Effects of Cross-pollination and Flower Removal on Fruit Set in Macadamia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Macadamia racemes were cross-pollinated and had flowers removedto determine whether manipulation of initial fruit set wouldaffect final fruit set or yield. Examination of flowers collected7 d after pollination indicated that the cross-pollination treatmentgenerally induced a small (13-19%) but significant increasein the number of pollen grains per stigma. All flowers possessedsome pollen grains, but in all cases cross-pollination approximatelydoubled the percentage of flowers with a pollen tube at thebase of the style (42-68% of flowers on cross-pollinated racemescompared with 21-35% of flowers on control racemes). Fruit setafter 14 d was always improved by cross-pollination, and thistranslated into increased final fruit numbers on two out offour occasions. In these two cases, kernel weights were increasedby 24 and 31% in the cross-pollinated treatments. This indicatesa possible xenic (paternal parent) effect in macadamia. Flowerremoval resulted in retention of a greater percentage of flowersas fruits, so that only severe reductions in flower number decreasedfinal fruit numbers. Following increasing calls for environmental safety over the past 2 decades, persistent pesticides are being replaced by more rapidly degradable products. However, even these pesticides can affect non-target species, and may be associated with slow growth and increased susceptibility to viral and bacterial infections. In this study, juvenile white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (also named Penaeus vannamei) were challenged by intramuscular injection with Vibrio parahaemolyticus after 4 d prior exposure to methyl parathion in feed pellets at 0.080 microg g(-1). The bacterial injection control group consisted of shrimp fed pellets containing the methyl parathion-carrier solvent acetonitrile. Three additional control groups comprised 2 sterile saline-injection groups fed pellets containing methyl parathion or acetonitrile prior to injection, and 1 uninjected group fed normal pellets. Cumulative mortalities were recorded on the 4th and 8th days, and the presence of histological lesions was recorded on the 8th day. Cumulative mortalities were significantly higher in the group exposed to methyl parathion and bacteria on Day 8. Histological lesions, typical of vibriosis, were significantly associated with the injection of V. parahaemolyticus. The study provides strong experimental evidence that prior exposure to methyl parathion can increase the severity of Vibrio infections.  相似文献

This paper presents a computer program for analyzing disease prevalence data from animal survival experiments in which there may also be some serial sacrifice. The method has been described in Biometrics 35 (1979) 221-234. The user is interrogated about the details of particular models he wishes to fit. Then a generalized EM algorithm is used to compute maximum likelihood estimates of various quantities of interest concerning the effects of treatment, time and presence of other diseases on the prevalences and lethalities of specific diseases of interest.  相似文献

We have isolated the delta-globin gene of the New-World spider monkey, Ateles geoffroyi, and compared its nucleotide sequence with those of other primate delta- and beta-globin genes. Among primate delta-globin genes, the rate of nonsynonymous substitutions is much less than the rate of synonymous substitutions. This suggests that primate delta- globin genes may remain under evolutionary conservation, perhaps because hemoglobin A2 has an as yet unknown physiological importance.   相似文献

This study aimed to elucidate the bacteriological events occurring within the gut of Calliphora vicina, selected as the European representative of blow flies held responsible for the spread of anthrax during epidemics in certain parts of the world. Green-fluorescent-protein-carrying derivatives of Bacillus anthracis were used. These lacked either one of the virulence plasmids pXO1 and pXO2 and were infected, or not infected, with a worm intestine phage (Wip4) known to influence the phenotype and survival of the pathogen. Blood meals were prepared for the flies by inoculation of sheep blood with germinated and, in case of pXO2+ strains, encapsulated cells of the four B. anthracis strains. After being fed for 4 h an initial 10 flies were externally disinfected with peracetic acid to ensure subsequent quantitation representing ingested B. anthracis only. Following neutralization, they were crushed in sterile saline. Over each of the ensuing 7 to 10 days, 10 flies were removed and processed the same way. In the absence of Wip4, strains showed steady declines to undetectable in the total B. anthracis counts, within 7–9 days. With the phage infected strains, the falls in viable counts were significantly more rapid than in their uninfected counterparts. Spores were detectable in flies for longer periods than vegetative bacteria. In line with the findings in both biting and non-biting flies of early workers our results indicate that B. anthracis does not multiply in the guts of blow flies and survival is limited to a matter of days.  相似文献

Background

Adequate organ function and good performance status (PS) are common eligibility criteria for phase I trials. As inflammation is pathogenic and prognostic in cancer we investigated the prognostic performance of inflammation-based indices including the neutrophil (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR).

Methods

We studied inflammatory scores in 118 unselected referrals. NLR normalization was recalculated at disease reassessment. Each variable was assessed for progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS) on uni- and multivariate analyses and tested for 90 days survival (90DS) prediction using receiving operator curves (ROC).

Results

We included 118 patients with median OS 4.4 months, 23% PS>1. LDH≥450 and NLR≥5 were multivariate predictors of OS (p<0.001). NLR normalization predicted for longer OS (p<0.001) and PFS (p<0.05). PS and NLR ranked as most accurate predictors of both 90DS with area under ROC values of 0.66 and 0.64, and OS with c-score of 0.69 and 0.60. The combination of NLR+PS increased prognostic accuracy to 0.72. The NLR was externally validated in a cohort of 126 subjects.

