We investigated microbial interactions of aquatic bacteria associated with hyphae (the hyphosphere) of freshwater fungi on
leaf litter. Bacteria were isolated directly from the hyphae of fungi from sedimented leaves of a small stream in the National
Park “Lower Oder,” Germany. To investigate interactions, bacteria and fungi were pairwise co-cultivated on leaf-extract medium
and in microcosms loaded with leaves. The performance of fungi and bacteria was monitored by measuring growth, enzyme production,
and respiration of mono- and co-cultures. Growth inhibition of the fungus Cladosporium herbarum by Ralstonia pickettii was detected on leaf extract agar plates. In microcosms, the presence of Chryseobacterium sp. lowered the exocellulase, endocellulase, and cellobiase activity of the fungus. Additionally, the conversion of leaf
material into microbial biomass was retarded in co-cultures. The respiration of the fungus was uninfluenced by the presence

The chromosomal complement of the human cell line D98/AH-2 has been studied by quinacrine mustard and trypsin Giemsa banding techniques. The dispersion of chromosome counts has been shown to be due to non-random variation involving mainly a few particular chromosomes. — Twelve different marker chromosomes could be distinguished and the presumptive derivation of most of their chromosomal material from normal human chromosomes has been determined. The mode of [14C]lnicotinamide conversion to NAD and 1-methylnicotinamide and the effects of exogenous 1-methylnicotinamide on this metabolic conversion were studied using rat livers slices incubated in a chemically defined culture medium. It was shown that at the physiological nicotinamide concentrations tested (11–500 μM), 1-methylnicotinamide is preferentially produced, rather than NAD. Upon increasing nicotinamide concentration to the levels that cause cytotoxicity (1–10 mM and higher), the rate of NAD synthesis dramatically increased and reached a level 6-fold higher than that of 1-methylnicotinamide. A dose-dependent inhibition (up to 60%) of NAD synthesis was seen by the exogenous addition of 1-methylnicotinamide; the degree of inhibition is affected also by the concentrations of nicotinamide present as a precursor. A large depletion of intracellular ATP, associated with a marked accumulation of NAD, occurred in slices in response to the addition of high amounts of nicotinamide. However, loss of ATP was overcome, when nicotinamide was given together with 1-methylnicotinamide. Finally, 1-methylnicotinamide per se was proven active in regulating cell growth by comparing the cytosolic activity of 1-methylnicotinamide oxidation of cultured RLC cells with that of rat liver. Thus, the previously observed growth stimulation of hepatic cells by 1-methylnicotinamide can reasonably been explained by its ATP-sparing effect due to the inhibition of NAD synthesis, a reaction which requires ATP. 相似文献

Eye exercises have been prescribed to resolve a multitude of eye-related problems. However, studies on the efficacy of eye exercises are lacking, mainly due to the absence of simple assessment tools in the clinic. Because similar regions of the brain are responsible for eye movements and visual attention, we used a modified rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) to assess any measurable effect of short-term eye exercise in improvements within these domains. In the present study, twenty subjects were equally divided into control and experimental groups, each of which performed a pre-training RSVP assessment where target letters, to which subjects were asked to respond to by pressing a spacebar, were serially and rapidly presented. Response time to target letters, accuracy of correctly responding to target letters, and correct identification of target letters in each of 12 sessions was measured. The experimental group then performed active eye exercises, while the control group performed a task that minimized eye movements for 18.5 minutes. A final post-training RSVP assessment was performed by both groups and response time, accuracy, and letter identification were compared between and within subject groups both pre- and post-training. Subjects who performed eye exercises were more accurate in responding to target letters separated by one distractor and in letter identification in the post-training RSVP assessment, while latency of responses were unchanged between and within groups. This suggests that eye exercises may prove useful in enhancing cognitive performance on tasks related to attention and memory over a very brief course of training, and RSVP may be a useful measure of this efficacy. Further research is needed on eye exercises to determine whether they are an effective treatment for patients with cognitive and eye-related disorders. 相似文献
