Evidence for reduced sensitivity of tree growth to temperature has been reported from multiple forests along the high northern latitudes. This alleged circumpolar phenomenon described the apparent inability of temperature-sensitive tree-ring width and density chronologies to parallel increasing instrumental temperature measurements since the mid-20th century. In addition to such low-frequency trend offset, the inability of formerly temperature-sensitive tree growth to reflect high-frequency temperature signals in a warming world is indicated at some boreal sites, mainly in Alaska, the Yukon and Siberia. Here, we refer to both of these findings as the ‘divergence problem’ (DP), with their causes and scale being debated. If DP is widespread and the result of climatic forcing, the overall reliability of tree-ring-based temperature reconstructions should be questioned. Testing for DP benefits from well-replicated tree-ring and instrumental data spanning from the 19th to the 21st century. Here, we present a network of 124 larch and spruce sites across the European Alpine arc. Tree-ring width chronologies from 40 larch and 24 spruce sites were selected based on their correlation with early (1864–1933) instrumental temperatures to assess their ability of tracking recent (1934–2003) temperature variations. After the tree-ring series of both species were detrended in a manner that allows low-frequency variations to be preserved and scaled against summer temperatures, no unusual late 20th century DP is found. Independent tree-ring width and density evidence for unprecedented late 20th century temperatures with respect to the past millennium further reinforces our results. 相似文献

Phylogeny of Chaetonotidae and other Paucitubulatina (Gastrotricha: Chaetonotida) and the colonization of aquatic ecosystems. —Zoologica Scripta, 42, 88–105. Chaetonotidae is the largest family within Gastrotricha with almost 400 nominal species represented in both freshwater and marine habitats. The group is probably non‐monophyletic and suffers from a troubled taxonomy. Current classification is to a great extent based on shape and distribution of cuticular structures, characters that are highly variable. We present the most densely sampled molecular study so far where 17 of the 31 genera belonging to Chaetonotida are represented. Bayesian and maximum likelihood approaches based on 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA and COI mtDNA are used to reconstruct relationships within Chaetonotidae. The use of cuticular structures for supra‐specific classification within the group is evaluated and the question of dispersal between marine and freshwater habitats is addressed. Moreover, the subgeneric classification of Chaetonotus is tested in a phylogenetic context. Our results show high support for a clade containing Dasydytidae nested within Chaetonotidae. Within this clade, only three genera are monophyletic following current classification. Genera containing both marine and freshwater species never form monophyletic clades and group with other species according to habitat. Marine members of Aspidiophorus appear to be the sister group of all other Chaetonotidae and Dasydytidae, indicating a marine origin of the clade. Halichaetonotus and marine Heterolepidoderma form a monophyletic group in a sister group relationship to freshwater species, pointing towards a secondary invasion of marine environments of these taxa. We made intensive observations of 50 pairs of Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor in southern Sweden from 1989 to 1992. Between 7% and 22% of the pairs each year defended a territory but laid no eggs. Overall, 76% of the pairs laying eggs raised fledglings, but this proportion was only 33% in 1991 when the weather was cold and wet. The mean clutch size (5.9) and brood size (4.5) in successful nests did not vary significantly between years. Incubation time was 1 day longer in 1991 (11–12 days) than in 1990 and 1992 (10–11 days). Number of young fledged per nesting attempt (3.5) and per pair (2.7) in the population also varied significantly between years. The initiation of egg laying varied between years but coincided each year remarkably well with the date when oak came into leaf. Breeding success is discussed, and comparisons are made with other hole-nesting species. 相似文献

