The phenology of microphallid trematodes within their intermediate hostpopulations has been studied on an intertidal mud flat. The parasites usethe mud snail Hydrobia ulvae and the infaunal amphipod Corophium volutatoras first and secondary intermediate host, respectively. Migratory shorebirdsact as final hosts. Our results show a general trend of decline in thedensity of infected intermediate hosts during both spring and autumn, whichcould mainly be ascribed to shorebird predation. During summer the densityof both infected snails and infected amphipods increased considerably, witha culmination in June within the snail population (1000 infectedm-2 and in August within the amphipod population (40 000infected m-2. This time lag in parasite occurrence could berelated to (1) the development time of larval trematodes within the snails,(2) higher ambient temperatures in late summer increasing parasitetransmission between snails and amphipods during this period, and (3) ageneral increase in the Corophium population during late summer. Fromsamples collected between 1990 and 1995 it is shown that microphallidtrematodes occasionally may give rise to mass mortality in the amphipodpopulation. The prerequisites for such an event are a high parasiteprevalence within the first intermediate host population and unusually highambient temperatures, facilitating parasite transmission to the secondaryintermediate host, C. volutator.  相似文献

Uptake and assimilation of nitrogen and phosphorus were studied in Olisthodiscus luteus Carter. A diel periodicity in nitrate reductase activity was observed in log and stationary phase cultures; there was a 10-fold difference in magnitude between maximum and minimum rates, but other cellular features such as chlorophyll a, carbon, nitrogen, C:N ratio (atoms) · cell?1 were less variable. Ks values (~2 μM) for uptake of nitrate-N and ammonium-N were observed. Phosphorus assimilated · cell?1· day?1 varied with declining external phosphorus concentrations; growth rates <0.5 divisions · day?1 were common at <0.5 μM PO4-P. Phosphate uptake rates (Ks= 1.0–1.98 μM) varied with culture age and showed multiphasic kinetic features. Alkaline phosphatase activity was not detected. Comparisons of the nutrient dynamics of O. luteus to other phytoplankton species and the ecological implications as related to the phytoplankton community of Narragansett Bay (Rhode Island) are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of infestation by the birdcherry-oat aphid ( Rhopalosiphum padi L.), on induction of PR-proteins was investigated in barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.), using barley lines susceptible or resistant to R. padi. The PR-proteins PR-1a (unknown function), PR-5a (acidic thaumatin) and peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) were not affected, whereas one chitinase (EC 3.2.1.14) and 4 β -1,3-glucanases (EC 3.2.1.39) were induced by the aphid treatment. In the resistant breeding line CI 16145, but not in the susceptible cultivar Golf, accumulation of one basic chitinase and two acidic β -1,3-glucanases increased with time from 2 until 11 days after infestation, as determined by western blots, with antibodies raised against purified chitinase (PR-3a) and β -1,3-glucanase (PR-2a) from barley. By isoelectric focusing, two additional basic β -1,3-glucanases were detected, which increased after infestation in both the resistant and the susceptible barley. The basic chitinase was only detected at days 7 and 11 in the susceptible cultivar, but already at day 2 in the resistant line. The induction was localized to the infested leaf. The PR-proteins PR-3a and PR-2a were also induced by the fungal pathogen ( Blumeria [syn. Erysiphe ] graminis f. sp. hordei ), methyl salicylate and, to a lower extent, by wounding with tweezers and methyl jasmonate (MeJA). Needle wounding performed to mimic aphid stylet penetration did not induce chitinase or β -1,3-glucanase. It is concluded that the fungal pathogen and the aphid infestation induce both similar and different responses, and that the aphid induction is not due to wounding only. The different responses in resistant and susceptible lines indicate that the induced enzymes may play a role in the resistance against aphid infestation.  相似文献

