Conjugal transfer and autonomous replication of some episomes occurred normally in a recombination-deficient (Rec) mutant of Escherichia coli K-12. Transduction with phage Plbt of an R factor also occurred normally in this Rec mutant, but complete or abortive transduction with Plbt of chromosomal genes did not occur. In contrast, transduction of galactose genes by phage λdg occurred in the Rec bacteria as frequently as in the Rec+ strain. It was shown that phage Plbt does not grow at all on the Rec–bacteria. Recombination between two different R factors, two mutants of phage λ and two mutants of phage T4 occurred normally in the Rec bacteria, but did not give a Rec+ phenotype to the host bacteria. Colicinogenic factor I made the Rec host bacteria more resistant to ultraviolet light but the colicinogenic strain was still infertile in the crosses with the Hfr srains of E. coli K-12.  相似文献

Lipid trafficking is essential for biogenesis and maintenance of eukaryotic organelles. In this issue of The EMBO Journal, Saita et al ( 2018 ) revealed that proteolytic processing by the rhomboid protease PARL in the mitochondrial inner membrane facilitates partitioning of START domain‐containing protein STARD7 to the cytosol and mitochondrial intermembrane space. STARD7 in the mitochondrial intermembrane space functions as a lipid transfer protein to shuttle phosphatidylcholine from the outer membrane to the inner membrane.  相似文献

This study examines the relations between the local variations in vegetation and topography using logistic regression (LR) and GIS in a snowy basin in the Ohu Mountains of northeastern Japan. The spatial distribution of seven vegetation classes interpreted from aerial photographs—(a) large-sparse crown beech forest, (b) middle-dense crown beech forest, (c) dwarf beech scrub, (d) dwarf bamboo thicket, (e) Japanese white pine forest, (f) snow-avalanche scrub or meadow, and (g) riparian forest—was analyzed with terrain parameters derived from a 10 m digital elevation model (10 m DEM) and parameters of landslide distribution and surface geology. While large-sparse crown beech forests dominate the slopes, smaller crown beech forests or scrubs are often found on the west-facing (i.e., windward side) upper parts of slopes and crests. On the contrary, snow-avalanche scrubs or meadows are found on the leeward side of steep slopes and concave plan curvatures. Dwarf bamboo thickets are often found on east-facing (i.e., leeward side) gently sloping crests, where the snow remains until summer. Japanese white pine forests respond positively to sharp ridges, whereas riparian forests show a positive response to the gently sloping lower parts of slopes and bottomlands at low elevation. The heterogeneous vegetation distribution in the basin indicates differences in site conditions (e.g., soil–water conditions), and the existence of various disturbance regimes induced by the strong winter monsoon with heavy snowfall, snow movements (e.g., avalanches), and temporal differences in snowmelt on different topographies. The estimated vegetation maps could be used for forest management and restoration.

Site-specific phosphorylation of intermediate filament (IF) proteins on serine and threonine residues leads to alteration of the filament structure, in vitro and in vivo. Protein kinases involved in cell signaling and those activated in mitosis dynamically control spatial and temporal organization of intracellular IF phosphorylation. Thus, IF phosphorylation appears to be one of the most predominant strategies in coordinating intracellular organization of the IF network.  相似文献
