Natural regeneration of vegetation is a frequent outcome of land abandonment, although the rate and diversity of such regeneration may be severely restricted by seed dispersal limitation, among other factors. In spite of this, studies aiming to quantify seed rain and test methods to enhance it, such as artificial perches, are still underrepresented in the Mediterranean. In our study, we quantified seed rain density and richness and tested the effects of artificial perches on such rain over a distance gradient on seven Mediterranean island old fields. In each of the seven sites, we positioned three sampling stations, each consisting of 1 seed trap under an artificial perch and 1 as a control on the ground, distributed at 30, 60, and 90 m from natural vegetation remnant. All traps received seeds, suggesting no overall dispersal limitation. Of the 11 seed species found, 10 were fleshy‐fruited and dispersed by vertebrates. Seed traps under perches received significantly higher seed rain of fleshy‐fruited species dispersed by birds, while ground traps received significantly more seeds of the species also dispersed by mammals, especially Rubus ulmifolius. The distance from the seed source was nonsignificant in all cases. Our study demonstrates the key role of vertebrate‐mediated seed dispersal services to overcome dispersal limitation in old fields, as well as the effective contribution of even small artificial perches in contrasting such limitation. The lack of differences over the distance gradient reveal that the upper spatial limit of dispersal limitation was not achieved.  相似文献

Here we present records of sharks obtained using baited remote underwater stereo-video systems (stereo-BRUVS) at two Brazilian oceanic islands. Fourteen of the 60 deployments recorded 19 sharks in Trindade Island. In Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago (SPSPA), two pelagic and two demersal deployments recorded two and one shark, respectively, including the locally extinct Galapagos shark Carcharhinus galapagensis. Stereo-BRUVS should be considered as adjuncts to other non-invasive methods to monitor shark populations.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate features and clinical outcome of patients with clinically localized prostate cancer graded pT0 following radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP). STUDY DESIGN: Between 1974 and 2001 we performed 1,135 RRPs for cT1-T2 prostate cancer, of which 386 (34%) underwent 3-6 months of neoadjuvant endocrine treatment (NHT) before RRP. Median clinical follow-up was 53.8 months (range 24-251). Estimation of likelihood events for biochemical relapse was calculated according to the Kaplan-Meier method. Statistical differences between curves were calculated using the log-rank test. RESULTS: In 24 cases (2.12%) routine histologic workup failed to detect residual tumor. The pT0 group contained a higher proportion of cTla-b patients and a biopsy Gleason score < or =6. A tendency toward lower pre-operatory PSA levels in the pT0 group compared to the pT2-3 group was shown. PSA progression was observed in 3 pT0 patients, all of whom previously underwent NHT. CONCLUSION: Patients pT0 at RRP presented with lower preoperative PSA values and low preoperative Gleason score compared to the pT+ group. Absence of tumor at pathology examination has a different clinical meaning when it occurs following NHT or in untreated patients. Patients pT0 after NHT may have a worse clinical outcome than pT0 untreated patients.  相似文献

Cell movement is required in relevant physiological processes such as embryonic development, tissue and organ differentiation, inflammation, immune response and wound healing, along with pathological phenomena, such as cancer metastatic spread. Cell motility is tightly controlled by a complex and often redundant array of intracellular signaling pathways largely devoted to the dynamic regulation of the actin cytoskeletal network and of its relationship with the cell membrane and the extracellular matrix. Sex steroids, particularly estrogen and progesterone, are effective regulators of cell migration and tissue organization, and recent evidence indicates that this is in part obtained through the regulation of the cytoskeleton. Intriguingly, many of these regulatory actions related to cell movement are achieved through rapid, non-classical signaling of sex steroid receptors to kinase cascades, independently from nuclear alteration of gene expression or protein synthesis. The identification of the mechanistic basis for these rapid actions on cell cytoskeleton and cell movement has special relevance for the characterization of the effects of sex steroids in physiological conditions, such their role in the control of inflammation, brain or vascular cell remodelling, angiogenesis or wound healing, as well as in the context of pathological conditions such as steroid-sensitive cancer cell invasion and metastasis. This review highlights the physiological and clinical conditions where the regulatory effects on the cytoskeleton and cell movement of sex steroids might have a special importance, as well as the recent advances in the characterization of the mechanisms, providing insights and working hypotheses on possible clinical applications for the modulation of these pathways.  相似文献

