In this study, serum copper, zinc, magnesium, iron and calcium concentrations were investigated in 40 patients with bronchial asthma (BA) and in 43 healthy subjects. Copper and calcium levels were found to be increased in patients with BA compared to the control group (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001 respectively). On the other hand, the serum zinc level was significantly lower in healthy subjects (p < 0.01). No changes were found in serum magnesium and iron levels in patients with BA compared to controls. In addition to various elements, certain serum proteins such as albumin, transferrin and ferritin were also assessed to determine whether there was a relationship between the elements and proteins in patients with BA. There was only a significant decrease in albumin concentration in patients with BA (p < 0.05). 相似文献

Fourteen thioredoxin sequences were used to construct a minimal
phylogenetic tree by using parsimony. The bacterial thioredoxins clustered
into three groups: one containing the photosynthetic purple bacteria,
Escherichia and Corynebacterium; a second containing the photosynthetic
green bacterium, Chlorobium; and a third containing cyanobacteria. These
groupings are similar to those generated from earlier 16s RNA analyses.
Animal thioredoxins formed a fourth group. The two thioredoxins of
chloroplasts (f and m) showed contrasting phylogenetic patterns. As
predicted from prior studies, spinach chloroplast thioredoxin m grouped
with its counterparts from cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae, but,
unexpectedly, thioredoxin f grouped with the animal thioredoxins. The
results indicate that, during evolution, thioredoxin m of contemporary
photosynthetic eukaryotic cells was derived from a prokaryotic symbiont,
whereas thioredoxin f descended from an ancestral eukaryote common to
plants and animals. The findings illustrate the potential of thioredoxin as
a phylogenetic marker and suggest a relationship between the animal and
f-type thioredoxins.

Wild and cultured mushrooms have been extensively used for food and medicinal purposes all around the world. However, there is limited information on chemical composition, health enhancing effects and contributions on diet of some mushrooms (e.g., Agaricus arvensis) widely distributed in many countries including United Kingdom, Australia, Turkey etc. Therefore, the present study was aimed to analyse the bioactive composition and ameliorative effects of A. arvensis via evaluating in vitro and in vivo antioxidant properties in CCl4 induced rat model. The extract exhibited higher antioxidant capacities in vitro than that of the positive control (Reishi-Shiitake-Maitake standardized extract). Administration of the extract had significant regulative effects in the levels of AST, ALT, LDH, Urea and TRIG levels according to CCl4 group. Additionally, lipid peroxidation and GSH in the brain, kidney and liver tissues was regulated by extract treated groups compared to the CCI4 group. The supplementation of the extract at the dose of 100 mg/kg regulated the levels of GST, GR, CAT and GPx enzyme activities in brain and liver, but not in kidney tissue. There was approximately three fold increase in CAT enzyme activity in kidney tissue of extract treated groups compared to Control and CCl4 groups. The extract contained a rich composition of bioactive compounds including phenolics (protocatechuic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid), volatile compounds (benzaldehyde, palmitic acid and linoleic acid) and mineral compounds (K, Si, Mg and Na). Data obtained within this study suggests that A. arvensis might be used for food industries in order to obtain nutritional products. 相似文献

Predictions of added resistance and the effective power of ships were made for varying barnacle fouling conditions. A series of towing tests was carried out using flat plates covered with artificial barnacles. The tests were designed to allow the examination of the effects of barnacle height and percentage coverage on the resistance and effective power of ships. The drag coefficients and roughness function values were evaluated for the flat plates. The roughness effects of the fouling conditions on the ships’ frictional resistances were predicted. Added resistance diagrams were then plotted using these predictions, and powering penalties for these ships were calculated using the diagrams generated. The results indicate that the effect of barnacle size is significant, since a 10% coverage of barnacles each 5 mm in height caused a similar level of added power requirements to a 50% coverage of barnacles each 1.25 mm in height. 相似文献

