Several recent studies report how laboratory-raised, non-human primates exposed to tool use can exhibit intelligent behaviors, such as imitation and reference vocal control, that are never seen in their wild counterparts. Tool-use training appears to forge a novel cortico-cortical connection that underlies this boost in capacity, which normally exists only as latent potential in lower primates. Although tool-use training is patently non-naturalistic, its marked effects on brain organization and behavior could shed light on the evolution of higher intelligence in humans.  相似文献

The repeating units of the histone gene cluster containing the H1, H2A, H2B and H4 genes were amplified by PCR from the Drosophila melanogaster species subgroup, i.e., D. yakuba, D. erecta, D. sechellia, D. mauritiana, D. teissieri and D. orena. The PCR products were cloned and their nucleotide sequences of about 4.6-4.8kbp were determined to elucidate the mechanism of molecular evolution of the histone gene family. The heterogeneity among the histone gene repeating units was 0.6% and 0.7% for D. yakuba and D. sechellia, respectively, indicating the same level of heterogeneity as in the H3 gene region of D. melanogaster. Divergence of the genes among species even in the most closely related ones was much greater than the heterogeneity among family members, indicating a concerted mode of evolution for the histone gene repeating units. Among the species in the D. melanogaster species subgroup, the histone gene regions as well as 3rd codon position of the coding region showed nearly the same GC contents. These results suggested that the previous conclusion on analysis of the H3 gene regions, the gene family evolution in a concerted fashion, holds true for the whole histone gene repeating unit.  相似文献

Vssilk 5 is a gene encoding a component protein of the silk produced by the larvae of the yellow hornet (Vespa simillima, Vespinae, Vespidae). In this study, we deduced the complete cDNA sequence of Vssilk 5. It was found that 2 silk proteins, Vssilk 5 N and Vssilk 5 C, in the cocoon of the yellow hornet are both encoded by the Vssilk 5 gene. Vssilk 5 N and 5 C are the N- and C-terminal regions, respectively, of the Vssilk 5 pro-protein (Vssilk 5p). The complete amino acid sequences of Vssilk 5 N and Vssilk 5 C were deduced. Although a non-repetitive amino acid sequence and coiled-coil structure are properties common to the major components of silk proteins produced by the larvae of the social superfamilies Apoidea and Vespoidea of the Apocrita, nearly the entire sequence of Vssilk 5 C consisted of a repeated sequence of amino acids, and the calculated coiled-coil probability for this protein was low. Vssilk 5 N is a protein without a repetitive amino acid sequence and has a low coiled-coil probability. Moreover, we found a water soluble protein, Vssilk 5S that is likely segmented from Vssilk 5 C and contains an N-terminal sequence identical to that of Vssilk 5 C.  相似文献

The chromatophore of a novel thermophilic purple photosynthetic bacterium, Chromatium tepidum, had light-harvesting BChl proteins which gave absorption maxima at 917, 855 and 800 nm at 20°C. These antenna complexes were found to have BChl of the a type [4]. This is, therefore, the first example of a BChl a antenna complex which shows a long-wavelength absorption up to 917 nm. Treatment by Triton X-100 and successive sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis separated these antenna complexes into two groups. One of them has one antenna component which absorbs around 917 nm (B917). The other contains at least an antennae which absorb maximally at 800 and 855 nm (B800–855). The temperature-dependent changes of absorption, circular dichroism and emission spectra were reversible up to 70°C in the intact chromatophore and in the isolated B800–855 complex. On the contrary, the isolated complex B917 lost its absorption irreversibly over the temperature of 50°C. These results suggest a membrane structure which is essential for the thermostability of chromatophores from C. tepidum.  相似文献

