To improve our mechanistic understanding and predictive capacities with respect to climate change effects on the spring phytoplankton bloom in temperate marine systems, we used a process‐driven dynamical model to disentangle the impact of potentially relevant factors which are often correlated in the field. The model was based on comprehensive indoor mesocosm experiments run at four temperature and three light regimes. It was driven by time‐series of water temperature and irradiance, considered edible and less edible phytoplankton separately, and accounted for density‐dependent grazing losses. It successfully reproduced the observed dynamics of well edible phytoplankton in the different temperature and light treatments. Four major factors influenced spring phytoplankton dynamics: temperature, light (cloudiness), grazing, and the success of overwintering phyto‐ and zooplankton providing the starting biomasses for spring growth. Our study predicts that increasing cloudiness as anticipated for warmer winters for the Baltic Sea region will retard phytoplankton net growth and reduce peak heights. Light had a strong direct effect in contrast to temperature. However, edible phytoplankton was indirectly strongly temperature‐sensitive via grazing which was already important in early spring at moderately high algal biomasses and counter‐intuitively provoked lower and later algal peaks at higher temperatures. Initial phyto‐ and zooplankton composition and biomass also had a strong effect on spring algal dynamics indicating a memory effect via the broadly under‐sampled overwintering plankton community. Unexpectedly, increased initial phytoplankton biomass did not necessarily lead to earlier or higher spring blooms since the effect was counteracted by subsequently enhanced grazing. Increasing temperature will likely exhibit complex indirect effects via changes in overwintering phytoplankton and grazer biomasses and current grazing pressure. Additionally, effects on the phytoplankton composition due to the species‐specific susceptibility to grazing are expected. Hence, we need to consider not only direct but also indirect effects, e.g. biotic interactions, when addressing climate change impacts.  相似文献

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to identify the origin of vertebrate blood in the guts of 29 245 wild-caught flies of eleven Glossina species from various ecological zones of Africa. Depending on the quality of the bloodmeal samples, 62.8% of the samples were identified and could be assigned to a host-group (e.g. ruminant), family (e.g. Bovidae) or species (e.g. Bos spp.). A total of 13 145 samples (44.9%) was identifiable up to the species level. With a few exceptions, the present results are in agreement with earlier published reports. Glossina austeni and G. fuscipleuris seemed to have a distinct feeding preference for Suidae (mainly bushpig). Glossina morsitans ssp. fed mainly on Suidae (mainly warthog), although local variations were observed and in some areas hippopotamus or ruminants replaced the warthog as the main host. Bushbuck seemed to be the principal food source for G. longipalpis and G. fusca . Glossina pallidipes fed mainly on ruminants (buffalo, bushbuck and cattle) but, depending on host availability and location, Suidae were also important hosts. Hippopotamus was identified as the main source of blood-meals for G. brevipalpis . The main hosts for G. longipennis were Suidae (mainly bushpig) and not rhinoceros as had been reported 40 years earlier. The opportunistic feeding behaviour of the palpalis tsetse group was confirmed. The results showed that changes in environment, fauna and host availability may result in modification of tsetse feeding patterns.  相似文献

The Signature Series Symposium “Cellular Therapies for Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Disease Proven and Unproven Therapies—Promise, Facts and Fantasy” was held as a pre-meeting of the 26th International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) annual congress in Montreal, Canada, May 2, 2018. This was the first ISCT program that was entirely dedicated to the advancement of cell-based therapies for musculoskeletal diseases. Cellular therapies in musculoskeletal medicine are a source of great promise and opportunity. They are also the source of public controversy, confusion and misinformation. Patients, clinicians, scientists, industry and government share a commitment to clear communication and responsible development of the field. Therefore, this symposium convened thought leaders from around the world in a forum designed to catalyze communication and collaboration to bring the greatest possible innovation and value to patients with musculoskeletal conditions.  相似文献