The breeding of Tengmalm's Owl Aegolius funereus was studied at Umeå, Sweden, during the 1984–85. Mean clutch-size was one egg larger in 1984 than in 1985 despite the later laying in 1984. The difference in clutch-size was related to a better food supply in 1984. Daily weight increase of females during the prelaying period showed a high negative correlation with laying date in 1985, and a high positive correlation with clutch-size independently of laying date in 1984–85. This suggested that food eaten before and during laying had a great and direct influence on both laying date and clutch-size. Many females increased in weight during laying and most others decreased only moderately (relative to egg weight), suggesting that body reserves were not a main source for egg production.
Late breeding females were provided with extra food during the prelaying and laying periods in 1985. Fed females weighed more, bred eight days earlier and laid one more egg than controls. At the same laying dates in mid season, and after heavy snow-fall, clutch-size and female weight were larger in the fed birds than in controls, but this was not so near the end of the laying season. Although the earliest of the fed late breeders weighed more, and probably were less restricted by food availability just before or during laying, they did not lay more eggs than did early breeders. This result suggested some limitation on clutch-size that could not be overcome by the supplementary feeding. Weights of females during laying did not show any consistent relationship with clutch-size during successive laying date intervals, suggesting that clutch-size was not directly related to body condition. 相似文献

We examined the relationship between breeding success and juvenile sex ratio in two gamebirds with differing degrees of sexual size dimorphism. We used breeding success as an indicator of the level of environmental stress the birds had experienced. Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus and Black Grouse T. tetrix wing samples were collected from hunters in northern Sweden during 1977-86. In both species, annual juvenile sex ratio (percentage of males) increased with annual breeding success, i.e. with reduced environmental stress. We attribute this to the higher energy requirements during growth, vulnerability to environmental stress, and mortality of juvenile males compared with females, especially under adverse conditions. Moreover, the relationship between breeding success and juvenile sex ratio was stronger in Capercaillie than in Black Grouse. This reflects the higher degree of sexual size dimorphism in Capercaillie, and consequent larger mortality difference between juvenile males and females. 相似文献

Uptake, translocation and complex formation of 14C-labelled 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid (picloram) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in seedlings of rape (Brassica napus L. cv. Nilla) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. var. uniflorus) were studied. Sunflower is susceptible both to 2,4-D and picloram, while rape is susceptible to 2,4-D but more tolerant to picloram. The uptake of the herbicides through the leaves was almost complete in both species. Translocation of 2,4-D into the roots took place more readily than that of picloram. In sunflower about 50 per cent of the applied 2,4-D was extruded through the roots into the nutrient solution after 9 days. In the picloram-treated sunflower most of the activity was found in the aerial parts, while in picloram-treated rape most of the activity still occurred in the treated leaf after 9 days. No activity at all was found in the roots or in the nutrient solution of the picloram-treated rape seedlings. While the major part of 2,4-D always was found in the state of free herbicide, a large fraction of picloram was rapidly bound into water-soluble complexes. This binding was especially pronounced in rape. Separation by paper chromatography showed that different radioactive compounds were formed. Most of these could be hydrolyzed, thereby releasing free herbicide. The results support the hypotheses that complex formation could counteract herbicide translocation and toxicity of auxin herbicides. 相似文献

Summary The only positive synapomorphy uniting members of the platyhelminth turbellarian taxon, Prolecithophora, is a peculiar membranous system present in much of the shaft of the sperm. This investigation followed the development of this membrane system during spermiogenesis in Cylindrostoma fingalianum and its appearance in the mature sperm. Formation begins with invaginations of the early spermatid shaft outer cell membrane. The invaginations enlarge and the membrane becomes increasingly folded. They appear to be subsequently supplemented with membranous material supplied by an extensive vacuolar system originating from the Golgi apparatus in the main cytoplasmic mass of the spermatid. Throughout development, and in mature sperm, the membranous system forms a part of the outer cell membrane and is also intimately associated with the elongate mitochondrion that lies between the membranous column and the nucleus. The nucleus is highly lobed and the sperm cell lacks flagella or axonemes or the dense bodies found in most other turbellarian taxonomic divisions. A kinetoplastid protozoon present in considerable numbers amongst allosperm is also described. 相似文献
