Summary Caffeine in 0.1% or higher concentration reversibly inhibits E. coli and yeast growth. It inhibits RNA and protein synthesis (Tables 1+3) within a few minutes after being added to the incubation medium (Fig. 2). A simple fabrication method of silver (Ag) nanoislands on ZnO films is presented. Continuous wave and time-resolved photoluminescence and transmission are employed to investigate modifications of visible and UV emissions of ZnO brought about by coupling to localized surface plasmons residing on Ag nanoislands. The size of the nanoislands, determining their absorption and scattering efficiencies, is found to be an important factor governing plasmonic modification of optical response of ZnO films. The presence of the Ag nanoislands of appropriate dimensions causes a strong (threefold) increase in emission intensity and up to 1.5 times faster recombination. The experimental results are successfully described by model calculations within the Mie theory. 相似文献

Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) are in a group of cancers that are the most resistant to treatment. The survival rate of HNSCC patients has been still very low since last 20 years. The existence of relationship between oncogenic and surrounding cells is probably the reason for a poor response to treatment. Fibroblasts are an important element of tumor stroma which increases tumor cells ability to proliferate. Another highly resistance, tumorigenic and metastatic cell population in tumor microenvironment are cancer initiating cells (CICs). The population of cancer initiating cells can be found regardless of differentiation status of cancer and they seem to be crucial for HNSCC development.In this review, we describe the current state of knowledge about HNSCC biological and physiological tumor microenvironment. 相似文献

Purinergic P2X receptors, when activated under pathological conditions, participate in induction of the inflammatory response and/or cell death. Both neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration represent hallmarks of multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. In the current study, we examined whether P2X7R is expressed in brain microvasculature of rats subjected to experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and explore possible relationships with blood-brain barrier (BBB) protein—claudin-5 after administration of P2X7R antagonist—Brilliant Blue G (BBG). Capillary fraction isolated from control and EAE rat brains was subjected to immunohistochemical and Western blot analyses. We document the presence of P2X7R in brain capillaries isolated from brain tissue of EAE rats. P2X7R is found to be localized on the abluminal surface of the microvessels and is co-expressed with PDGFβR, a marker of pericytes. We also show over-expression of this receptor in isolated capillaries during the course of EAE, which is temporally correlated with a lower protein level of PDGFβR, as well as claudin-5, a tight junction-building protein. Administration of a P2X7R antagonist to the immunized rats significantly reduced clinical signs of EAE and enhances protein expression of both claudin-5 and PDGFβR. These results indicate that P2X7 receptor located on pericytes may contribute to pathological mechanisms operated during EAE in cerebral microvessels influencing the BBB integrity. 相似文献

Many bird species produce low‐amplitude acoustic signals that have been poorly studied in comparison with loud, broadcast songs used for mate attraction and repelling rivals. In some birds, these soft signals were found to be emitted in an antagonistic context and were the most reliable predictor of a subsequent physical attack. The function of this signal is poorly understood, and several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanisms and possible functions of such low‐amplitude signals. The subject of this study is the ortolan bunting, a small passerine species that produces soft songs during territorial defence. In this study, we aim to study whether the soft songs of the ortolan bunting are a signal of increased aggressiveness by testing if they meet the context, prediction and response criteria of aggressive signals. We simulated stranger male intrusion into a focal male territory with three different playback experiments. We found no significant differences in the male responses to the taxidermic model regardless of whether they were or were not producing soft songs in response. The males responded more strongly to loud songs than to soft songs during the simulated intrusions, and the males did not treat soft songs as a predictor of conflict escalation. Although soft songs clearly appeared during territorial encounters and were not present during spontaneous singing before the intrusions, our results did not support the hypothesis that soft songs indicate aggressive character. We suggest that soft songs in the ortolan bunting are intentionally used by birds to modify their intentions or target‐specific individuals within a close range. 相似文献

The placenta plays a major role in embryo-fetal defects and intrauterine growth retardation after maternal alcohol consumption. Our aims were to determine the oxidative status and cellular and molecular oxidative stress effects on uterine myometrium and trophoblast-decidual tissue following perigestational alcohol intake at early organogenesis. CF-1 female mice were administered with 10% alcohol in drinking water for 17 days prior to and up to day 10 of gestation. Control females received ethanol-free water. Treated mice had smaller implantation sites compared to controls (p < 0.05), diminished maternal vascular lumen, and irregular/discontinuous endothelium of decidual vessels. The trophoblast giant cell layer was disorganized and presented increased abnormal nuclear frequency. The myometrium of treated females had reduced nitrite content, increased superoxide dismutase activity, and reduced glutathione (GSH) content (p < 0.05). However, the trophoblast-decidual tissue of treated females had increased nitrite content (p < 0.05), increased GSH level (p < 0.001), increased thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance concentration (p < 0.001), higher 3-nitrotyrosine immunoreaction, and increased apoptotic index (p < 0.05) compared to controls. In summary, perigestational alcohol ingestion at organogenesis induced oxidative stress in the myometrium and trophoblast-decidual tissue, mainly affecting cells and macromolecules of trophoblast and decidual tissues around early organogenesis, in CF-1 mouse, and suggests that oxidative-induced abnormal early placental formation probably leads to risk of prematurity and fetal growth impairment at term. 相似文献
