An efficient synthesis of modified deoxyribonucleosidic building units, containing the 'ethylene-bisphosphonate nucleic acids' (EBPNAs) 1 or 2, has been developed. By means of solution-phase incorporation of 11, the oxidized form of 2, dinucleotide analogs of type 13 were prepared. The same strategy was used to incorporate 2 into the 5'-terminal position of the 12-mer homopolynucleotide methylphosphonate 14. A preliminary approach for solid-phase incorporation of the nucleosidic building block 1 into a preselected position of an oligonucleotide sequence to give 19 is presented, a reaction performed by means of a coupling strategy involving catalytic oxazaphospholidine-ring cleavage. 相似文献

Arterial embolism is responsible for the death of lots of people who suffers from heart diseases. The major risk of embolism in upper limbs is that the ruptured particles are brought into the brain, thus stimulating neurological symptoms or causing the stroke. We presented a computational model using fluid-structure interactions (FSI) to investigate the physical motion of a blood clot inside the human common carotid artery. We simulated transportation of a buoyant embolus in an unsteady flow within a finite length tube having stenosis. Effects of stenosis severity and embolus size on arterial hemodynamics were investigated. To fulfill realistic nonlinear property of a blood clot, a rubber/foam model was used. The arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation (ALE) and adaptive mesh method were used inside fluid domain to capture the large structural interfacial movements. The problem was solved by simultaneous solution of the fluid and the structure equations. Stress distribution and deformation of the clot were analyzed and hence, the regions of the embolus prone to lysis were localized. The maximum magnitude of arterial wall shear stress during embolism occurred at a short distance proximal to the throat of the stenosis. Through embolism, arterial maximum wall shear stress is more sensitive to stenosis severity than the embolus size whereas role of embolus size is more significant than the effect of stenosis severity on spatial and temporal gradients of wall shear stress downstream of the stenosis and on probability of clot lysis due to clot stresses while passing through the stenosis. 相似文献

Animals living in colonies or collectives composed of highly-related individuals often produce morphs that are physically and behaviourally specialised to perform specific tasks. Because such morphs are often sterile, their production represents a fitness cost for the colony and there should be an optimal ratio of the numbers of sterile specialists and reproductive members that may be adjustable to environmental conditions. Trematode parasites undergo asexual multiplication within their snail intermediate host, resulting in large numbers of clonal stages known as rediae or sporocysts, depending on the trematode species. In areas with high prevalences of infection, the host can be infected by multiple species, which can lead to intense competition for limited resources. Here, we describe the existence of specialised ‘mini-rediae’ in the trematode Philophthalmus sp. that are morphologically and functionally specialised for interspecific competition. Mini-rediae were observed feeding on the sporocysts of a co-occurring trematode species - Maritrema novaezealandensis. In addition, in larger snails - which are less likely to have M. novaezealandensis infections - Philophthalmus sp. produces relatively fewer mini-rediae than expected. Our findings support results from a prior study which demonstrated the existence of morphs that perform specialised functions in antagonistic interspecific interactions in trematodes, and additionally shows that the number of these morphs in each host is associated with the likelihood of encountering other species within the same host. Trematodes may thus provide interesting models for studying morphological specialisation in colonial organisms. 相似文献

A series of novel purine and pyrimidine derivatives were prepared and biologically evaluated for their in vitro anti-CDK2/cyclin A3 and antitumor activities in Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cell based assay. The novel purine derivatives 13a,b demonstrated potent inhibitor activities with IC50 values of 14 ± 9 and 13 ± 9 μM, respectively. Additionally, compound 15a showed the highest potency (IC50 = 10 ± 6 μM) in EAC cell based assay. The study evaluated the nutritional quality and investigated the heavy metals concentration in muscle tissues of five commercially important marine fish species, including brownspotted grouper (Epinephelus chlorostigma), squaretail coralgrouper (Plectropomus areolatus), black pomfret (Parastromateus niger), goldbanded jobfish (Pristipomoides multidens), and blueskin seabream (Polysteganus coeruleopunctatus) from the Red Sea, Jeddah Coast, Saudi Arabia. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in the proximate chemical composition of fish muscles in these species. The highest protein content (17.66 ± 0.58%) was achieved in blueskin seabream while the lowest (15.28 ± 0.46%) was observed in brownspotted grouper. The highest lipid content (2.97 ± 0.45%) was recorded in squaretail coralgrouper while the lowest (1.52 ± 0.26%) was observed in blueskin seabream. Heavy metal concentrations varied significantly within and between fish species under study (p < 0.05). Significant differences in the concentration of heavy metals among fish species were recorded. Results revealed that the bioaccumulation of Cr, Fe, Ni, and Cd in muscles of fish species under study was higher than the standard concentration, but that of Mn, Cu, and Pb were less than the standard concentration recommended in the EU, FAO, and WHO guidelines. In conclusion, these fish species represent a high-quality food source but is unsafe due to the level of certain minerals in their tissues. Results also indicated that the Red Sea environment is contaminated with heavy metals, which was reflected in the tissues of fishes used in this study. 相似文献

Atlantic coast in mice. Preliminary studies showed that seawater contains heavy metals from domestic, agricultural and industrial wastes. Marine bivalves concentrate these pollutants by filtration and serve as vectors in human exposure. The objective of this study was to determine the concentration of heavy metals; cadmium (Cd); chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected in two coastal sites; Jorf Lasfar (JL) (neighbouring a phosphate processing platform) and Oualidia (OL) (a vegetable growing area) located at 120 and 190 km south of Casablanca, respectively. Another objective was to test and compare the toxicity of these mussels on mice. The results indicated the presence of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, and Pb) in mussels at different concentrations, depending on the collection period. Higher concentrations were obtained at JL than at OL: for example, Cd concentrations were 80 +/- 15 to 199 +/- 28 versus 23 +/- 5 microg/g mussel dry weight, respectively. Cramming with mussel powder did not increase Cd, Cr, or Pb concentration in either liver or kidneys of treated mice. The relative kidney weights were reduced. Increased glucose urea was observed in animals' urine. Treatment with mussels from OL induced significant reduction (20%) in mice body weight, together with an increase in creatinuria. These results indicate that mussels collected from OL are more harmful than those obtained from JL are. All these mussels should not be recommended for human consumption. 相似文献

Background
There are no published data on national lifetime prevalence and treatment of mental disorders in the Arab region. Furthermore, the effect of war on first onset of disorders has not been addressed previously on a national level, especially in the Arab region. Thus, the current study aims at investigating the lifetime prevalence, treatment, age of onset of mental disorders, and their relationship to war in Lebanon.Methods and Findings
The Lebanese Evaluation of the Burden of Ailments and Needs Of the Nation study was carried out on a nationally representative sample of the Lebanese population (n = 2,857 adults). Respondents were interviewed using the fully structured WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview 3.0. Lifetime prevalence of any Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) disorder was 25.8%. Anxiety (16.7%) and mood (12.6%) were more common than impulse control (4.4%) and substance (2.2%) disorders. Only a minority of people with any mental disorder ever received professional treatment, with substantial delays (6 to 28 y) between the onset of disorders and onset of treatment. War exposure increased the risk of first onset of anxiety (odds ratio [OR] 5.92, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.5–14.1), mood (OR 3.32, 95% CI 2.0–5.6), and impulse control disorders (OR 12.72, 95% CI 4.5–35.7).Conclusions
About one-fourth of the sample (25.8%) met criteria for at least one of the DSM-IV disorders at some point in their lives. There is a substantial unmet need for early identification and treatment. Exposure to war events increases the odds of first onset of mental disorders. 相似文献110.