Conclusions

We identified the NLR as a validated and objective index to improve patient selection for experimental therapies, with its normalization following treatment predicting for a survival benefit of 7 months. Prospective validation of the NLR is warranted.  相似文献

Two DNA probes and a number of oligonucleotide probes were designed from the virulence factor genes of Bacillus anthracis. These probes were tested for specificity against 52 B. anthracis strains and 233 Bacillus strains encompassing 23 other species. A rapid slot blotting technique was used for screening the large numbers of isolates involved. All probes tested appeared to be specific for B. anthracis under high stringency conditions. These probes could differentiate between virulent and avirulent strains. The probes were also applied to the detection of B. anthracis in routine environmental and clinical samples. A non-radioactive hybridization and detection system based on digoxigenin-11-dUTP was developed.  相似文献

Acyl CoA:diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) 1 catalyzes the final step of triglyceride (TG) synthesis. We show that acute administration of a DGAT1 inhibitor (DGAT1i) by oral gavage or genetic deletion of intestinal Dgat1 (intestine-Dgat1−/−) markedly reduced postprandial plasma TG and retinyl ester excursions by inhibiting chylomicron secretion in mice. Loss of DGAT1 activity did not affect the efficiency of retinol esterification, but it did reduce TG and retinoid accumulation in the small intestine. In contrast, inhibition of microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) reduced chylomicron secretion after oral fat/retinol loads, but with accumulation of dietary TG and retinoids in the small intestine. Lack of intestinal accumulation of TG and retinoids in DGAT1i-treated or intestine-Dgat1−/− mice resulted, in part, from delayed gastric emptying associated with increased plasma levels of glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1. However, neither bypassing the stomach through duodenal oil injection nor inhibiting the receptor for GLP-1 normalized postprandial TG or retinyl esters excursions in the absence of DGAT1 activity. In summary, intestinal DGAT1 inhibition or deficiency acutely delayed gastric emptying and inhibited chylomicron secretion; however, the latter occurred when gastric emptying was normal or when lipid was administered directly into the small intestine. Long-term hepatic retinoid metabolism was not impacted by DGAT1 inhibition.  相似文献

BackgroundTaller adult height is associated with lower risks of ischemic heart disease in mendelian randomization (MR) studies, but little is known about the causal relevance of height for different subtypes of ischemic stroke. The present study examined the causal relevance of height for different subtypes of ischemic stroke.Methods and findingsHeight-associated genetic variants (up to 2,337) from previous genome-wide association studies (GWASs) were used to construct genetic instruments in different ancestral populations. Two-sample MR approaches were used to examine the associations of genetically determined height with ischemic stroke and its subtypes (cardioembolic stroke, large-artery stroke, and small-vessel stroke) in multiple ancestries (the MEGASTROKE consortium, which included genome-wide studies of stroke and stroke subtypes: 60,341 ischemic stroke cases) supported by additional cases in individuals of white British ancestry (UK Biobank [UKB]: 4,055 cases) and Chinese ancestry (China Kadoorie Biobank [CKB]: 10,297 cases). The associations of genetically determined height with established cardiovascular and other risk factors were examined in 336,750 participants from UKB and 58,277 participants from CKB. In MEGASTROKE, genetically determined height was associated with a 4% lower risk (odds ratio [OR] 0.96; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.94, 0.99; p = 0.007) of ischemic stroke per 1 standard deviation (SD) taller height, but this masked a much stronger positive association of height with cardioembolic stroke (13% higher risk, OR 1.13 [95% CI 1.07, 1.19], p < 0.001) and stronger inverse associations with large-artery stroke (11% lower risk, OR 0.89 [0.84, 0.95], p < 0.001) and small-vessel stroke (13% lower risk, OR 0.87 [0.83, 0.92], p < 0.001). The findings in both UKB and CKB were directionally concordant with those observed in MEGASTROKE, but did not reach statistical significance: For presumed cardioembolic stroke, the ORs were 1.08 (95% CI 0.86, 1.35; p = 0.53) in UKB and 1.20 (0.77, 1.85; p = 0.43) in CKB; for other subtypes of ischemic stroke in UKB, the OR was 0.97 (95% CI 0.90, 1.05; p = 0.49); and for other nonlacunar stroke and lacunar stroke in CKB, the ORs were 0.89 (0.80, 1.00; p = 0.06) and 0.99 (0.88, 1.12; p = 0.85), respectively. In addition, genetically determined height was also positively associated with atrial fibrillation (available only in UKB), and with lean body mass and lung function, and inversely associated with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in both British and Chinese ancestries. Limitations of this study include potential bias from assortative mating or pleiotropic effects of genetic variants and incomplete generalizability of genetic instruments to different populations.ConclusionsThe findings provide support for a causal association of taller adult height with higher risk of cardioembolic stroke and lower risk of other ischemic stroke subtypes in diverse ancestries. Further research is needed to understand the shared biological and physical pathways underlying the associations between height and stroke risks, which could identify potential targets for treatments to prevent stroke.
