Species composition, age distribution, and their relationship with land height from the datum line (LH) of the Sonneratia caseolaris stand, which grows in the Lam River estuary in Vietnam, were surveyed to obtain fundamental knowledge that aimed at contributing to mangrove restoration. The data gathered on the sandbar consists of three mangrove species and one mangrove associate species, with one non-mangrove species, and were divided into three communities. In terms of the age distribution of the S. caseolaris–Aegiceras corniculatum community, the tree-phase densities for both species are lower than those exhibited by younger phases. In its succession, the seedlings of S. caseolaris and A. corniculatum are primarily recruited at the mean tide level (MWL) in the early stages. Then, A. corniculatum expands to the lower tide zone primarily on mud flat bare land. For both species, full irradiance on the bare land in the low tide zone below MWL is crucial for growth, but S. caseolaris, which propagates by releasing small seeds, can barely survive in the low tide zone because its seeds are easily flushed away. In contrast, A. corniculatum, which propagates using crypto-viviparous seedlings, has a higher survival rate in the low tide zone. As a result, the LH of seedlings of A. corniculatum distribution is significantly lower than that of the distribution of S. caseolaris trees (p?<?0.05). It is important to provide appropriate environmental conditions for forest restoration in order to promote succession. The findings from the current study on population dynamics related to LH and tidal conditions are expected to be applied to platforms for S. caseolaris stands and mangrove restoration.

A total of 585 repeat-breeder dairy cows was used to study the effect of GnRH treatment, either at or prior to insemination, on the pregnancy rate. The cows were divided into 6 treatment groups. Cows in Group 1 (n = 142) were observed in estrus, and 11 +/- 0.42 hours (mean +/- SEM) later they were given 100 ug, i.m. gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and were inseminated. Cows in Group 2 (n = 139) were observed in estrus and were inseminated 11.4 +/- 0.43 hours later. Cows in Group 3 (n = 33) were monitored for estrus with an activated heatmount detector but were not observed in estrus; they were inseminated 1.5 +/- 0.87 hours later and were given 100 ug, i.m. GnRH. Cows in Group 4 (n = 35) were not observed in estrus, but they did activate the heatmount detector and were inseminated 2.2 +/- 0.87 hours later. Cows in Group 5 (n = 107) were observed in estrus, given 100 ug, i.m. GnRH 2.0 +/- 0.40 hours later, and were inseminated 9 +/- 0.60 hours after GnRH treatment. Cows in Group 6 (n = 129) were observed in estrus and were inseminated 10 +/- 0.50 hours later. Pregnancy rates were analyzed by Chi-square. Interactions between pregnancy rate, treatment and time of insemination were evaluated using ANOVA and LSM (P < 0.05). There was no effect on pregnancy rate when GnRH was given at or prior to insemination. Cows inseminated on the basis of observed estrus had a higher pregnancy rate (P < 0.05) than cows inseminated on the observation of an activated heatmount detector. From the results of this study, it is concluded that treatment with GnRH at or prior to insemination did not improve the pregnancy rate of repeat-breeder dairy cows.  相似文献

Background

Despite evidence supporting the importance of breastfeeding to child health, breastfeeding practices remain suboptimal in Vietnam. There is currently little evidence on the importance of breastfeeding in the prevention of morbidity during infancy in Vietnam. In order to provide country specific data for policy makers to support breastfeeding friendly policies and programs, analysis was undertaken on a cross-sectional dataset to investigate the association between breastfeeding practices and prevalence of diarrhea and acute respiratory infection (ARI) among infants aged 0–5 months.

Methods

Data on socio-demographic characteristics, infant feeding practices and prevalence of diarrhea and ARI were obtained from 6,068 mother-child dyads in 11 provinces of Vietnam in 2011. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the associations between breastfeeding practices and child illnesses.

Results

On average, the prevalence of diarrhea and ARI among infants 0–5 months was 5.3% and 24.5%, respectively. Though half of all infants were breastfed within one hour of birth, 73.3% were given prelacteal foods in the first three days after birth. Only 20.2% of children 0–5 months old were exclusively breastfed, while 32.4% were predominantly breastfed and 47.4% partially breastfed. After adjusting for confounders, early initiation of breastfeeding was associated with lower prevalence of diarrhea [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)?=?0.74 (95% CI 0.58, 0.93)], while prelacteal feeding was associated with higher prevalence [AOR?=?1.53 (95% CI 1.15, 2.03)]. Compared to infants who were exclusively breastfed, infants who were predominantly [AOR?=?1.52 (95% CI 1.05, 2.21)] or partially breastfed [AOR?=?1.55 (95% CI 1.07, 2.24)] were more likely to have diarrhea. Prelacteal feeding [AOR?=?1.16 (95% CI 1.01, 1.33)] and partial breastfeeding [AOR relative to exclusive breastfeeding?=?1.24 (95% CI 1.03, 1.48)] were associated with higher prevalence of ARI. While the protective effects of exclusive breastfeeding against diarrhea declined with child age, this effect for ARI appears to have remained constant.

