Habitat quality is generally thought to affect breeding success. We tested this effect comparing differences in clutch size and reproductive success between citril finch Serinus citrinella sub-populations closely located (<5 km) but differing in habitat quality, within the Port del Comte mountain, in the Catalonian Pre-Pyrenees. We found that birds in the low quality area (Bofia) showed significantly lower hatching, breeding and nesting success than finches in the high quality area (Vansa). These differences in reproductive success fit well with recently found differences in citril finch body mass, fat score, diet, survival rate and speed of moult between these two localities.  相似文献

Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato strain DC3000 (PtoDC3000) is one of the most intensively studied bacterial plant pathogens today. Here we report a thorough investigation into PtoDC3000 and close relatives isolated from Antirrhinum majus (snapdragon), Apium graveolens (celery), and Solanaceae and Brassicaceae species. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was used to resolve the precise phylogenetic relationship between isolates and to determine the importance of recombination in their evolution. MLST data were correlated with an analysis of the locus coding for the type III secreted (T3S) effector AvrPto1 to investigate the role of recombination in the evolution of effector repertoires. Host range tests were performed to determine if closely related isolates from different plants have different host ranges. It was found that PtoDC3000 is located in the same phylogenetic cluster as isolates from several Brassicaceae and Solanaceae species and that these isolates have a relatively wide host range that includes tomato, Arabidopsis thaliana, and cauliflower. All other analyzed tomato isolates from three different continents form a distinct cluster and are pathogenic only on tomato. Therefore, PtoDC3000 is a very unusual tomato isolate. Several recombination breakpoints were detected within sequenced gene fragments, and population genetic tests indicate that recombination contributed more than mutation to the variation between isolates. Moreover, recombination may play an important role in the reassortment of T3S effectors between strains. The data are finally discussed from a taxonomic standpoint, and P. syringae pv. tomato is proposed to be divided into two pathovars.  相似文献

Using immunoblotting and immunofluorescent microscopy, we showed the presence in Xenopus laevis oocytes of two prosomal proteins (27 and 31-33 kDa) and studied their distribution during oogenesis. In the ooplasm, both proteins are detected in prosomal clusters of various size. During previtellogenesis, prosomal proteins are diffusely distributed in the nucleoplasm and form evenly distributed clusters in the cytoplasm. During oocyte growth, prosomal proteins disappear from the nucleus and form animal-vegetal and cortical gradients in the cytoplasm. In the course of oocyte maturation prosomal clusters become smaller. After artificial activation of the egg, the dorso-ventral gradient of distribution of prosomal proteins is observed. Double immunohistochemical labeling revealed morphological association between prosomal clusters and fibril-like structures of the oocyte containing actin and myosin. The latter are then replaced by diffusely distributed actin and myosin. Thus, correlation is observed between localization of the acto-myosin complex of the oocyte and that of prosomal proteins.  相似文献

Behavioural studies have led to the perception that lekking species experience a high male reproductive skew as a consequence of females’ selective mate choice. In addition, observations suggest that females copulate only once and therefore polyandry seems unlikely as females are supposed to choose the best male available. In order to analyse the mating strategy of the Houbara bustard, an endangered lekking species under reinforcement in eastern Morocco, we used microsatellite data to perform paternity analyses. None of our observations followed common expectations under a lek mating system: we found no male reproductive skew suggesting no apparent selective female mate choice and no apparent male benefit from lekking. In contrast, a high level of polyandry (60 % of the nests) was recorded suggesting that sperm competition may operate. In addition, we present another case of conspecific brood parasitism in a lekking species and this was an unexpected alternative strategy for a species presenting high parental cost and low fecundity. The increasing number of studies contradicting common assumptions on lekking species suggests that alternative breeding strategies such as males pursuing an off‐lek mating strategy, female polyandry and even conspecific brood parasitism might be more widespread in lekking species than previously thought.  相似文献