  • 2 Das Kontaktverhalten muß während einer kritischen Phase (bei T. nilotica unter den angegebenen Versuchsbedingungen bis ungefähr zum 21. Tag nach dem Ablaichen) aktiviert werden, wenn es längere Zeit andauern soll (= Reaktionsphase). Die Reaktionsphase kann bei T. nilotica mehrere Wochen dauern. In ihr nimmt die Reaktionsstärke (Anzahl und Dauer der Kontakte) zunächst rasch zu, erreicht ein Maximum und nimmt dann allmählich wieder ab. Anstieg, Maximum und Abnahme sind an bestimmte Entwicklungsabschnitte gebunden, weitgehend unabhängig davon, ob die Tiere zuvor schon Kontaktverhalten geäußert haben oder nicht. Die Kontaktreaktionen unterscheiden sich u. a. durch die Dauer der Kontakte: tholloni = 0,7 Sek., nilotica = 86,5 Sek., heudeloti m. = 1,5 Sek. je Tag und Tier (Maximalwerte bei bestimmten, für alle Arten gleichen Versuchsbedingungen).
  • 3 Von der Aufzuchttemperatur hängt es ab, in welchem Entwicklungsabschnitt die Reaktionsphase liegt. Das Reaktionsmaximum junger T. nilotica lag bei 24° C am 9., bei 29° C am Tag nach der Eiablage.
  • 4 Geblendete nilotica-Jungfische zeigten nur zu Beginn der Reaktionsphase schwaches Kontaktverhalten, normale Tiere äußerten gegenüber einer durchsichtigen Glasattrappe abgeschwächtes, nur kurze Zeit dauerndes Kontaktverhalten. Das Kontaktverhalten wird durch mechanische (Strömung) und optische Reize ausgelöter und gesteuert.
  • 5 Junge Maulbrüter aus kleinen Eiern erreichten eine längere Kontaktdauer als solche aus größeren. Nach künstlicher Reduktion der Dottermenge um 10–20%) erhöhte sich die Kontaktdauer bei jungen nilotica um 23,1%, die Zahl der Kontakte nahm gleichzeitig um 7,6% ab. Die ♀♀ der substratbrütenden T. mariae legen große Eier, die Jungen zeigten gegenüber Attrappen intensive Kontaktreaktionen. Es wird die Frage diskutiert, ob das Erreichen einer bestimmten Eigröße eine Voraussetzung für das Entstehen des Kontaktverhaltens gewesen sein könnte.
  • 6 Die Kurzkontakte junger T. tholloni werden aus ihrer Orientierungsreaktion abgeleitet und als Vorstufe des Kontaktverhaltens gedeutet.
  • 7 7. Mehrere Tilapia-Arten wurden künstlich gekreuzt. Bei Verwendung von tholloni-Sperma wiesen die Bastarde eine erhöhte Sterblichkeit auf. Aus der Kreuzung T. tholloni ♀ ~ T. nilotica ♂ (Substratbrüter ~ weiblicher Maulbrüter) gingen nur ♀♀ hervor. Die Kreuzung T. heudeloti macrocephala ~ T. nilotica (männlicher ~ weiblicher Maulbrüter) erbrachte fertile F1- und F2-Generationen sowie alle vier möglichen Rückkreuzungen. Bei der Vererbung des Kontaktverhaltens (gemessen an der Dauer der Kontakte) scheinen relativ wenig Erbfaktoren mitzuwirken, T. heudeloti m. erwies sich gegenüber nilotica als praevalent. Ein Teil der Bastarde aus der Kreuzung T. tholloni ♀ ~ T. nilotica ♂ (F1) (Substratbrüter ~ weiblicher Maulbrüter) lag auf der Merkmalsskala zwischen den Ausgangsarten, der Rest verteilte sich sowohl auf den Bereich von tholloni als auch auf den Bereich von nilotica.

