Phylogeography of pacific herring Clupea pallasii from Eurasian seas

Eleven samples of Pacific herring from the four seas of Eurasia (Sea of Japan, Sea of Okhotsk, Bering Sea, and White Sea), and one sample of Atlantic herring were analyzed. Complete and partial sequences of the mtDNA control region with the sizes up to 1071 bp were used. To verify the haplogroups identified, additional sequencing of the cytochrome oxidase I gene was performed. It was demonstrated that Pacific herring from the seas of Eurasia belonged to one mitochondrial haplogroup. The gene flow between the localities from different parts of the Far Eastern sea basins was about 11% per locality, per generation, which led to constant leveling of herring intraspecific differentiation. The data presented gave no reasons for subdivision of the herring populations in accordance to ecological characters (lacustrine and marine). Analysis of global molecular variance (global AMOVA) demonstrated that in Asian water basins, more than 98% of molecular polymorphism was found within the samples at the low level of significance (P < 0.05).     

Receptor agonists of macrophage migration inhibitory factor

The cytokine MIF is involved in inflammation and cell proliferation via pathways initiated by its binding to the transmembrane receptor CD74. MIF also promotes AMPK activation with potential benefits for response to myocardial infarction and ischemia-reperfusion. Structure-based molecular design has led to the discovery of not only antagonists, but also the first agonists of MIF-CD74 binding. The compounds contain a triazole core that is readily assembled via Cu-catalyzed click chemistry. The agonist and antagonist behaviors were confirmed via study of MIF-dependent ERK1/2 phosphorylation in human fibroblasts.     

Luminescence of Ca2+-activated photoprotein obelin initiated by NaOCl and MnCl2

The luminescence of obelin is initiated by NaOCl in a reaction mixture containing no calcium. The addition of Mn²⁺ enhances the light emission >300-fold. Sodium azide and histidine, as singlet oxygen quenchers, inhibit NaOCl-activated obelin luminescence in the presence or absence of Mn²⁺. This suggests that the addition of NaOCI to the mixture causes singlet oxygen formation (stimulated by Mn²⁺ ions), and singlet oxygen initiates the light-emitting reaction.

Following the publication of the last of the series of Flora Europaea Notulae, No. 20 in the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 76: 297–384 (1978), a number of additions or alterations have been drawn to our attention. These are published in continuation.     

Analysis of HI0220 protein from Haemophilus influenzae, a novel structural and functional analog of ArcB protein from Escherichia coli

A Haemophilus influenzae gene encoding a protein with high homology to ArcB receptor protein from Escherichia coli has been cloned. An error in the previously reported sequence of this gene has been found, thus increasing its open reading frame. The cloned gene comprising the entire open reading frame restores oxygen-dependent regulation of succinate dehydrogenase in an ArcB-deficient E. coli strain. Thus, this gene is a functional analog of ArcB from E. coli. By screening partially sequenced bacterial genomes using the BLAST program, proteins with high homology to ArcB protein from E. coli were found in Salmonella typhi, Yersinia pestis, Vibrio cholerae, and Pasteurella multocida. Comparison of these proteins with ArcB protein from E. coli and H. influenzae revealed conserved amino acid regions. Transmembrane helix II was shown to be highly homologous in all the ArcB-type proteins. The involvement of this region in ArcB-mediated oxygen-dependent regulation is suggested.     

Structure and function of microbial communities in soil from the southern Taiga

General regularities in the structure of the microbial communities of southern taiga soil ecosystems and taxonomic differences between the microbial communities of soils with different hydrothermal characteristics are discussed with reference to the main types of soils of the Central State Forest Biosphere Reserve.
