Aim Ecological factors that vary along spatial scales can greatly influence the outcome of evolution. However, often it is difficult for researchers to identify significant ecological variables that might be associated with the geographical distribution of phenotypes and genotypes in nature. In this paper, we use remote sensing image texture analyses to investigate breeding territories of the white‐throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis), a polymorphic passerine species that has been shown to segregate spatially according to morph. Our aim was to examine how an integrative measure of landscape feature, such as image texture, could be used to distinguish subtle differences in habitat use and, presumably, habitat selection. Location A population of white‐throated sparrows located 1.5 miles east of the Cranberry Lake Biological Station in the Adirondack Mountains of St Lawrence County, New York, was used in this study; the study site itself was approximately 1 km2. Methods We analysed 27 territories (16 white males; 11 tan males) to determine if image texture can be used to distinguish differences in vegetation and structure in territories of the two colour morphs. First (variance)‐ and second (homogeneity)‐order image texture measurements with three different window sizes were derived using the green, red, and near infrared bands of Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data. Texture was then placed into t‐tests to determine statistical differences between the territories of the two male morphs. Results Significant differences between the territories of the two morphs were found in both variance and homogeneity texture measures in the red and green ASTER bands in all three window sizes. There were no differences with any near infrared texture measures. Main conclusions Examination of first‐ and second‐order statistical measures indicated that the territories of tan males have significantly more spectral variance than the territories of white males, while white males’ territories are significantly more homogeneous. These findings are consistent with the previous finding of the morphs settling in ‘high’ and ‘low’ neighbour density habitats that differ with respect to the amount of useable area on their borders. Previous study has also suggested that white and tan male territories differ according to overall landscape structure, not vegetation composition. Therefore, we suggest that red and green spectra may be more useful when examining differences in territory structure and possibly territory quality of similar edge‐type species. Our results suggest that image texture is a useful tool for ecological and evolutionary modelling of the distributions of phenotypes/genotypes across landscapes.  相似文献

Incubation prior to clutch completion may be adaptive if it maintains egg viability by inhibiting eggshell microbial growth, thus reducing the likelihood that the embryo becomes infected. To test this hypothesis, we examined the effect of partial incubation during egg laying on eggshell microbial loads in eastern bluebirds Sialia sialis breeding at a temperate‐zone site. We sampled eggshell microbes prior to and following four days of exposure to either partial incubation during the laying period or ambient environmental conditions without incubation (experimental eggs). Microbial colony counts declined significantly for eggs left in the nest during the laying period but did not vary significantly for eggs exposed to ambient conditions. Initial microbial loads were more similar to those previously reported from tropical than temperate environments, and microbes from potentially pathogenic groups were detected on 88% of first‐laid eggs on the day of laying. Egg viability was maintained when eggs were held indoors for four days without incubation but declined sharply thereafter. Our results suggest that partial incubation during egg laying may enhance egg viability in eastern bluebirds by reducing eggshell microbial loads; these effects appear stronger than those usually reported from the temperate zone.  相似文献

Abstract: Previous studies showed that in cultured chick ciliary ganglion neurons and CNS glia, adenosine can be synthesized by hydrolysis of 5'-AMP and that the accumulation of the adenosine degradative products inosine and hypoxanthine was significantly greater in glial than in neuronal cultures. Furthermore, previous immunochemical and histochemical studies in brain showed that adenosine deaminase and nucleoside phosphorylase are localized in endothelial and glial cells but are absent in neurons; however, adenosine deaminase may be found in a few neurons in discrete brain regions. These results suggested that adenosine degradative pathways may be more active in glia. Thus, we have determined if there is a differential distribution of adenosine deaminase, nucleoside phosphorylase, and xanthlne oxidase enzyme fluxes in glia, comparing primary cultures of central and ciliary ganglion neurons and glial cells from chick embryos. Hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase and production of adenosine by S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase activity were also examined. Our results show that there is a distinct profile of purine metabolizing enzymes for glia and neurons in culture. Both cell types have an S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase, but it was more active in neurons than in glia. In contrast, in glia the enzymatic activities of xanthine oxidase (443 ± 61 pmol/min/107 cells), nucleoside phosphorylase (187 ± B pmol/min/107 cells), and adenosine deaminase (233 ± 32 pmol/min/107 cells) were more active at least 100, 20, and five times, respectively, than in ciliary ganglion neurons and 100, 100, and nine times, respectively, than in central neurons.  相似文献

Glutathione (GSH) and more recently protein thiols (P-SH) have been found to play a major role in cellular radiation response. However, the effects of protein vicinal thiols, which are important for the functions of several major enzymes, on cellular responses to radiation have not been clearly delineated. Here we investigated the effects of depleting GSH and protein vicinal thiols (HS-P-SH) and P-SH on cell toxicity and radiation response. We used hydroxyethyldisulfide (HEDS, beta-mercaptoethanol-disulfide) alone and in combination with phenylarsine oxide (PAO) to alter P-SH, HS-P-SH and GSH. HEDS, a direct substrate for thioredoxin reductase and an indirect substrate for glutaredoxin (thioltransferase), did not alter protein vicinal thiols in cells. However, PAO, which specifically forms a covalent adduct with vicinal thiols, blocked bioreduction of HEDS; there was a concomitant and yet unexplained decrease in K1 cell GSH in the presence of HEDS and PAO. G6PD+ (K1) and G6PD- (E89) cells treated with L-buthionine sulfoximine (L-BSO) for 72 h to deplete GSH followed by PAO showed an increased cytotoxic response. However, the surviving E89 cells showed a 10,000-fold greater radiation lethality than the K1 cells. The effects of rapid depletion of GSH by a combination of L-BSO and dimethyfumarate (DMF), a glutathione-S-transferase substrate, were also investigated. Under these conditions, PAO radiosensitized the E89 cells more than 1000-fold over the K1 cells. The potential mechanisms for the altered response may be related to the inhibition of thioredoxin reductase and glutaredoxin. Both are key enzymes involved in DNA synthesis, protein homeostasis and cell survival. With GSH removed, vicinal thiols appear to play a critical role in determining cell survival and radiosensitivity. Decreasing P-SH and removing GSH and vicinal thiols is extremely toxic to K1 and E89 cells. We conclude that radiation sensitivity and cell survival are dependent on vicinal thiol and GSH. In the former and latter cases, the protein thiols are also important.  相似文献