High resolution NMR spectroscopy has been demonstrated to be capable of measuring the CO2/O2 specificity factor of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase. 31P-NMR provides a simple method for quantitatively determining the ratio of the products, 3-phosphoglycerate and phosphoglycolate. Both the specificity factor and degree of the reaction can be measured during the reaction without the need for complete consumption of ribulose bisphosphate or removal of it from the reaction mixture. Inorganic phosphate can also be detected and this may be used for monitoring the phosphatase activity and pH changes. Measurement by highly sensitive 1H-NMR is most time-efficient and is particularly suitable for the Rubisco with a high specificity factor. By optimizing the experimental conditions, it is possible to follow the simultaneous reactions in situ. The NMR method has been applied to three Rubisco enzymes with different values of specificity factor. Both 31P- and 1H-NMR gave similar results, agreeing with those previously reported by other methods.  相似文献

Social brain function, which allows us to adapt our behavior to social context, is poorly understood at the single-cell level due largely to technical limitations. But the questions involved are vital: How do neurons recognize and modulate their activity in response to social context? To probe the mechanisms involved, we developed a novel recording technique, called multi-dimensional recording, and applied it simultaneously in the left parietal cortices of two monkeys while they shared a common social space. When the monkeys sat near each other but did not interact, each monkey's parietal activity showed robust response preference to action by his own right arm and almost no response to action by the other's arm. But the preference was broken if social conflict emerged between the monkeys-specifically, if both were able to reach for the same food item placed on the table between them. Under these circumstances, parietal neurons started to show complex combinatorial responses to motion of self and other. Parietal cortex adapted its response properties in the social context by discarding and recruiting different neural populations. Our results suggest that parietal neurons can recognize social events in the environment linked with current social context and form part of a larger social brain network.  相似文献

Morphology and photophosphorylation of chromatophores from t Rhodospirillum rubrum have been investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and in situ 31P-NMR measurement. Two components, designated as light and heavy fractions, with different average sizes and size distributions were detected by the DLS and can be separated by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The light fraction has an average size of about 140 nm in diameter with a narrow distribution and shows a high activity of photophosphorylation. About 70 of ADP were found to be converted to ATP purely by the photophosphorylative reaction. In contrast, the heavy fraction has a broad size distribution centered around 350 nm and a low activity of photophosphorylation. Only about 50 of ADP was converted into ATP and AMP with a ratio of 7:3, indicating that most membrane-bound adenylate kinase are attached on the particles of the heavy fraction. Effect of physical disruption on the structural integrity of chromatophores has been examined by using sonication with various oscillating strengths. The result shows that the morphology of chromatophores for both light and heavy fractions is relatively stable to the disruption, while the photophosphorylative activity of the light fraction is very sensitive to the disrupting strength, suggesting that the internal structure of the purified chromatophores could be partially damaged by the disruption.  相似文献

The middle temporal visual area (MT, also known as V5) is a visual association area that is particularly evolved in the primate brain. The MT receives input from the primary visual area (V1), constitutes part of the dorsal visual pathway, and plays an essential role in processing motion. Connections between the MT and V1 in the primate brain are formed after birth, and are related to the maturation of visual system. However, it remains to be determined what molecular mechanisms control the formation and maturation of the visual system. Cadherins are transmembrane proteins, originally isolated as cell adhesion molecules, which have multiple roles in synapse formation and function. To investigate potential involvement of cadherins in development of the primate visual system, we examined type II cadherin expression (cadherin‐6, ‐8, ‐12) in cortical and thalamic visual areas of pre‐ and postnatal brains of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). In the prenatal brain, cadherin‐6 was dominantly expressed in the pulvino‐MT pathway whereas cadherin‐8 was dominant in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN)‐V1 pathway. During postnatal development, there was a downregulation of cadherin‐6 and upregulation of cadherin‐8 expression in the MT. The timing of this cadherin exchange preceded the development of V1‐MT connections. Our results suggest the possibility that changes in cadherin expression are involved in the development of the primate visual system, and that a switch in cadherin expression may be a general mechanism to control neural plasticity of highly cognitive abilities.  相似文献
