Gymnocharacinus bergi (Pisces, Characidae), an endemic fish in the headwaters of the Valcheta stream in northern Patagonia, displays a fright reaction. As this species inhabits a rapid stream, we hypothesized that the alarm reaction might be socially transmitted through visual information, because the detection of alarm pheromone would be restricted to those fish located downstream from the releaser. Alarm substances elicited a decrease in the swimming activity and a tendency to remain at the bottom of the aquarium. Individuals that observed the fright reaction, but were not exposed to the pheromone, spent significantly more time at the bottom of the aquarium imitating the alarm response, and tended to approach the others. Gregarious behaviour was observed; however, interactions (number of approaches) were stronger between those fish held prior to testing in the same aquarium; smaller fish in particular tended to get closer to bigger ones. The members of the family Syngnathidae stand out among the bony fish for their specific parental care: the male bear embryos in a particular brood chamber or pouch. The physiological role of the latter is discussed in the literature in detail. The pouch is rather multifunctional; its osmoregulatory function is the most well studied. The unusual parental care supposes that some specific features should exist in the reproduction biology and development in these fish. This idea is supported by detailed studies of the ovaries and oogenesis in pipefish. On the other hand, the structure of the testes and specific features of spermatogenesis in the representatives of the family Syngnathidae remain poorly studied. The interest in the reproduction and development of pipefish is also determined, to a certain degree, by the fact that in the countries of Southeast Asia seahorses are objects of fishing and are used as a source of pharmacological materials comprising active compounds. The feeding habits and reproductive biology of the Ghana mole‐rat, Cryptomys zechi (Matchie), were studied in a Guinea savanna woodland in Ghana. Both tunnel contents and stomach content analysis indicated that bulbs and tubers constituted the commonest and most preferred food items, although some animal food materials were also consumed. Five plant species, Urgenia altissima, Manihot utilisima, Curuligo sp., Oxalis corniculata and Archis hypogea, were the most popular plant food source. Breeding occurred during the rainy season (March–August) and was at its peak in July. There is evidence that the species is capable of producing two litters in a year. In a colony, reproduction is restricted to one female and one male. Males reached sexual maturity at a lower body weights (105 g) than females (155 g). Estimated mean litter size was 1.5 (range 1–2), the smallest among the bathergids. Available data on birth weights of three other species of social Cryptomys indicate that C. zechi has the highest birth weight, which is comparable to that of solitary bathyergids. 相似文献

The results of 3-year observation on emergence of H. influenzae antibiotic resistant strains in Moscow are summarized. The study included 566 strains isolated from patients in 2002-2004. The susceptibility was determined by the 2-fold microdilution method on the Haemophilus test medium. The percentage of the resistant strains isolated in 2002, 2003 and 2004 was the following: ampicillin --4.9, 3.2 and 3.6%, tetracycline--3.3, 3.2 and 1.8% and co-trimoxazole--10.9, 20.9 and 20% respectively. The strains isolated in 2003 and 2004 were resistant to azithromycin in 0.6 and 1.8% of the isolates and to clarithromycin in 1.3 and 3.2% of the isolates respectively. Five isolates differed by the minimum resistance to ampicillin whereas producing no beta-lactamase (BLNAR strains). The drugs of choice for the treatment of respiratory tract infections mainly due to H. influenzae, i.e. acute otitis and sinusitis, chronic bronchitis exacerbation and sometimes pneumonia remain betalactam antibiotics. From the microbiological viewpoint the inhibitor-protected aminopenicillins, cefuroxime and cefotaxime have no significant advantages vs. amoxycillin. ABSTRACT. Latitudinal variation in population structure during the winter has been reported in many migratory birds, but has been documented in few species of waterfowl. Variation in environmental and social conditions at wintering sites can potentially influence the population dynamics of differential migrants. We examined latitudinal variation in sex and age classes of wintering Pacific Black Brant ( Branta bernicla nigricans ). Brant are distributed along a wide latitudinal gradient from Alaska to Mexico during the winter. Accordingly, migration distances for brant using different wintering locations are highly variable and winter settlement patterns are likely associated with a spatially variable food resource. We used resightings of brant banded in southwestern Alaska to examine sex and age ratios of birds wintering at Boundary Bay in British Columbia, and at San Quintin Bay, Ojo de Liebre Lagoon, and San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja California from 1998 to 2000. Sex ratios were similar among wintering locations for adults and were consistent with the mating strategy of geese. The distribution of juveniles varied among wintering areas, with greater proportions of juveniles observed at northern (San Quintin Bay and Ojo de Liebre Lagoon) than at southern (San Ignacio Lagoon) locations in Baja California. We suggest that age-related variation in the winter distribution of Pacific Black Brant is mediated by variation in productivity among individuals at different wintering locations and by social interactions among wintering family groups. 相似文献

