In birds with bi-parental care, the provisioning link between prey capture and delivery to dependent offspring is regarded as often symmetric between the mates. However, in raptors, the larger female usually broods and feeds the nestlings, while the smaller male provides food for the family, assisted by the female in the latter part of the nestling period, if at all. Prey items are relatively large and often impossible for nestlings to handle without extended maternal assistance. We video-recorded prey delivery and handling in nests of a raptor with a wide diet, the Eurasian kestrel Falco tinnunculus, and simultaneously observed prey transfer from male to female outside the nest. The male selectively allocated larger items, in particular birds and larger mammals, to the female for further processing and feeding of nestlings, and smaller items, in particular lizards and smaller mammals, directly to the nestlings for unassisted feeding. Hence, from the video, the female appeared to have captured larger prey than the male, while in reality no difference existed. The female’s size-biased interception of the male’s prey provisioning line would maximize the male’s foraging time, and maximize the female’s control of the allocation of food between her own need and that of the offspring. The male would maximize his control of food allocation by capturing smaller prey. This conflict would select for larger dominant females and smaller energy-efficient males, and induce stronger selection the longer the female depends on the male for self-feeding, as a proportion of the offspring dependence period.  相似文献

Iso-octyl chain-hydroxylated oxysterols were determined in attomoles per 10,000 cells concentrations in 10,000–80,000 cultured pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells, using a sensitive, highly automated nano-LC-ESI-MS-based method. Identified oxysterols included 24S hydroxycholesterol (24S-OHC), 25 hydroxycholesterol (25-OHC), and 27 hydroxycholesterol (27-OHC), while 20S hydroxycholesterol and 22S hydroxycholesterol were not detected. Lower mass limit of quantification was 23 fg (65 amol) for 25-OHC and 27-OHC (100 times lower than our previous method) and 54 fg (135 amol) for 24S-OHC, after derivatization into Girard T hydrazones and online sample cleanup using simplified and robust automatic filtration and filter back flushing solid phase extraction LC/MS/MS. The instrument configuration was easily installed using a commercial nano-LC/MS system. Recoveries in spiked sample were 96, 97, and 77% for 24S-OHC, 25-OHC, and 27-OHC, with within- and between-day repeatabilities of 1–21% and 2–20% relative SD, respectively. The study demonstrates the potential of nano-LC in lipidomics/sterolomics.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation is a growing problem worldwide. Particularly in river systems, numerous dams and weirs hamper the movement of a wide variety of species. With the aim to preserve connectivity for fish, many barriers in river systems are equipped with fishways (also called fish passages or fish ladders). However, few fishways provide full connectivity. Here we hypothesized that restricted seasonal opening times of fishways can importantly reduce their effectiveness by interfering with the timing of fish migration, for both spring‐ and autumn‐spawning species. We empirically tested our hypothesis, and discuss the possible eco‐evolutionary consequences of affected migration timing. We analyzed movements of two salmonid fishes, spring‐spawning European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) and autumn‐spawning brown trout (Salmo trutta), in Norway's two largest river systems. We compared their timing of upstream passage through four fishways collected over 28 years with the timing of fish movements in unfragmented river sections as monitored by radiotelemetry. Confirming our hypothesis, late opening of fishways delayed the migration of European grayling in spring, and early closure of fishways blocked migration for brown trout on their way to spawning locations during late autumn. We show in a theoretical framework how restricted opening times of fishways can induce shifts from migratory to resident behavior in potamodromous partial migration systems, and propose that this can induce density‐dependent effects among fish accumulating in lower regions of rivers. Hence, fragmentation may not only directly affect the migratory individuals in the population, but may also have effects that cascade downstream and alter circumstances for resident fish. Fishway functionality is inadequate if there is a mismatch between natural fish movements and fishway opening times in the same river system, with ecological and possibly evolutionary consequences for fish populations.  相似文献

