More than 50% of Nepal’s population lives in the hill regions, usually with small land holdings, and over 60% are considered below the poverty line. Livestock, and particularly goats, provide these small-scale farmers with about 55% of their on-farm income. We studied goat production in Katteldanda, a mid-hill village of 78 households, mainly Brahmins, in Ghorka District. Subsistence farmers raise six or seven goats and one or two buffalo, and cultivate mainly maize, millet and rice. Tree fodder constituted about 70% of dry matter intake of goats for large parts of the year and was collected by lopping branches from trees on upland, rain-watered, private terraces (bari) near the household compound. Local farmers ranked the fodder trees they considered best and we measured the actual fodder they offered to goats. In addition, we evaluated and ranked 23 fodder species on the basis of laboratory in vitro nutritional and metabolizable energy yields. Using a Mantel test, a significant correlation was found between what the farmers thought was best fodder and fodder offered to goats (Mantel r = 0.398; P = 0.037) but non-significant correlations were found between either what the farmers thought was best fodder or fodder offered to goats and laboratory rankings (Mantel r = −0.027; P = 0.49 and Mantel r = 0.187; P = 0.18, respectively). We concluded that biomass produced and availability throughout the year, in addition to nutritional and energy yield, are important criteria for selecting fodder trees for goat production.  相似文献

In Nepal, live donor organ transplantation is only 14 years old with the first successful kidney transplant made in 2008 and a successful liver and bone marrow transplant made in 2016. However, transplantation of cadaveric cornea dates back to 1998. There are still no cases of animal-to-human organ transplantation in Nepal. There are stringent laws to regulate human body organ transplantation in Nepal which are amended from time to time. However, there is a racket of human traffickers who lure rural people from this low-income country into the illegal organ trade. Furthermore, there is a substantial lack of awareness of organ donation among the general public. This article focuses on the stipulations of ethical, legal, and practical issues of obtaining organs procured from living and brain-dead donors that support the process of transplantation in Nepal. In addition, the article also explores the legal and practical issues of organ trafficking and organ donation awareness in Nepal on the basis of factual data and findings from other studies.  相似文献

The endogenous substance(s) involved in the regulation of food intake has been isolated from serum, urine and feces. In the present study, a similar type of anorexigenic proteoglycan was isolated from human rat erythrocyte membranes and rat liver membranes. Membranes were suspended in 2.0% deoxycholate and allowed to stand at 25 degrees C for 30 min. The suspension was treated with 5% TCA, supernatant was collected, dialyzed and concentrated. TCA-soluble proteins were fractionated on Sephadex G-150. The active second peak fractions were further purified on DEAE-Sephadex A-25. Biologically active substance reduced the appetite in rats significantly when given intraperitoneally. The proteoglycan (50 kDa) consisted of 70-85% carbohydrate. Similar properties of plasma and membrane anorectic substance further indicated its membrane origin. We believe that this anorectic proteoglycan is anchored to cell membranes and released into the blood circulation to regulate the food intake.  相似文献

In rats injected intraperitoneally with actinomycin D (2 mg/kg body weight) 12 h earlier, the yield of the 30S ribonucleoprotein particles isolated from liver nuclei by extraction with 0.1 M NaCl at pH 8.0 decreased by 60 per cent. The protein-to-RNA ratio of these particles increased to 32:1 from the ratio 4.4:1 found in the same particles isolated from the nuclei of liver of control rats. The particles isolated from the liver nuclei of rats injected with actinomycin D were depleted of all charge isomers of the two most prominent polypeptides (33,000 and 39,000 daltons) present in the particles of liver of control animals. The most abundant protein in these particles was a 43,000 dalton polypeptide. This polypeptide is the least prominent of the 3 major polypeptides present in the control particles. The same charge isomers of the 43,000 dalton polypeptide were present in the nuclear ribonucleoprotein particles isolated from the liver of control animals and from the liver of animals treated with actinomycin D 12 h earlier. In control animals the nuclear ribonucleoprotein monoparticles isolated from kidney contained 3 major polypeptides of the same molecular weight with the same distribution of their charge isomers as were present in the particles isolated from liver nuclei. The injection of actinomycin D 12 h earlier was without any effect on the protein composition of the 30S nuclear ribonucleoprotein particles of rat kidney.  相似文献

This article is concerned with factors contributing to agro-biodiversityloss in Nepal. The aim of this paper is to analyse the causes ofagro-biodiversity loss and draw out some concrete recommendations. The fieldstudy was conducted in six districts of Nepal using qualitative researchmethods. These methods were focused group discussion, key informant interview,informal discussion, semi-structured interview and transact. The paper concludesthat commercialisation of agriculture, the weak policy and regulatory framework,increased accessibility, changes in cropping patterns and land use practices,social inequality, population growth and technological advancement are greatlycontributing to agro-biodiversity loss in Nepal. Existing Nepaleseagro-biodiversity is in serious threat if appropriate actions are not taken intime.  相似文献