Peroxisomes are organelles bounded by a single membrane that can be found in all major groups of eukaryotes. A single evolutionary origin of this cellular compartment is supported by the presence, in diverse organisms, of a common set of proteins implicated in peroxisome biogenesis and maintenance. Their enzymatic content, however, can vary substantially across species, indicating a high level of evolutionary plasticity. Proteomic analyses have greatly expanded our knowledge on peroxisomes in some model organisms, including plants, mammals and yeasts. However, we still have a limited knowledge about the distribution and functionalities of peroxisomes in the vast majority of groups of microbial eukaryotes. Here, I review recent advances in our understanding of peroxisome diversity and evolution, with a special emphasis on peroxisomes in microbial eukaryotes.  相似文献

The cyclic alternating pattern (CAP), that is, cyclic variation of brain activity within non-REM sleep stages, is related to sleep instability and preservation, as well as consolidation of learning. Unlike the well-known electrical activity of CAP, its cerebral hemodynamic counterpart has not been assessed in healthy subjects so far. We recorded scalp and cortical hemodynamics with near-infrared spectroscopy on the forehead and systemic hemodynamics (heart rate and amplitude of the photoplethysmograph) with a finger pulse oximeter during 23 nights in 11 subjects. Electrical CAP activity was recorded with a polysomnogram. CAP was related to changes in scalp, cortical, and systemic hemodynamic signals that resembled the ones seen in arousal. Due to their repetitive nature, CAP sequences manifested as low- and very-low-frequency oscillations in the hemodynamic signals. The subtype A3+B showed the strongest hemodynamic changes. A transient hypoxia occurred during CAP cycles, suggesting that an increased CAP rate, especially with the subtype A3+B, which may result from diseases or fragmented sleep, might have an adverse effect on the cerebral vasculature.  相似文献

Dietary betaine may reduce carcass fat in growing pigs. We explored the effects of betaine on short-term growth and in vivo and in vitro fatty acid oxidation. Pigs were housed in metabolism crates and fed diets containing either 0% (control), 0.125% or 0.5% betaine at 80% of ad libitum energy intake. Fatty acid oxidation was measured during intravenous infusions of 1-(13)C-palmitate and in hepatocytes incubated in the presence or absence of betaine and carnitine. CO2 and palmitate isotopic enrichments were determined by mass spectrometry. Pigs consuming 0.125% and 0.5% betaine for at least 9 days had growth rates that were 38% and 12% greater than controls, respectively. Feed efficiency was also improved with betaine. Fasting increased palmitate oxidation rates 7-8-fold (P < 0.01), but betaine had no effect in either the fed or fasted state (P > 0.1). For hepatocytes, carnitine but not betaine enhanced palmitate oxidation. This response suggests that previously observed reduction in adipose accretion must be via a mechanism other than oxidation. Betaine had no effect on plasma non-esterified fatty acids or urea nitrogen. Under the confinement conditions in this study, dietary betaine improved animal growth responses, but it had no apparent effect on either whole body or hepatic fatty acid oxidation.  相似文献

Multiple types of voltage-activated Ca(2+) channels (T, L, N, P, Q, R type) coordinate Ca(2+)-dependent processes in neurons and neuroendocrine cells. Expressional and functional data have suggested a role for Ca(v)2.3 Ca(2+) channels in endocrine processes. To verify its role in vivo, Ca(v)2.3(-/-) mutant mice were generated, thus deficient in alpha 1E/R-type Ca(2+) channel. Intraperitoneal injection of D-glucose showed that glucose tolerance was markedly reduced, and insulin release into plasma was impaired in Ca(v)2.3-deficient mice. In isolated islets of Langerhans from these animals, no glucose-induced insulin release was detected. Further, in stressed Ca(v)2.3-deficient mice, the rate of glucose release into the blood was only 29% of that observed for wild-type animals. Thus, the deletion of Ca(v)2.3 causes deficits not only in insulin release but also in stress-induced hyperglycemia. The complex phenotype of Ca(v)2.3-deficient mice has dual components related to endocrine and neurological defects. The present findings provide direct evidence of a functional role for the Ca(v)2.3 subunit in hormone secretion and glucose homeostasis.  相似文献