Alcohol abuse is one of the major causes of liver fibrosis worldwide. Although the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis is a very complex phenomenon involving different molecular and biological mechanisms, several lines of evidence established that the first ethanol metabolite, acetaldehyde, plays a key role in the onset and maintenance of the fibrogenetic process. This review briefly summarizes the molecular mechanisms underlying acetaldehyde pro-fibrogenic effects. Liver fibrosis represents a general wound-healing response to a variety of insults. Although mortality due to alcohol abuse has been constantly decreasing in the past 20 years in Southern Europe and North America, in several Eastern-European countries and Great Britain Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD) shows a sharply increasing trend [Bosetti, C., Levi, F., Lucchini, F., Zatonski, W.A., Negri, E., La, V.C., 2007. Worldwide mortality from cirrhosis: an update to 2002. J. Hepatol. 46, 827-839]. ALD has a complex pathogenesis, in which acetaldehyde (AcCHO), the major ethanol metabolite, plays a central role. Ethanol is mainly metabolized in the liver by two oxidative pathways. In the first one ethanol is oxidized to acetaldehyde by the cytoplasmic alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme (ADH), acetaldehyde is then oxidized to acetic acid by the mitochondrial acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). The second pathway is inducible and involves the microsomal ethanol-oxidizing system (MEOS), in which the oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde and acetic acid also leads to generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Chronic ethanol consumption significantly inhibits mitochondrial ALDH activity while the rate of ethanol oxidation to acetaldehyde is even enhanced, resulting in a striking increase of tissue and plasma acetaldehyde levels [Lieber, C.S., 1997. Ethanol metabolism, cirrhosis and alcoholism. Clin. Chim. Acta 257, 59-84]. This review will focus on the molecular mechanisms by which acetaldehyde promote liver fibrosis.  相似文献

The automatic detection and tracking of human eyes and, in particular, the precise localization of their centers (pupils), is a widely debated topic in the international scientific community. In fact, the extracted information can be effectively used in a large number of applications ranging from advanced interfaces to biometrics and including also the estimation of the gaze direction, the control of human attention and the early screening of neurological pathologies. Independently of the application domain, the detection and tracking of the eye centers are, currently, performed mainly using invasive devices. Cheaper and more versatile systems have been only recently introduced: they make use of image processing techniques working on periocular patches which can be specifically acquired or preliminarily cropped from facial images. In the latter cases the involved algorithms must work even in cases of non-ideal acquiring conditions (e.g in presence of noise, low spatial resolution, non-uniform lighting conditions, etc.) and without user''s awareness (thus with possible variations of the eye in scale, rotation and/or translation). Getting satisfying results in pupils'' localization in such a challenging operating conditions is still an open scientific topic in Computer Vision. Actually, the most performing solutions in the literature are, unfortunately, based on supervised machine learning algorithms which require initial sessions to set the working parameters and to train the embedded learning models of the eye: this way, experienced operators have to work on the system each time it is moved from an operational context to another. It follows that the use of unsupervised approaches is more and more desirable but, unfortunately, their performances are not still satisfactory and more investigations are required. To this end, this paper proposes a new unsupervised approach to automatically detect the center of the eye: its algorithmic core is a representation of the eye''s shape that is obtained through a differential analysis of image intensities and the subsequent combination with the local variability of the appearance represented by self-similarity coefficients. The experimental evidence of the effectiveness of the method was demonstrated on challenging databases containing facial images. Moreover, its capabilities to accurately detect the centers of the eyes were also favourably compared with those of the leading state-of-the-art methods.  相似文献

Coagulation factor Xa appears involved in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis. Through its interaction with protease activated receptor-1, this protease signals myofibroblast differentiation in lung fibroblasts. Although fibrogenic stimuli induce factor X synthesis by alveolar cells, the mechanisms of local posttranslational factor X activation are not fully understood. Cell-derived microparticles are submicron vesicles involved in different physiological processes, including blood coagulation; they potentially activate factor X due to the exposure on their outer membrane of both phosphatidylserine and tissue factor. We postulated a role for procoagulant microparticles in the pathogenesis of interstitial lung diseases. Nineteen patients with interstitial lung diseases and 11 controls were studied. All subjects underwent bronchoalveolar lavage; interstitial lung disease patients also underwent pulmonary function tests and high resolution CT scan. Microparticles were enumerated in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid with a solid-phase assay based on thrombin generation. Microparticles were also tested for tissue factor activity. In vitro shedding of microparticles upon incubation with H2O2 was assessed in the human alveolar cell line, A549 and in normal bronchial epithelial cells. Tissue factor synthesis was quantitated by real-time PCR. Total microparticle number and microparticle-associated tissue factor activity were increased in interstitial lung disease patients compared to controls (84±8 vs. 39±3 nM phosphatidylserine; 293±37 vs. 105±21 arbitrary units of tissue factor activity; mean±SEM; p<.05 for both comparisons). Microparticle-bound tissue factor activity was inversely correlated with lung function as assessed by both diffusion capacity and forced vital capacity (r2 = .27 and .31, respectively; p<.05 for both correlations). Exposure of lung epithelial cells to H2O2 caused an increase in microparticle-bound tissue factor without affecting tissue factor mRNA.Procoagulant microparticles are increased in interstitial lung diseases and correlate with functional impairment. These structures might contribute to the activation of factor X and to the factor Xa-mediated fibrotic response in lung injury.  相似文献
