Pterisanthes (Vitaceae) is a genus of c. 20 species of scandent climbers endemic to Southeast Asia with unusual lamellate inflorescences. Molecular phylogenetic analysis supports its relationship in the well‐supported VitisAmpelocissusNothocissusPterisanthes clade (i.e. the AmpelocissusVitis clade). Shoot tips and floral buds were collected from wild and greenhouse‐grown P. eriopoda at different developmental stages and were examined using epi‐illumination, light and scanning electron microscopy. Inflorescence and floral ontogeny was studied to discover how the lamellate inflorescence evolved and to make morphological comparisons to infer relationships with closely related members of Vitaceae. The second‐order branches in P. eriopoda are racemose and develop helically around the inflorescence axis in a similar fashion to Vitis and Ampelocissus. Inflorescence branching is restricted to the second order in P. eriopoda, whereas in Vitis and most Ampelocissus species subsequent branching orders culminate in the typical vitaceous determinate dichasium. In P. eriopoda subsequent lateral growth of the second‐order branches combined with the inhibition of peduncle or pedicel formation and loss of dichasial branching results in the unique lamellae in Pterisanthes, on which the floral primordia arise directly in a helical pattern. Floral development in P. eriopoda is the same as in other genera of Vitaceae examined to date with initiation of floral whorls centripetally, the calyx ring developing first and calyx lobes fused to cover the petals and stamen primordia. Given the recent phylogenetic results that placed Pterisanthes firmly within Ampelocissus, the most likely scenario is that the Pterisanthes inflorescence is derived from the thyrse of an Ampelocissus‐like ancestor and that the thyrse is a morphological synapomorphy of the Ampelocissus–Vitis clade. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 179 , 725–741.  相似文献

The discovery of phylogenetically complex, yet highly sponge-specific microbial communities in marine sponges, including novel lineages and even candidate phyla, came as a surprise. At the same time, unique research opportunities opened up, because the microorganisms of sponges are in many ways more accessible than those of seawater. Accordingly, we consider sponges as microbial fermenters that provide exciting new avenues in marine microbiology and biotechnology. This review covers recent findings regarding diversity, biogeography and population dynamics of sponge-associated microbiota, and the data are discussed within the larger context of the microbiology of the ocean.  相似文献

The functional characterization of wax biosynthetic enzymes in transgenic plants has opened the possibility of producing tailored wax esters (WEs) in the seeds of a suitable host crop. In this study, in addition to systematically evaluating a panel of WE biosynthetic activities, we have also modulated the acyl‐CoA substrate pool, through the co‐expression of acyl‐ACP thioesterases, to direct the accumulation of medium‐chain fatty acids. Using this combinatorial approach, we determined the additive contribution of both the varied acyl‐CoA pool and biosynthetic enzyme substrate specificity to the accumulation of non‐native WEs in the seeds of transgenic Camelina plants. A total of fourteen constructs were prepared containing selected FAR and WS genes in combination with an acyl‐ACP thioesterase. All enzyme combinations led to the successful production of wax esters, of differing compositions. The impact of acyl‐CoA thioesterase expression on wax ester accumulation varied depending on the substrate specificity of the WS. Hence, co‐expression of acyl‐ACP thioesterases with Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus WS and Marinobacter aquaeolei FAR resulted in the production of WEs with reduced chain lengths, whereas the co‐expression of the same acyl‐ACP thioesterases in combination with Mus musculus WS and M. aquaeolei FAR had little impact on the overall final wax composition. This was despite substantial remodelling of the acyl‐CoA pool, suggesting that these substrates were not efficiently incorporated into WEs. These results indicate that modification of the substrate pool requires careful selection of the WS and FAR activities for the successful high accumulation of these novel wax ester species in Camelina seeds.  相似文献

Parkinson''s disease‐related proteins, PINK1 and Parkin, act in a common pathway to maintain mitochondrial quality control. While the PINK1‐Parkin pathway can promote autophagic mitochondrial turnover (mitophagy) following mitochondrial toxification in cell culture, alternative quality control pathways are suggested. To analyse the mechanisms by which the PINK1–Parkin pathway operates in vivo, we developed methods to detect Ser65‐phosphorylated ubiquitin (pS65‐Ub) in Drosophila. Exposure to the oxidant paraquat led to robust, Pink1‐dependent pS65‐Ub production, while pS65‐Ub accumulates in unstimulated parkin‐null flies, consistent with blocked degradation. Additionally, we show that pS65‐Ub specifically accumulates on disrupted mitochondria in vivo. Depletion of the core autophagy proteins Atg1, Atg5 and Atg8a did not cause pS65‐Ub accumulation to the same extent as loss of parkin, and overexpression of parkin promoted turnover of both basal and paraquat‐induced pS65‐Ub in an Atg5‐null background. Thus, we have established that pS65‐Ub immunodetection can be used to analyse Pink1‐Parkin function in vivo as an alternative to reporter constructs. Moreover, our findings suggest that the Pink1‐Parkin pathway can promote mitochondrial turnover independently of canonical autophagy in vivo.  相似文献

Metaphors are cognitive instruments with the capacity to influence how humans think about the world. Guiding our representations and shaping our experiences, metaphor is of anthropological interest because it is an integral aspect of culture. This paper aims to highlight the role of metaphor in the biotechnology industry. In particular, animal metaphors provide a means of consolidating information. In a culture where time is highly restricted, metaphors enable the speedy transmission of knowledge, placing information in a familiar context or cultural model. Ethnographic findings reveal that animal metaphors contribute to a larger conceptual framework that equates biological evolution with commercial relationships. Depending on the context, metaphors both conceal and reveal different aspects of the financial world, affecting interpretations of the market.  相似文献