Conclusions

Early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding protects against diarrhea and ARI. Results confirm that interventions to improve early and exclusive breastfeeding would contribute to improving child health and nutrition in Vietnam.

Background  

Dunaliella salina Teodoresco, a unicellular, halophilic green alga belonging to the Chlorophyceae, is among the most industrially important microalgae. This is because D. salina can produce massive amounts of β-carotene, which can be collected for commercial purposes, and because of its potential as a feedstock for biofuels production. Although the biochemistry and physiology of D. salina have been studied in great detail, virtually nothing is known about the genomes it carries, especially those within its mitochondrion and plastid. This study presents the complete mitochondrial and plastid genome sequences of D. salina and compares them with those of the model green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Volvox carteri.  相似文献

Linkage studies have identified a locus on chromosome 3 as reading disabilities (RD) and speech and sound disorder (SSD) susceptibility region, with both RD and SSD sharing similar phonological processing and phonological memory difficulties. One gene in this region, roundabout homolog 1 (ROBO1), has been indicated as a RD candidate and has shown significant association with measures of phonological memory in a population‐based sample. In this study, we conducted a family‐based association analysis using two independent samples collected in Toronto and Calgary, Canada. Using the two samples, we tested for association between ROBO1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and RD, along with quantitative measures for reading, spelling and phonological memory. One SNP, rs331142, which was selected based on its correlation with ROBO1 expression in brain tissue, was found to be significantly associated with RD in the Toronto sample with over transmission of the minor C allele (P = 0.001), correlated with low expression. This SNP is located ~200 bp from a putative enhancer and results for a marker within the enhancer, rs12495133, showed evidence for association with the same allele in both the Toronto and Calgary samples (P = 0.005 and P = 0.007). These results support previous associations between ROBO1 and RD, as well as correlation with low gene expression, suggesting a possible mechanism of risk conferred by this gene.  相似文献

The asebia (ab) mutation in the mouse is an autosomal recessive trait with hypoplastic sebaceous glands. As a first step toward cloning the ab gene, we report here the genetic mapping of the ab locus with respect to Chromosome 19 microsatellite markers. 644 backcross progeny were generated by mating (CAST/EiJ × DBA/1LacJ-ab2J/ab2J) F1 heterozygous females and parental ab2J/ab2J mutant males. Our results located the ab gene to an interval of 1.6 cM on mouse Chromosome 19 defined by flanking markers D19Mit11 and D19Mit53/D19Mit27, and identified a tightly linked polymorphic marker, D19Mit67, that co-segregates with the mutation in the backcross progeny examined. This places ab locus 4 cM distal to its present position as indicated in Mouse Genome Database at The Jackson Laboratory. We have also mapped a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) contig in this locus interval which suggests the ab interval to be less than one megabase of DNA.  相似文献

Dunaliella is currently drawing worldwide attention as an alternative source of nutraceuticals. Commercially, β-carotene making up over 10 % of Dunaliella biomass is generating the most interest. These compounds, because of their non-toxic properties, have found applications in the food, drug and cosmetic industry. The β-carotene content of Dunaliella cells, however, depends heavily on the growth conditions and especially on the availability of nutrients, salinity, irradiance and temperature in the growth medium. A chemically well defined medium is usually required, which significantly contributes to the cost of pigment production; hence a desire for low cost marine media. The present study aimed at evaluating the suitability of six different media, especially exploiting local potential resources, for the mass production of Dunaliella salina DCCBC15 as functional food and medicine. The efficacy of a new selected low-cost enriched natural seawater medium (MD4), supplemented with industrial N–P–K fertilizer, was investigated with respect to biomass production, chlorophyll, antioxidant capacity, and total carotene by Dunaliella though culture conditions were not optimized yet. This new medium (MD4) appears extremely promising, since it affords a higher production of Dunaliella biomass and pigments compared with the control, a common artificial medium (MD1), while allowing a substantial reduction in the production costs. The medium is also recommended for culturing other marine algae.  相似文献