Female mating preferences were examined in three members of an evolutionarily young Cyprinodon lineage from Laguna Chichancanab, Yucatan, Mexico. In separate experiments, females of C. beltrani and C. labiosus , and C. beltrani and C. maya were simultaneously presented with conspecific and heterospecific males and given the opportunity to spawn with either or both. These three species showed different degrees of conspecific mate recognition: complete for C. maya , intermediate for C. labiosus , and indiscriminate for C. beltrani. We conclude that only C. maya is reproductively isolated and that C. beltrani and C. labiosus still hybridize in nature. Whereas between C. beltrani and C. maya mate choice is symmetric, it is asymmetric between C. beltrani and C labiosus. The results of the mating trials are consistent with mitochondrial DNA data which indicate that C. maya is genetically the most distinct species in the flock. They are also supported by experiments on visually and chemically mediated mate preferences.  相似文献

In two surveys (600 consumers) (1) the importance of color on a consumer's decision to buy strawberry nectar and jam, (2) the consumer's color acceptance of strawberry nectars from puree and adequate products containing colorants from the market as well as specially prepared samples and (3) the associated attributes to these samples were studied. In addition, a test was carried out in order to (4) characterize strawberry color and its changes during storage sufficiently with one value.
Color has a big impact on a consumer's decision to buy strawberry nectars as well as strawberry jam. Neither gender nor age or consumption habits of consumers had a significant impact on color acceptance. For color assessment, an "acceptance factor" (AF) was calculated from colorimetric data that provides processors the prediction of color quality of nectars from puree. Nectars with an AF lower than 0.4 were not accepted, whereas nectars with an AF higher than about 0.7 were described as excellent.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS


The results of this study show the first time that it is possible to characterize the color of strawberry products by means of the calculation of an "acceptance factor" (AF =  a */h), and to predict whether the color will be accepted from the consumers or not (excellent [AF > 0.7], acceptable [AF > 0.4] or not acceptable [AF < 0.4]). This data could be used as basis for the production of new strawberry nectars (containing colorants) and the assessment for the stability and shelf life of strawberry products from puree.  相似文献

External and internal head structures of larvae of Nevrorthidae were described in detail. The results were compared to conditions found in other representatives of Neuroptera and the other two neuropterid orders. The cladistic analysis supported the monophyly of Neuroptera, Neuroptera exclusive of Nevrorthidae, Hemerobiiformia, and Myrmeleontiformia. Neuroptera exclusive of Nevrorthidae are supported by the formation of an undivided postmentum and the presence of cryptonephric Malpighian tubules. The highly specialized articulation of the neck (Rollengelenk) and the absence of a salivary duct are autapomorphies of Nevrorthidae. Ithonidae and Polystoechotidae form a clade and are the sister group of the remaining Hemerobiiformia, which are characterized by the complete lack of a gula and a terminal filament of the antenna. Within this lineage, a clade comprising Mantispidae, Dilaridae, Berothidae, and Rhachiberothidae is well supported. Larvae of Myrmeleontiformia are characterized by a complex transformation of head structures, with a hypostomal bridge, a small triangular gula, largely reduced maxillary grooves, and anteriorly shifted posterior tentorial grooves. The slender finger‐like mid‐dorsal apodeme is another autapomorphy of the group. Psychopsidae are placed as the sister group of the remaining Myrmeleontiformia, which are characterized by a conspicuous, protruding ocular region (often less distinct or even absent in Nemopteridae). Ascalaphidae are the sister group of Myrmeleontidae. Larvae of both families share the fusion of the tibia and tarsus in the hind leg. The larval characters analysed were not sufficient for full resolution of the myrmeleontiform and hemerobiiform lineages. The position of several families such as Osmylidae, Sisyridae, and Coniopterygidae remains uncertain. More than 20 populations of the cave-dwelling characid Astyanax occur within a restricted karst area in Mexico. The fish possess reduced eyes without lenses and visual cells. It is still an open question as to whether this condition evolved convergently after multiple entries of the surface ancestor into the different caves or whether a single cave ancestor, already characterized by reduced eyes, spread secondarily within them. In the crosses between specific populations, specimens appear that deviate considerably from those of the parents. They possess larger and better-developed eyes with histologically intact lenses and visual cells; they thus have the structural potential for vision. This indicates that in different cave populations, different mutations in the eye gene system have occurred. In cases where these non-functional rudimentary genes are recombined in hybrid specimens, gene expression may be restored.
