A fractional step numerical method is developed for the nonlinear partial differential equations arising in chemotaxis models,
which include density-dependent diffusion terms for chemotaxis, as well as reaction and Fickian diffusion terms. We take the
novel approach of viewing the chemotaxis term as an advection term which is possible in the context of fractional steps. This
method is applied to pattern formation problems in bacterial growth and shown to give good results. High-resolution methods
capable of capturing steep gradients (from CLAWPACK) are used for the advection step, while the A-stable and L-stable TR-BDF2 method is used for the diffusion step. A numerical
instability that is seen with other diffusion methods is analyzed and eliminated.

Nasofrontal dermoid sinus tracts that extend intracranially through the foramen cecum or ethmoid can be difficult to completely resect. Complete extirpation of nasofrontal dermoid sinus cysts is essential for effective treatment of this problem to minimize the chance of recurrence. The authors describe a new technique based on parasagittal osteotomies through the supraorbital bar, or bandeau, that ensures that the resection of the nasofrontal dermoid sinus cysts is complete. This technique also limits the size of the external nasal incision and enhances the surgeon's exposure of the anterior cranial base for resection of intradural extension. Treatment of immature rats with 5 iu equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) on day 25 typically stimulates a preovulatory surge of LH on day 27 and ovulation on day 28. In rats weighing > 60 g at the time of treatment, an LH surge and ovulation occurred in 75% of the animals but, in rats weighing < 60 g, only 13% ovulated even though 69% showed an LH surge. Previous findings have shown that exogenous LH can stimulate ovulation in the rats < 60 g, indicating that the anovulation was not due to ovarian immaturity, but rather to an abnormal form of LH. Thus, it was important to determine whether the bioactivity of LH released at the time of the surge differs in rats < 60 g compared with rats > 60 g. Experiments showed that LH from both groups of eCG-treated animals were equipotent in stimulating testosterone production from incubated Leydig cells and progesterone production from cultured granulosa cells. Similarly the surge of progesterone in vivo, which occurs co-incident with the LH surge, was of similar magnitude in both groups of animals. Since prostaglandin synthesis increases at the time of ovulation and is also stimulated by LH, it was investigated whether the activity of ovarian phospholipase A2, the rate limiting enzyme in prostaglandin synthesis, and ovarian prostaglandin E2 concentrations differed in the animals > 60 g and < 60 g. Phospholipase A2 activities were similar in both groups of animals at the time of the LH surge, as were the prostaglandin E2 concentrations. However, in all animals that ovulated (15/20 in rats > 60 g and 2/15 in rats < 60 g), there was a threefold increase in ovarian prostaglandin E2 concentrations. The results show that, in underweight animals, the bioactivity of LH, in terms of its ability to stimulate steroidogenesis and phospholipase A2 activity, is similar to that released by animals > 60 g; however, the LH produced by the underweight animals fails to induce ovulation by failing to increase, either directly or indirectly, prostaglandin E2 production. Comparison of the profiles of plasma LH collected at the time of the LH surge on an anionic ion exchange column indicates that the LH from rats < 60 g possesses significantly less of the neutral or basic glycoform of LH than that from rats > 60 g. This finding provides a further index that the biopotency of LH produced by underweight animals is different from that of rats > 60 g. 相似文献

A C4 cDNA clone has been used to localize the C4 genes within the human major histocompatibility complex (MHC). The clone, pC4AL1, detects a DNA polymorphism of the C4 genes in Southern blot hybridization experiments and established the genotype of a lymphoblastoid cell line, LCL 721, as heterozygous for the C4 DNA patterns. Subclones of LCL 721 that had gamma-ray-induced lesions of the MHC were analyzed with pC4AL1. Loss or retention of chromosome-specific C4 DNA patterns relative to the loss or retention of other MHC genes on the same chromosome was assessed. This permitted the mapping of the C4 genes, and the other MHC-linked complement genes, between the HLA-DR and HLA-B loci. 相似文献

Synopsis
Danionella translucida, a new genus and species of danioin cyprinid fishes, is described from Burma. Females are mature at 10–11 mm standard length, and the largest known specimen is only 12 mm. Ripe eggs are few in number and relatively large, 0.4–0.6 mm in diameter. Adults are scaleless and largely transparent, with a complex pattern of large melanophores on the ventral surface of the abdomen. Specializations observed in skeletal preparations include the danioin notch in the medial surface of the mandibles; a large maxillo-mandibulary cartilage; a cartilage (epibranchial 5?) uniting the branchial arches 4 and 5; pharyngeal bones with a single row of 4 tricuspid teeth; and pectoral, pelvic, and caudal fins with fewer rays than reported or observed in any other members of the family Cyprinidae. 相似文献

A conventional colorimetric peroxidase end-point (ortho-phenylenediamine substrate), used in an enzyme immunoassay for carcinoembryonic antigen, employing plastic beads as solid support, has been replaced by a much faster (30 seconds versus 30 minutes) enhanced chemiluminescent assay for the peroxidase label. Para-iodophenol was used to enhance the light emission from the peroxidase catalysed chemiluminescent reaction between luminol and hydrogen peroxide. Normal and pollination-induced senescence of Petunia hybrida L cv. Pink Cascade flowers is accompanied by an increase in the sensitivity of the corolla to ethylene as indicated by an acceleration in the rate of corolla bluing after exposure to exogenous ethylene. Pollination resulted in the production of short-chain saturated fatty acids ranging in chain length from C6 to C10. Following pollination, these acids are synthesized in the stylar tissue via the acetate pathway within the first 12 hours. The fatty acids are transported rapidly to the corolla where they induce an increase in ethylene sensitivity. In unpollinated flowers, these acids are produced in the corolla during the early stages of senescence. Although the levels of these fatty acids decrease rapidly during the final stages of senescence, a significant increase in ethylene sensitivity could be detected prior to the decrease. It appears that the increase in ethylene sensitivity caused by the synthesis of short-chain saturated fatty acids occurs concurrently, but independent from ethylene synthesis. 相似文献