The effect of serum, phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (TPA), and forskolin on the activity Na+/H+ antiport and the Na(+)-coupled and Na(+)-independent Cl-/HCO3- antiport was studied in Vero cells by measuring 22Na+ and 36Cl- fluxes and changes in cytosolic pH (pHi). The Na(+)-independent Cl-/HCO3- antiport, which acts as an acidifying mechanism, is strongly pH-sensitive. In serum-starved cells it is activated at alkaline cytosolic pH, with a half-maximal activity at pHi approximately 7.20. Incubation with serum increased the activity of the Na(+)-independent Cl-/HCO3- antiport at pHi values from 6.8 to 7.2. Thus serum appeared to alter the pHi sensitivity of this antiporter such that the threshold value for activation of the antiport was shifted to a more acidic value. Na+/H+ antiport was somewhat stimulated initially by addition of serum, but further incubation with serum (greater than 45 min) decreased its activity. The activity of the Na(+)-coupled Cl-/HCO3- antiport, which is the major alkalinizing antiport in Vero cells, was not altered by short-term incubation with serum (less than 10 min) but decreased after prolonged incubation (greater than 45 min). Our findings with TPA and forskolin indicate that the effect of serum is partly mediated by the protein kinase C pathway, whereas the cyclic adenosine monophosphate pathway does not appear to play an important role. The net effect of serum on the pHi-regulating antiports was a slight decrease in intracellular pH.  相似文献

Synopsis Mercury concentration in axial muscle of brown trout, Salmo trutta, whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus, Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, smelt, Osmerus eperlanus and pike, Esox lucius, were studied in Lake Tyrifjorden during 1978–1982. Our data demonstrate that older and bigger fish on an average have higher mercury concentration than smaller and younger. Further, complex life histories as in brown trout influence the pattern of mercury accumulation. During young stages accumulation in brown trout is moderate, while accumulation in older stages is highly correlated to lake residency time. Based on our data we suggest the following requirements for a test organism and the collecting procedure; (1) life history should be simple with small sexual differences, (2) ageing should be easy and reliable, and (3) large representative samples should be easily obtained during (4) a fixed biological period i.e. the spawning period. We consider smelt as an appropriate test organism based on these criteria.  相似文献

Abundance, species composition and viability of benthic resting eggs of calanoid copepods were investigated in the sediments of seven Norwegian enclosed pond systems used in mariculture as well as in the sediments of the nearby open sea. The ponds represented different types of morphometry and zooplankton communities and were located from approximately 60 to 70 °N. Differences in environmental conditions in deep water also typical with anoxia and the presence of hydrogen sulphide at most of the localities. The lowest and highest egg densities in the enclosures were 7.5 ± 6.4 × 104 and 5.5 ± 2.5 × 106 m-2, respectively, higher than in the sediments of the nearby open sea. Highest densities were found at larger or median depths. Altogether, egg densities higher than 103 m-2 were found of only four calanoid species; Eurytemora affinis, Acartia teclae, Acartia clausi, Temora longicornis. Hatching success was variable (0–92%), and no significant correlation to the presence of anoxia and hydrogen sulphide was found. This high hatching success was achieved with eggs exposed to hydrogen sulphide for several months. The recruitment potential to the plankton of nauplii was estimated from 4.8 to 1682 nauplii l-1 for the different localities. The results showed that resting egg production is a common life history characteristic of some neritic calanoid species in Norwegian waters. In addition to copepod eggs, low densities (< 103 m-2) of eggs from rotifers and cladocerans were found in most of the localities.  相似文献

Mycoplasma mycoides contains a signal-recognition particle (SRP) composed of an RNA molecule and an SRP54 homologue (Ffh). We have now identified a mycoplasma homologue to the α subunit of the mammalian SRP receptor and Escherichia coli FtsY. The protein (MmFtsY) was expressed in E. coli and purified to homogeneity. MmFtsY has a weak intrinsic GTPase activity but GTP hydrolysis was markedly stimulated when it was combined with mycoplasma Ffh (MmFfh) and SRP RNA. Also, in the absence of SRP RNA GTPase activity was significantly enhanced. Furthermore, GTP hydrolysis was stimulated when MmFtsY was combined with the N-terminal GTPase domain (N+G) of MmFfh. These findings indicate that basic features of the GTPase activation mechanism are independent of the C-terminal M domain of the MmFfh protein. We propose that the activation is mediated to a large extent by contacts between the GTPase domains of the mycoplasma Ffh and FtsY proteins and that the contribution of the M domain and SRP RNA in the activation mechanism is mainly for modifying the conformation of the MmFfh GTPase domain.  相似文献