BackgroundProstate cancer (PCa) is the most common type of solid tissue cancer among men in western countries. In this study, we determined the levels of circulating miR-21, miR-142, miR-143, miR-146a, and RNU 44 levels as controls for early diagnosis of PCa.MethodsThe circulating miRNA levels in peripheral blood samples from 43 localized PCa patients, 12 metastatic PCa (MET) patients, and a control group of, 42 benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) patients with a total of 97 volunteers were determined the by PCR method.ResultsNo differences in the DCT values were found among the groups. In PCa and PCaMet groups the expression of miR21 and miR142 were higher compared to the BHP group. No other differences were observed among the other groups. miR21 expression in the PCa group was 6.29 folds upregulated whereas in the PCaMet group 10.84 folds up-regulated. When the total expression of miR142 is evaluated, it showed a positive correlation with mir21 and mir 146 (both p<0.001). Also, the expression of miR146 shows a positive correlation with both miR21 and miR143 (both p<0.001). Expression of miRNAs was found to be an independent diagnostic factor in patients with Gleason score, PSA, and free PSA levels.ConclusionsOur study showed that co-expression of miR21, miR-142, miR-143, and miR-146a and the upregulation of miR-21 resulted in increased prostate carcinoma cell growth. In the PCaMet group, miR21 is the most upregulated of all miRNAs. These markers may provide a novel diagnostic tool to help diagnose PCa with aggressive behavior. 相似文献

In this study, we have prepared a hydrophobic cryogel for the chromatographic separation of lipase from its aqueous solutions including single protein and protein mixture and also Yarrowia lipolytica cell extract. N‐methacryloyl‐(l )‐phenylalanine methyl ester was used as a monomer to provide the hydrophobic character to the prepared cryogels. The highest adsorption capacity was observed at pH 5.0 at 0.5 mL min?1 flow rate. The chromatographic separation of lipase was achieved from a binary mixture of lipase:bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lipase:lysozyme, and was also achieved from triple‐mixture of lipase:lysozyme:BSA by using fast protein liquid chromatography. Finally, lipase purification was performed from Yarrowia lipolytica cell extract used as a natural source. These studies have shown that the hydrophobic cryogel has good chromatographic performance for the separation and purification of lipase not only from aqueous solution, but also from cell extract as a natural source of lipase. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Quantitation of the expression of cell surface antigens has hitherto been limited to analysis by either cytotoxicity tests or radioimmune assays (5, 15). We report here the use of a new methodology to analyze and quantitate the expression of mouse histocompabililty antigens (H-2 locus) in hybrid clones and parental cell types. The binding of fluorescein-tagged antibody is measured on a cell-to-cell basis in large viable cell populations using flow microfluorimetric techniques. These techniques have been used to measure hapten and immunoglobulin binding to lymphocyte populations (8, 9, 14). However, this is the first report in which these techniques have been used to examine the expression of the H-2 locus. The advantage of this approach is twofold: first, a large and statistically significant sample population may be analyzed one cell at a time, thus revealing the fine detail of heterogeneity in the expression of the cell surface markers within a population. Second, as has been demonstrated for analysis of specific components of the immune system, this method does permit fluorescence-activated sorting of cell types according to their different surface populations (8, 9, 14). 相似文献

The role of urotensin II (U-II)--a vasoactive, mitogenic, and inotropic, peptide--in the pathophysiology of heart failure is controversial. The present study explores the relationship between plasma U-II immunoreactivity (U-IIIR) and hemodynamics in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Thirty-six patients with CAD-3 undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and 36 medical patients (MED group) with CAD-1 to CAD-3 during right heart catheterization were studied. Significant correlations were observed between pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) and U-IIIR--determined by enzyme immunoassay (EIA)--before (rho = 0.83) and after (rho = 0.6) cardiopulmonary bypass in the CABG group. With the exception of the CPB period, CABG patients with increased PCWP before CPB had higher U-II(IR) concentrations throughout the procedure. Significant correlations were observed between U-IIIR, proANP, proBNP, and mean right ventricular pressure (RVPM) in MED patients. No correlation was detectable between U-IIIR and PCWP. However, MED patients with CAD-3 (n = 13) had higher levels of U-IIIR, NTproANPIR (RIA), NTproBNPIR (EIA) and higher cardiac filling pressures than patients with CAD-1 (n = 13). These findings support an association between plasma U-IIIR levels and diastolic myocardial dysfunction in ischemic heart failure. The discrepancies regarding left and right cardiac filling pressures and U-IIIR levels in CABG and MED patients require further evaluation. 相似文献
