Analysis of charcoal from an archaeological assemblage near the Lukula community located at the southernmost boundary of the Mayombe forest (Bas-Congo, DRC) yielded 30 taxa used as firewood between 1,200 and 700 cal. b.p. Local people mentioned 71 taxa preferred for use nowadays. The identified taxa belong either to mature rainforest, pioneer forest, regenerating forest or woodland savanna, indicating that ancient and current local populations gathered firewood in several different forest types. Modern firewood preferences do not seem to agree with the archaeobotanical composition. Also, linguistic evidence does not indicate a long exploitation history for all of the recorded taxa. Furthermore, no particular wood qualities such as wood density, calorific value or magical or medicinal properties seem to determine the Lukula assemblage, which was probably composed of waste material from various activities which required different specific firewood characteristics. As such, taxa composition is not biased by human selection, suggesting that it reflects the surrounding environment, which was characterised by mature rainforest with patches of regenerating forest and open vegetation types. Unlike the origin of present-day forest-savanna mosaics from human activity, fragmentation around 1,000 cal. b.p. may have been provoked by a well-known climatic event coinciding with the Medieval Climate Anomaly, which undoubtedly had a significant impact on Central African forest composition.  相似文献

Sampling for mysid shrimps in shallow coastal waters of Mozambique provided new distribution records for Siriella brevicaudata Paulson, 1875, Gastrosaccus bispinosa Wooldridge, 1978, Gastrosaccus longifissura Wooldridge, 1978, Dioptromysis proxima Nouvel, 1964 and Anisomysis maris rubri Bãcescu, 1973. Rhopalophthalmus tropicalis sp. nov. and Gastrosaccus mozambicus sp. nov. are described for the first time. The former species is distinguished from its closest relative R. terranatalis O. Tattersall, 1957 by its much smaller size, the lack of serrations on the lateral spines of the telson, the structure and arrangement of the spines on the antennal sympod and the number of subdivisions of the propodus of the thoracic endopod. Adult males of G. mozambicus sp. nov. show affinity to G. bispinosa, but the two species are separated by the form of the two distal exopod segments on the 3rd pleopod.  相似文献

Free-living nematodes from littoral benthic sediments of four lakes, two rivers and a hot spring in Ethiopia are studied. Populations of nematodes encountered are identified to the species level. The general nematode (generic and species) composition of the lakes, rivers and hot spring are appraised by giving special emphasis to the nematodes from L. Tana, i.e. three sites where different environmental factors come into play were considered. Gelda is a site close to a river inlet (River Gelda), Gedero is a site exposed to strong wind action while Zegie is a secluded site protected by a land mass from any strong wind action. Nematode communities were identified using classification and ordination techniques. The identified communities are then characterised with respect to species composition, biomass, density, diversity, size structure, feeding type and maturity index. Also, the vertical distribution of nematodes is examined at the community and species level. An attempt has been made to associate these variations with the considered environmental factors viz. site, water depth, sediment depth, median grain size and percentage of mud in the sediment.  相似文献

Within a timespan of a few decadesm the harbour seal almost completely disappeared from the estuaries in the south-west of the Netherlands. In 1960 a population of around 350 animals still lived in the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde area. About a quarter of this population lived in the Oosterschelde. At present less than 17 animals can be regularly observed in the whole area. Human influences are responsible for the rapid decline of the population. Initially a high hunting pressure and later environmental pollution are the main causes. Loss of habitat and disturbance at the resting places are additional important factors. The Oosterschelde still is a suitable habitat for seals. A short term natural development of a viable population in the area is not to be expected. Only with human help through active management, i.e. reintroduction of rehabilitated seals (preferably originating from that area) and strict conservation of the extant Oosterschelde seal population, accompanied by environmental sanitation of the neighbouring waters, can the current southern Dutch harbour seal population increase.  相似文献

Using the chromium release assay and the single cell assay in agarose, we study the cytotoxic reaction of the MHC-restricted T lymphocyte clones P89:15 and P1:3, which recognize distinct but specific tumour antigens on the surface of syngeneic P815 mastocytoma cells. We propose a mathematical model which describes these experiments, accounts for the strongly non-Michaelian behaviour of the reaction and permits us to estimate the kinetic parameters characterizing effector-target conjugation and lethal hit delivery. The results show that the binding and lytic activity of effector cells is modulated by the number of targets bound to them. The binding of a second target by an effector having already a target bound is facilitated; on the other hand, an effector having bound two targets delivers a lethal hit more slowly than one with a single target bound. We investigate the role of these kinetic properties in the competition between the process of tumour progression due to cancer cell replication and the process of tumour regression due to T lymphocyte cytotoxic activity. For both clones, we estimate the effector-target ratio beyond which rejection prevails. This ratio is nine times larger for P1:3 than for P89:15. Furthermore, our analysis suggests that there exists an optimal specificity minimizing this ratio. Deviations from this optimum, be it in the sense of an increase or decrease of specificity, tendsto stabilize the tumoural state: a situation which in the broader context of the immune response evolution and regulation can be viewed as animmune response dilemma.  相似文献
