Host plant resistance and linear furanocoumarin content of Apium accessions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Linear furanocoumarin contents and antibiotic resistance to Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) were documented for Apium species being investigated in a celery breeding program. In no-choice tests, L. trifolii fed more, produced more offspring, and had the highest pupal and adult productivity on the widely planted cultivar 'Tall Utah' 52-70R (Apium graveolens L.). Antibiotic effects of the commercial cultivar 'Tall Utah' 52-70 HK and University of California families 87A-147 and 87A-338, derived from A. chilense Hook and Arn., were intermediate. Only A. nodiflorum (L.) Lag (accession 87A-236) did not allow survival beyond the larval stage. Concentrations of the carcinogenic and mutagenic linear furanocoumarins varied by location within plants (leaves usually greater than petioles), by specific compound (trend: psoralen less than xanthotoxin less than bergapten or isopimpinellin), and between accessions. A. nodiflorum had the lowest foliar levels of phototoxic furanocoumarins (11.8 micrograms/g fresh weight) and the best potential for use in the breeding program. Foliar levels of phototoxic furanocoumarins (psoralen, bergapten, and xanthotoxin) in plants 87A-147-3 (406 micrograms/g), 87A-147-2 (292.9 micrograms/g), and the family 87A-338 (265.9 micrograms/g) were 22.6, 16.3, and 14.8 times higher, respectively, than the concentration known to produce contact dermatitis (18 micrograms/g). Even with such variability in concentration, the foliar content of linear furanocoumarins (individually or total) and L. trifolii adult production were not correlated.  相似文献

The toxicities to neonate Spodoptera exigua and Trichoplusia ni of lyophilized powders obtained from sporulated liquid cultures (referred to as sporulated cultures) and Escherichia coli-expressed P1 [cryIA(a) cryIA(b) cryIA(c)] protoxins from three-gene strains of NRD-12 and HD-1 of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki were determined by using diet incorporation bioassays. Although sporulated cultures from both strains were more toxic to T. ni than S. exigua, there were no differences in toxicity between NRD-12 and HD-1. Toxicities of the three individual P1 protoxins against S. exigua varied by at least fivefold, with the cryIA(b) protein being the most toxic. These same protoxins varied in toxicity against T. ni by at least 16-fold, with the cryIA(c) protein being the most toxic. However, when tested against either S. exigua or T. ni, there were no differences in toxicity between an NRD-12 P1 protoxin and the corresponding HD-1 P1 protoxin. Comparing the toxicities of individual protoxins with that of sporulated cultures demonstrates that no individual protoxin was as toxic to S. exigua as the sporulated cultures. However, this same comparison against T. ni shows that both the cryIA(b) and cryIA(c) proteins are at least as toxic as the sporulated cultures. Results from this study suggest that NRD-12 is not more toxic to S. exigua than HD-1, that different protein types have variable host activity, and that other B. thuringiensis components are not required for T. ni toxicity but that other components such as spores might be required for S. exigua toxicity.  相似文献

We examined the effect of two avocadofurans, 2-(pentadecyl)furan and 2-(heptadecyl)furan, from avocado idioblast oil cells on maturation and larval feeding behavior of a generalist insect herbivore, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Experiments were conducted using two larval sizes: early-stadium larvae refer to those larvae from experiments initiated with neonates while late-stadium larvae refer to those larvae from experiments initiated with third instars. In order to use selected sublethal doses for developmental and behavioral studies on early- and late-stadium larvae, log-dose probit lines were determined using diet incorporation bioassays. Both avocadofurans had similar toxicities to early-stadium larvae [LC50=2.2 and 1.9 moles/g of diet for 2-(pentadecyl)furan and 2-(heptadecyl)furan, respectively] and late-stadium larvae (LC50=3.0 and 3.4 moles/g of diet, respectively). In diet bioassays extending from egg hatch to adult emergence, the avocadofurans significantly prolonged larval developmental times and reduced S. exigua pupal weights. In 7 d no-choice bioassays initiated with cohorts of newly-molted third instars, the avocadofurans significantly reduced larval weights at various sublethal concentrations (below LC50 values). To test larval feeding deterrence effects of these avocadofurans, choice tests were conducted using early and older instar larvae. A significantly higher proportion of early-stadium larvae preferred control diet over diet treated with either avocadofuran at several sublethal concentrations. Similarly, choice tests with late-stadium larvae showed greater proportions of larvae on control diet than treated diet even at concentrations below the LC50. Moreover, late-stadium larvae consumed significantly more of the control diet than the treated diet. Thus, the avocadofurans may act as feeding deterrents as well as toxicants in plant protection against non-adapted insect herbivores.  相似文献

It has become increasingly important to understand the relationship between dietary intake and blood chemistry and hematological profiles in pinniped populations, especially where nutritional stress has been implicated in population declines. Blood chemistry and hematology reference ranges have been commonly reported for both free‐ranging and captive harbor seals, but seasonal and dietary fluctuations are limited to only a few studies. We quantified changes in plasma metabolites and hematology values in captive harbor seals on different diets over two years. Of 29 blood chemistry and hematology variables examined in captive harbor seals, ALT, AST, GGT, creatinine, and BUN:creatinine were influenced by diet. BUN, Na+, Cl?, Hct, and Hb were influenced by season. Diet did not affect hematology variables. While these data were collected on captive animals, we assume seasonal and dietary influences would be comparable in free‐ranging seals. According to this study, controlling for season during sampling becomes important when assessing blood chemistry values as an index of foraging status or health.  相似文献

