri, USA, most recently in the Gasconade River, Gasconade and Osage counties. We evaluated 3 modified hoop-net designs that would reduce turtle bycatch without reducing catfish capture in the Gasconade River during 15 May-15 July 2006 after pilot study evaluation of 5 hoop-net designs in April 2006. We deployed modified and control-nets in blocks for 48 hours to evaluate differences in turtle and catfish catch rate, as well as abundance, size, and mortality rate of turtle bycatch. The chimney design reduced turtle bycatch by 84% when compared to the control, without decreasing the number or average size of captured flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris). Environmental conditions that affected turtle mortality included Secchi disc transparency, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and stream river depth. This is the first known attempt to create turtle exclusion or escapement devices for hoop-nets deployed in freshwater systems. Biologists using hoop-nets to sample aquatic vertebrates in moderate to large river systems will benefit from our study. The application of this methodology will reduce turtle bycatch mortality, especially when sampling is conducted in high water temperatures.  相似文献