Accumulation of lead and zinc was studied in the moss Funariahygrometrica Hedw. collected from mine tailings. Heavy metalaccumulation in gametophytes and sporophytes was quantifiedby graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) andinductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES).Pb and Zn accumulation in the placental zone was analysed byx-ray scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) microanalysis. Spectrometry showed that whilemoss gametophytes accumulated considerable concentrations ofheavy metals, sporophytes accumulated only small concentrationsof metals. X-ray SEM and TEM showed that the two metals accumulatedin placental transfer cells on both the gametophytic and sporophyticsides. To investigate the uptake pattern for both metals undercontrolled conditions, F. hygrometrica plants collected froma non-polluted site were treated in the laboratory with separatesolutions of Pb and Zn at two concentrations (10-2and 10-4 M)for 24 or 168 h. Metal accumulation was analysed separatelyin gametophytes and sporophytes using GFAAS and ICPAES.Each generation had a different accumulation quotient for bothmetals, and gametophytes accumulated significantly more metalthan sporophytes. Concentrations of Zn in sporophytes were alwayshigher than concentrations of Pb. DNA minor groove-binding compounds (polyamides) that target insect and vertebrate telomeric repeats with high specificity were synthesized. Base pair recognition of these polyamides is based on the presence of the heterocyclic amino acids pyrrole and imidazole. One compound (TH52B) interacts uniquely and with excellent specificity (K(d) = 0.12 nM) with two consecutive insect-type telomeric repeats (TTAGG). A related compound, TH59, displays high specificity (K(d) = 0.5 nM) for tandem vertebrate (TTAGGG) and insect telomeric repeats. The high affinity and specificity of these compounds were achieved by bidentate binding of two flexibly linked DNA-binding moieties. Epifluorescence microscopy studies show that fluorescent derivatives of TH52B and TH59 stain insect or vertebrate telomeres of chromosomes and nuclei sharply. Importantly, the telomere-specific polyamide signals of HeLa chromosomes co-localize with the immunofluorescence signals of the telomere-binding protein TRF1. Our results demonstrate that telomere-specific compounds allow rapid estimation of relative telomere length. The insect-specific compound TH52 was shown to be incorporated rapidly into growing Sf9 cells, underlining the potential of these compounds for telomere biology and possibly human medicine. 相似文献

The repair of oxidative base lesions in DNA is a coordinated chain of reactions that includes removal of the damaged base, incision of the phosphodiester backbone at the abasic sugar residue, incorporation of an undamaged nucleotide and sealing of the DNA strand break. Although removal of a damaged base in mammalian cells is initiated primarily by a damage-specific DNA glycosylase, several lyases and DNA polymerases may contribute to the later stages of repair. DNA polymerase beta (Pol beta) was implicated recently as the major polymerase involved in repair of oxidative base lesions; however, the identity of the lyase participating in the repair of oxidative lesions is unclear. We studied the mechanism by which mammalian cell extracts process DNA substrates containing a single 8-oxoguanine or 5,6-dihydrouracil at a defined position. We find that, when repair synthesis proceeds through a Pol beta-dependent single nucleotide replacement mechanism, the 5'-deoxyribosephosphate lyase activity of Pol beta is essential for repair of both lesions. 相似文献
