The exposure of paddy fields to arsenic (As) through groundwater irrigation is a serious concern that may not only lead to As accumulation to unacceptable levels but also interfere with mineral nutrients in rice grains. In the present field study, profiling of the mineral nutrients (iron (Fe), phosphorous, zinc, and selenium (Se)) was done in various rice genotypes with respect to As accumulation. A significant genotypic variation was observed in elemental retention on root Fe plaque and their accumulation in various plant parts including grains, specific As uptake (29–167 mg kg?1 dw), as well as As transfer factor (4–45%). Grains retained the least level of As (0.7–3%) with inorganic As species being the dominant forms, while organic As species, viz., dimethylarsinic acid and monomethylarsonic acid, were non-detectable. In all tested varieties, the level of Se was low (0.05–0.12 mg kg?1 dw), whereas that of As was high (0.4–1.68 mg kg?1 dw), considering their safe/recommended daily intake limits, which may not warrant their human consumption. Members of the Chenopodiaceae are the most dominant elements in the central Asian desert. The different genera and species within this family are common in desert vegetation types. Should it prove possible to link pollen types in this family to specific desert vegetation, it would be feasible to trace vegetation successions in the geological past. Nevertheless, the morphological similarity of pollen grains in the Chenopodiaceae rarely permits identification at the generic level. Although some pollen classifications of Chenopodiaceae have been proposed, none of them tried to link pollen types to specific desert vegetation types in order to explore their ecological significance. Based on the pollen morphological characters of 13 genera and 24 species within the Chenopodiaceae of eastern central Asia, we provide a new pollen classification of this family with six pollen types and link them to those plant communities dominated by Chenopodiaceae, for example, temperate dwarf semi‐arboreal desert (Haloxylon type), temperate succulent halophytic dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Suaeda, Kalidium, and Atriplex types), temperate annual graminoid desert (Kalidium type), temperate semi‐shrubby and dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Kalidium, Iljini, and Haloxylon types), and alpine cushion dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Krascheninnikovia type). The decomposition of litter and the supply of nutrients into and from the soil are two fundamental processes through which the above- and belowground world interact. Microbial biodiversity, and especially that of decomposers, plays a key role in these processes by helping litter decomposition. Yet the relative contribution of litter diversity and soil biodiversity in supporting multiple ecosystem services remains virtually unknown. Here we conducted a mesocosm experiment where leaf litter and soil biodiversity were manipulated to investigate their influence on plant productivity, litter decomposition, soil respiration, and enzymatic activity in the littersphere. We showed that both leaf litter diversity and soil microbial diversity (richness and community composition) independently contributed to explain multiple ecosystem functions. Fungal saprobes community composition was especially important for supporting ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF), plant production, litter decomposition, and activity of soil phosphatase when compared with bacteria or other fungal functional groups and litter species richness. Moreover, leaf litter diversity and soil microbial diversity exerted previously undescribed and significantly interactive effects on EMF and multiple individual ecosystem functions, such as litter decomposition and plant production. Together, our work provides experimental evidence supporting the independent and interactive roles of litter and belowground soil biodiversity to maintain ecosystem functions and multiple services. 相似文献

Glycyl-glutamine (Gly-Gln; beta-endorphin(30-31)) is an endogenous dipeptide that is synthesized through the posttranslational processing of beta-endorphin in brain stem regions that control respiration and autonomic function. This study tested the hypothesis that Gly-Gln administration to conscious rats will prevent the respiratory depression caused by morphine without affecting morphine antinociception. Rats were administered Gly-Gln (1-100 nmol) or saline (10 microl) intracerebroventricularly followed, 5 min later, by morphine (40 nmol icv). Arterial blood gases and pH were measured immediately before Gly-Gln and 30 min after morphine injection. Gly-Gln pretreatment inhibited morphine-induced hypercapnia, hypoxia, and acidosis significantly. The response was dose dependent and significant at Gly-Gln doses as low as 1 nmol. In contrast, Gly-Gln (1-300 nmol) had no effect on morphine-evoked antinociception in the paw withdrawal test. When given alone to otherwise untreated animals, Gly-Gln did not affect nociceptive latencies or blood gas values. These data indicate that Gly-Gln inhibits morphine-induced respiratory depression without compromising morphine antinociception. 相似文献

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has long been used clinically and experimentally as a diagnostic tool to obtain three-dimensional, high-resolution images of deep tissues. These images are enhanced by the administration of contrast agents such as paramagnetic Gd(III) complexes. Herein, we describe the preparation of a series of multimodal imaging agents in which paramagnetic Gd(III) complexes are conjugated to a fluorescent tetrapyrrole, namely, a porphyrazine (pz). Zinc metalated pzs conjugated to one, four, or eight paramagnetic Gd(III) complexes are reported. Among these conjugates, Zn-Pz-8Gd(III) exhibits an ionic relaxivity four times that of the monomeric Gd(III) agent, presumably because of increased molecular weight and a molecular relaxivity that is approximately thirty times larger, while retaining the intense electronic absorption and emission of the unmodified pz. Unlike current clinical MR agents, Zn-Pz-1Gd(III) is taken up by cells. This probe demonstrates intracellular fluorescence by confocal microscopy and provides significant contrast enhancement in MR images, as well as marked phototoxicity in assays of cellular viability. These results suggest that pz agents possess a new potential for use in cancer imaging by both MRI and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence, while acting as a platform for photodynamic therapy. 相似文献

All organisms that have been studied until now have been found to have differential distribution of simple sequence repeats (SSRs), with more SSRs in intergenic than in coding sequences. SSR distribution was investigated in Archaea genomes where complete chromosome sequences of 19 Archaea were analyzed with the program SPUTNIK to find di- to penta-nucleotide repeats. The number of repeats was determined for the complete chromosome sequences and for the coding and non-coding sequences. Different from what has been found for other groups of organisms, there is an abundance of SSRs in coding regions of the genome of some Archaea. Dinucleotide repeats were rare and CG repeats were found in only two Archaea. In general, trinucleotide repeats are the most abundant SSR motifs; however, pentanucleotide repeats are abundant in some Archaea. Some of the tetranucleotide and pentanucleotide repeat motifs are organism specific. In general, repeats are short and CG-rich repeats are present in Archaea having a CG-rich genome. Among the 19 Archaea, SSR density was not correlated with genome size or with optimum growth temperature. Pentanucleotide density had an inverse correlation with the CG content of the genome. 相似文献

Novel oxazolidinone antibacterials bearing a variety of 3-indolylglyoxamide substituents have been explored in an effort to improve the spectrum and potency of this class of agents. A subclass of this series was also made with the diversity at C-5 terminus. These derivatives have been screened against a panel of clinically relevant Gram-positive pathogens and fastidious Gram-negative organisms. Several analogs in this series were identified with in vitro activity superior to linezolid (MIC=0.25-2 microg/mL). Compounds 10a, 10c, 10e and 10f displayed activity against linezolid resistant Gram-positive organisms (MIC=2-4 microg/mL). Selected oxazolidinones were evaluated for in vivo efficacy against a mouse systemic infection model. 相似文献
