An annual organic matter budget for a 1700 m segment of Fort River (Massachusetts, USA) is presented. Primary production in this fourth order stream exceeds litter input annually, however ecosystem P/R is 0.5. Respiration in excess of gross primary production is supported by allochthonous organic matter imported from upstream reaches. The relative contribution of organic matter size fractions to stream consumers depends upon biologic lability, rate of input, and residence time in the ecosystem. Particles of seston size (1 μm to 1 mm) are most heavily used by consumers, however dissolved organic matter represents the largest input component. Microorganisms are the predominant consumers in this soft-water, nutrient-poor stream ecosystem. A conceptual model for assessing the processing efficiency of stream ecosystems is presented and discussed in terms of several headwater to estuary gradients.  相似文献

The distribution in the human uterus of the enzyme cyclooxygenase, involved in prostaglandin synthesis, was studied using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase immunohistochemical technique. Specific staining was observed only during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. It was found that cyclooxygenase was localised in the surface and glandular epithelium of the endometrium but could not be demonstrated in the endometrial stroma, myometrium or blood vessels. The location of specific staining for cyclooxygenase and its variation during the menstrual cycle was the same regardless of the amount of menstrual blood loss. Tissue samples obtained from early pregnant and post-menopausal patients failed to exhibit any specific staining.  相似文献

A series of 140 previously untreated patients with tonic-clonic or partial seizures were randomised to receive either phenytoin or sodium valproate. There was no difference between the treatment groups in pretreatment variables that might influence outcome. Sodium valproate and phenytoin in the treatment of tonic-clonic or partial seizures showed no difference in efficacy as regards time to two year remission or time to first seizure. When the possible prognostic factors were studied, including history and results of clinical examination and investigations before treatment; the only factor which influenced the proportion of patients achieving two year remission was type of seizure. Patients with a clinical history of partial seizures did significantly less well than those with a history of tonic-clonic seizures only. This study showed no major difference in efficacy between sodium valproate and phenytoin in adults with recent onset of epilepsy, irrespective of the type of seizures that the patient suffered.  相似文献

Summary The effects of restricted feeding schedules on the circadian rhythms of wheel-running of Dasyurus viverrinus were examined under a light/dark cycle and in constant darkness (experiment 1) and in constant light (experiment 2). The results of the 2 experiments showed that: (1) in contrast to the light/dark cycle, restricted feeding is only a weak zeitgeber for the wheel-running activity rhythms of D. viverrinus; (2) restricted feeding elicits meal anticipatory activity in D. viverrinus comparable to that elicited by restricted feeding in the rat; (3) transient cycles of the anticipatory activity free-run with a period different to that of the main component of activity for several cycles after the termination of restricted feeding; and (4) activity suggestive of beating between 2 oscillators occurs during restricted feeding and after the termination of restricted feeding. Taken together the latter 3 observations suggest that the activity rhythms of D. viverrinus are controlled by at least 2 separate circadian oscillators.  相似文献

1. A further investigation has been made of the way in which the fluorescent probes 1-anilino-naphthalene-8-sulphonate and 2-(N-methyl-anilino)naphthalene-6-sulphonate report on the energised state of bovine heart submitochondrial particles.2. A comparison of the probe responses to energisation with ATP or to a potassium diffusion potential has been made. The fluorescence enhancements seen in these two cases have different characteristics, and in view of this it is questioned whether a substrate generated energised state of a submitochondrial particle can be equated with a trans-membrane potassium diffusion potential.3. Substitution of ITP for ATP reduces the rate at which either of the probes respond to energisation. In contrast reducing the ATPase activity of the particles by treatment with the covalent ATPase inhibitors 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan or N,N′-dicyclohexyl-carbodiimide has no effect on this rate. This finding that the rate of the fluorescence changes is directly sensitive to events at the level of the ATPase, but not to the total ATPase activity, suggests that this rate may not be controlled by a delocalised energised state. Reduction of ATPase activity decreases the extent of the fluorescence enhancement and a relationship between the change in probe fluorescence and ATPase activity is given.4. The results in this paper are discussed in the context of the mechanisms which have been proposed to account for the fluorescence enhancements of N-aryl naphthalene sulphonate probes upon energisation of submitochondrial particles.  相似文献

The Ca++-antagonist nifedipine has been successfully employed in the treatment of non-gravid hypertension, and was found to inhibit uterine contractions in the perimenstrual period, as well as during premature labour in animal models. The use of antihypertensive drugs in pregnancy introduces the possibility of iatrogenic foetal distress. It has been established that nifedipine crosses the placental barrier in the sheep and causes a fall in mean arterial pressure and tachycardia in both the ewe and the foetus. This paper examines the effects of nifedipine on the foetus when administered to the pregnant ewe. Catheters and electrodes were implanted by surgical procedures in 15 ewes and foetal lambs between days 118 and 122 of gestation. The redistribution of foetal blood flow was measured by the radioactive microsphere injection technique. The infusion of nifedipine caused a 9% increase in the combined ventricular output (CVO) from 446 to 509 ml/min/kg in the foetus. Foetal lung blood flow increased from 29 +/- 6 to 69 +/- 14 ml/min/kg while figures for the skeletal muscle flow were 109 +/- 34 and 141 +/- 41.6 ml/min/kg. Heart and brain blood flow, expressed as percentages of CVO showed variations of 4.3 and 5.6 per cent, respectively. Blood flow in the gut, placental membranes, skin, kidney and spleen was reduced. The present results show that nifedipine, in addition to its known effects causes a redistribution of the foetal circulation.  相似文献
