Habitat associations of 40 bird species were analysed using data from a survey of 12892 garden sites throughout the United Kingdom between 1995 and 2002. Gradients in 20 garden habitat variables and 25 variables describing the surrounding local habitat were derived from Detrended Correspondence Analysis. The main garden axis explained 13.3% of variation in the data and described a gradient from sites containing and bounded by high levels of vegetation cover to open sites bounded by walls and fences. The main local axis explained 29.9% of variation in the data and described a gradient from rural to urban habitats. Higher probability of occurrence was detected in larger sites in 25 species and in smaller sites in four (urban-associated) species. Many species (22 out of 40) were significantly associated with the local gradient: seven species showed the highest probability of occurrence in sites within more urbanised habitats. Other species were most likely to occur in sites within rural or suburban habitats. Only five species showed a significant association with garden habitat gradient, four of these being most likely to occur in sites with highest vegetation cover. These associations were similar when controlling for garden size and for food provision in gardens. The results imply that the likelihood of many species occurring in gardens is dependent on the surrounding local habitat rather than the garden habitat. However, survey participants were likely to have "bird-friendly" gardens which may have reduced the variation in garden habitat across the sample. An assessment of the representativeness of survey sites is needed to further understand habitat associations of garden birds.  相似文献

This study compares the binding of a human recombinant alpha-interferon to peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with insulin dependent diabetes (IDDM) mellitus and control subjects. Diurnal and longer term of variation, feeding, fasting and haemoglobin glycosylation were examinated for their influence on interferon binding to PBMC. No gross differences in binding were demonstrated, in particular no effect of glucose levels was seen on the binding of interferon alpha-2 to PBMC.  相似文献

A series of bisbiotinyl diamines was synthesized with between 9 and 25 bonds between the carboxyl groups of the two biotin residues. It was found that only one of the two biotin residues could combine with avidin when there were fewer than 12 bonds between the biotin residues. Compounds with longer chains behaved in a bifunctional manner and gave rise to linear polymers of avidin, which were characterized by electron microscopy and by gel filtration. The polymers formed with the shorter-chain reagents (12, 13 or 14 bonds) were relatively unstable and could be depolymerized by weakly bound analogues of biotin. The polymers of longer-chain reagents were not depolymerized under these conditions and were only slowly affected by added biotin. When the chain length of the reagent reached 23 bonds the polymers became much shorter, suggesting that the reagent was now able to link two subunits within the same avidin molecule. From the morphology of the polymers it could be concluded that the four subunits of the avidin molecules were arranged with 222 symmetry and that they were grouped in two pairs at opposite ends of the short axis of the molecule whose dimensions were 55Ax55Ax41A.  相似文献

There is an overdue and urgent need to establish patterns of migratory connectivity linking breeding grounds, stopover sites, and wintering grounds of migratory birds. Such information allows more effective application of conservation efforts by applying focused actions along movement trajectories at the population level. Stable isotope methods, especially those using stable hydrogen isotope abundance in feathers (δ2Hf) combined with Bayesian assignment techniques incorporating prior information such as relative abundance of breeding birds, now provide a fast and reliable means of establishing migratory connectivity, especially for Neotropical migrants that breed in North America and molt prior to fall migration. Here we demonstrate how opportunistic sampling of feathers of 30 species of wintering birds in Cuba, Venezuela, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, regions that have typically been poorly sampled for estimating migratory connectivity, can be assigned to breeding areas in North America through both advanced spatial assignment to probability surfaces and through simpler map lookup approaches. Incorporating relative abundance information from the North American Breeding Bird Survey in our Bayesian assignment models generally resulted in a reduction in potential assignment areas on breeding grounds. However, additional tools to constrain longitude such as DNA markers or other isotopes would be desirable for establishing breeding or molt origins of species with broad longitudinal distributions. The isotope approach could act as a rapid means of establishing basic patterns of migratory connectivity across numerous species and populations. We propose a large‐scale coordinated sampling effort on the wintering grounds to establish an isotopic atlas of migratory connectivity for North American Neotropical migrants and suggest that isotopic variance be considered as a valuable metric to quantify migratory connectivity. This initiative could then act as a strategic template to guide further efforts involving stable isotopes, light‐sensitive geolocators, and other technologies.  相似文献
