Opportunities to investigate selection in free-living species during a naturally occurring epidemic are rare; however, we assessed innate immunocompetence in Florida scrub-jays before the population suffered the greatest over-winter mortality in 20 years of study. Propitiously, three months prior to the epidemic, we had sampled a number of male breeders to evaluate a suite of physiological measures that are commonly used to estimate the overall health-state of an individual. There was a significant, positive selection gradient for both Escherichia coli bacterial killing capability and body condition, suggesting that directional selection had occurred upon each of these traits during the disease epidemic. 相似文献

We compute the singular value decomposition of the radial distribution function for hard sphere, and square well solutions. We find that decomposes into a small set of basis vectors allowing for an extremely accurate representation at all interpolated densities and potential strengths. In addition, we find that the coefficient vectors describing the magnitude of each basis vector are well described by a low-order polynomial. Endosomal preparations from human osteosarcoma cells and from fibroblasts contain 51,000- and 26,000-Mr proteins which bind a small dermatan sulphate proteoglycan after SDS/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis and Western blotting. Binding can be inhibited by unlabelled proteoglycan core protein. The proteins co-precipitate with a proteoglycan core protein-antibody complex. Scatchard analysis of immobilized endosomal proteins yielded a KD of about 37 nM for the proteoglycan. In intact cells proteins of the same size can be found. They are sensitive to trypsinization. A 51,000-Mr protein is the predominant membrane protein with strong binding to immobilized dermatan sulphate proteoglycan. There are additional proteoglycan-binding proteins with Mr values of around 30,000 and 14,000 which are insensitive to trypsin treatment. In contrast with the 51,000- and 26,000-Mr proteins, they resist deoxycholate/Triton X-100 extraction several days after subcultivation. 相似文献

Abstract By light and scanning electron microscopy it is shown that a strain of Verticillium psalliotae , originally isolated from pustules of the soybean rust in Thailand, is able to infect uredospores of this rust fungus. In most cases appressoria-like structures were formed at the infection sites. However, only a part of the spores were infected. Most spores appeared heavily damaged without any visible mycelium inside. This indicates that growth of Verticillium psalliotae on uredospores of the soybean rust is probably mainly based on the production of lytic enzymes. 相似文献

Summary We evaluated three methods for the analysis of functional response data by asking whether a given method could discriminate among functional responses and whether it could accurately identify regions of positive density-dependent predation. We evaluated comparative curve fitting with foraging models, linear least-squares analysis using the angular transformation, and logit analysis. Using data from nature and simulations, we found that the analyses of predation rates with the angular transformation and logit analysis were best at consistently determining the true functional response, i.e. the model used to generate simulated data. These methods also produced the most accurate estimates of the true regions of density dependence. Of these two methods, functional response data best fulfill the assumptions of logit analysis. Angularly transformed predation rates only approximate the assumptions of linear leastsquares analysis for predation rates between 0.1 and 0.9. Lack-of-fit statistics can reveal inadequate fit of a model to a data set where simple regression statistics might erroneously suggest a good match. 相似文献

The selective type A and B cholecystokinin (CCK) receptor antagonists L364,718 and L365,260 were used to identify the receptor subtype that mediates the satiety effect of endogenous CCK. Male rats (n = 12–13/group), fed ground rat chow ad lib, received L364,718 (0, 1, 10, 100, or 1000 μg/kg IP) or L365,260 (0, 0.1, 1, 10, 100, 1000, or 10,000 μg/kg IP) 2 h after lights off, and food intake was measured 1.5, 3.5, and 5.5 h later. L364,718 significantly stimulated 1.5-h food intake by more than 40% at 10 μg/kg and higher doses; cumulative intake at 3.5 and 5.5 h remained elevated by about 20% at 1000 and 100 μg/kg of L364,718, respectively. In contrast, L365,260 had no significant stimulatory effect on feeding at any dose. The potency of L365,260 for antagonizing gastrin-stimulated gastric acid secretion was examined in unanesthetized rats. Male rats (n = 14), prepared with gastric and jugular vein cannulas, received doubling doses of gastrin (G-17I) (0.16–5 nmol/kg/h IV), each dose for 30 min, and gastric juice was collected for each 30-min period. G-17I stimulated gastric acid output dose dependently; the minimal effective dose was 0.16 nmol/kg/h, while maximal output (5-fold above basal) occurred at 5 nmol/kg/h. L365,260 (0, 1, 10, 100, 1000, or 10,000 μg/kg IV), administered 30 min before continuous infusion of G-17I (1.25 or 5 nmol/kg/h), significantly inhibited acid output only at 10,000 μg/kg; cumulative 60-min output was decreased by 60%. These results suggest that CCK acts at CCK-A receptors to produce satiety during the dark period in ad lib-feeding rats. 相似文献

Four different sets of proteoliposomes were prepared from F0, subunit c, a complex of subunits a and c (ac complex) and an ac complex supplemented with subunit b. Only liposomes containing intact F0 or all subunits of F0 were active in proton translocation and F1 binding [Schneider, E. and Altendorf, K. (1985) EMBO J. 4, 515-518]. The conformation of subunit c in the different preparations was analyzed by labelling the proteoliposomes with the hydrophobic photoactivatable reagent 3-(trifluoromethyl)-3-(m-[125I]iodophenyl)diazirine ([125I]TID). Subsequent isolation and Edman degradation of this polypeptide revealed distinct radioactive labelling patterns over the entire amino acid sequence. In the F0 complex and in the ac complex subunit c retains a labelling pattern which is related to that found in TID-labelled membrane vesicles of Escherichia coli [Hoppe et al. (1984) Biochemistry 23, 5610-5616]. In the absence of subunit a, considerably more and different amino acid residues of subunit c are modified. The labelling data are discussed in relation to structural aspects of F0 and functional properties of proteoliposomes reconstituted with F0 or individual subunits. 相似文献

Ethanol-induced gastric mucosal damage is characterized by microcirculatory changes such as statis and plasma leakage. Sluggish blood flow and statis have also been observed after administration of exogenous leukotriene (LT) C4. The effect of ethanol on the release of LTC4 from rat gastric mucosa was therefore investigated. It was found that intragastric instillation of ethanol increases gastric mucosal release of LTC4 in a dose- and time-dependent manner parallel to the production of gastric lesions. The lipoxugenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) and the anti-ulcer drug carbenoxolone (CX) inhibited mucosal release of LTC4 and simultaneously protected against gastric damage caused by ethanol. It is concluded that increased formation of LTC4 and /or other 5-lipoxygenase-derived products of arachidonate metabolism may be involved in ethanol-induced gastric damage. Furthermore, inhibition of the 5-lipoxygenase pathway may be an important mechanism of action of gastric protective drugs. 相似文献