Microplitis bicoloratus Chen (Hymenoptera:Braconidae:Microgastrinae), a new species of Microplitis Förster from China, is a solitary endoparasitoid of the larvae of the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). This parasitoid is the first to be successfully reared and evaluated in the laboratory as a potential agent for the biological control of S. litura in China. Oviposition, immature development, and the effects of parasitism on the development of S. litura were studied. In long-term oviposition trials, females laid eggs on S. litura larvae for up to 10 days; oviposition was heavily skewed toward the first few days, with approximately one third of the eggs laid on day 1 and over 50% laid by day 3. This rapid oviposition rate increases the potential for biological suppression of host populations because the likelihood of mortality for the parasites from exposure to detrimental environmental factors or generalist predators increases with time. Immature development of the parasitoid in its host only required 7 days: eggs hatched within 24 h, the first instar larva required 2 days, the second instar larva needed 3 days, and the third instar larvae exited the host and pupated in 1 day, at 27±1°C, 60–80% relative humidity and a 12:12-h (long day) photoperiod. The development of the parasitized hosts was disrupted. When the parasitoid larvae finished development, the body weights of host larvae were significantly reduced regardless of which host instar was parasitized. Our results suggest that M. bicoloratus has considerable potential as a biological control agent for S. litura.  相似文献

Various theories emphasize that intergroup competition should affect intragroup cooperation and social relationships, especially if the cost of intergroup competition outweighs that of intragroup competition. This cost of intergroup competition may be quantified by changes in physiological status, such as in the steroid hormones cortisol (C) and testosterone (T), which rise or are depressed during periods of energetic stress, respectively. Here we tested for changes in urinary C and T after intergroup encounters (IGEs) among wild red‐tailed monkeys (Cercopithecus ascanius), a species that experiences frequent intergroup feeding competition, at the Ngogo station in Kibale National Park, Uganda. We assayed 108 urine samples, of which 36 were collected after IGEs, from 23 individuals in four social groups. Bayesian multilevel models controlling for various confounds revealed that IGEs increased C and decreased T relative to baseline, consistent with an energetic cost to IGEs. The C change was more apparent in samples collected early after IGEs, suggesting an anticipatory increase, whereas the T change was stronger in later samples, suggesting sustained energetic trade‐offs. Hormone responses were not affected by the IGE outcome. This cost to intergroup competition, together with little evidence for intragroup competition in redtails and other guenons, establishes an interesting test case for theories emphasizing the effect of intergroup competition on intragroup cooperation.  相似文献

Rehabilitating pinniped pups are often admitted to care centers as neonates and generally lack maternal investment and are in poor body condition. Upon admittance to a rehabilitation facility, pups are typically fed a milk replacement formula via gavage, which is switched to frozen fish upon weaning. While rehabilitation has been successful in terms of recovery and release, preweaning growth rates in captivity are consistently lower than in the wild. Indicators of stress (cortisol and total thyroxine; TT4), and standard morphometrics, of harbor seal pups in rehabilitation (n = 20) were determined for both preweaned and weaned pups. Hormone concentrations and standard morphometrics from pups in care were compared with free‐ranging harbor seal pups (n = 59). Pups in rehabilitation gained mass on both milk and fish diets. Preweaned pups had greater mean serum cortisol and similar TT4 concentrations than weaned pups. Free‐ranging harbor seal pups were heavier and longer than preweaned and weaned pups in rehabilitation. The free‐ranging pups had the lowest cortisol and highest TT4 concentrations of any of the pups. These results suggest that weaned pups that have undergone rehabilitation are not physiologically equivalent to free‐ranging weaned pups. Additional research is needed regarding physiological changes in endocrine values during early development under captive care conditions. This information should be useful to marine mammal rehabilitation centers in their development of care protocols and release criteria for rehabilitating harbor seal pups. Changes in trophic level interactions due to global climate change and the increasing occurrence of pollution are likely to have consequences for natural enemies. Specifically, information regarding the effects of these factors on insect parasitoids is relatively sparse. We examined the individual and joint effects of temperature and the pollutant selenium on the fitness correlates of the parasitoid wasp Cotesia marginiventris (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), parasitizing Spodoptera exigua (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Our specific objective was to determine in a factorial experiment how three temperatures (constant 28.6°C, constant 33°C and a fluctuating temperature between 28.6 and 33°C) and three concentrations of seleno-dl-methionine (0.00, 21.21, and 42.42 µg/g) affected the parasitoid's fitness and life history. Parasitoids failed to complete development at the constant 33°C, but developed significantly faster at the fluctuating temperature compared to the constant 28.6°C. There were significant declines due to increased temperature, but not selenium, on C. marginiventris survival time, adult body weight, body size, hind tibia length, female life span and number of progeny that survived to adulthood. Mean generation times and the intrinsic rate of increase (r) further show that both of these life table statistics declined under conditions of increased temperatures. We discuss the implications of these results in helping to understand and predict the effectiveness of biological control programs and pest management strategies as climate changes in the presence of metal and metalloid pollution.  相似文献