Forecasting harvests of olives destined for the production of olive oil can be based on counts of airborne olive pollen, and meteorological and agronomic observations. This study was carried out during six consecutive years (1990–1995) in the Campiña Alta (an olive-producing region in the province of Córdoba, south-west Spain). Olive pollen totals are the annual sum of the concentrations recorded for the periods that the filters of a Cour trap were exposed. The meteorological data are the values of accumulated rainfall between 1 September and the following 15 April (a date prior to the beginning of olive flowering). The agronomic data are the forecast and actual productions for the province of Córdoba, supplied by the Board of Agriculture of the Andalusian government, and the actual production of the Campiña Alta, supplied at the end of harvest by private olive-growing co-operatives. The data were combined, and four mathematical equations were obtained to forecast the crop 6 months in advance, with varying degrees of reliability. The reliability was very high for an appropriate agricultural area. The most accurate equation isY=?1.90×104+2.35X+53.94 (which forecasts the production of the Campiña Alta), whereY is the olive production (MT),X the olive pollen count,Z the rainfall prior to flowering, anda, b andc are constants. The aim with this study was to investigate whether abundance of farmland birds on fields at forest edges were associated with (I) type of field (young set-aside vs arable fields), (n) the length and structure of the field-forest edge zone, and/or (m) with residual habitats such as habitat islands, ditches, roads etc Twenty-eight farmland bird species (all nesting and/or foraging on open fields) were censused during the breeding season on 48 plots (open fields with adjoining forest edges) in the central parts of Sweden, covering a total area of 595 ha Skylark Alauda arvensis , linnet Carduelis cannabina , whitethroat Sylvia communis and whinchat Saxicola rubetra were found in significantly higher numbers in set-aside-plots than cereal ones However, the most important factor explaining variation in the abundance of most species was the structure of the field-forest ecotone, with the length of shrubby southern deciduous forest edges being the most important factor in 7 of the species Mixed forest edges seemed to be of some importance for the abundance of 3 species, while associations between abundance and length of the other deciduous and coniferous field-forest ecotones only were significant for one species each Skylarks, white wagtails Motaalla alba and whinchats were positively associated to ditches and yellowhammers Emberiza citrinella and linnets were significantly associated to habitat islands The observed preferences for set-asides and shrubby field forest edges are suggested to be results of reduced predation risk and increased food abundance  相似文献

Complexity is one of the hallmarks that applies to C2H2 type zinc finger proteins (ZFPs). Structurally distinct clusters of zinc finger modules define an extremely large superfamily of nucleic acid binding proteins with several hundred, perhaps thousands of different members in vertebrates. Recent discoveries have provided new insights into the biochemistry of RNA and DNA recognition, into ZFP evolution and genomic organization, and also into basic aspects of their biological function. However, as much as we have learned, other fundamental questions about ZFP function remain highly enigmatic. This essay is meant to define what we personally feel are important questions, rather than trying to provide a comprehensive, encyclopaedic review.  相似文献

Cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) in captivity are unusual in that they exhibit low levels of polymorphism and allelic diversity at the major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) class I loci. Since the polymorphism has previously only been examined in captive tamarins, we analyzed the Mhc class I alleles of a population of wild tamarins. These wild tamarins, like their captive counterparts, exhibited limited class I polymorphism. We also assessed the levels of polymorphism and allelic diversity at the Mhc class II DQA1, DQB1, DQB2, and the DRB loci in captive populations of cotton-top tamarins. In contrast to the extensive polymorphism in Old World monkeys, only two alleles were detected at each of DQA1 and DQB1. Also, the DQB2 locus was monomorphic and conserved between New and Old World monkeys. Sequences derived from four putative DRB loci were obtained, and extensive polymorphism was found at all four loci. Phylogenetic analysis did not indicate that any of the tamarin DRB loci, with the possible exception of Saoe-DRB3, were orthologous to the human DRB loci. At three of the DRB loci (Saoe-DRB11, Saoe-DRB * W12, Saoe-DRB * W22), the number of nonsynonymous changes was higher than the number of synonymous changes in the putative antigen recognition sites, indicative of positive selection. We found no support for a restriction on the polymorphism at the cotton-top tamarin class II loci. However, the allelic diversity at some of the Saoe-DRB loci is more limited than for the HLA-DRB1, consistent with a restriction imposed by the bone marrow-chimerical lifestyle.  相似文献

Abstract: Net additions to stock (NAS) are an indicator based on economy-wide material flow accounting and analysis. NAS, a measure of the physical growth rate of an economy, can be used for estimates of future waste flows. It is calculated using two methods: The indirect method of calculation is a simple difference between all input and output flows, whereas the direct method involves measuring the amounts of materials added to particular categories of physical stock and the amounts of waste flows from these stocks.
The study described in this article had one leading objective: to make available direct NAS data for the Czech Republic, which could later be used for predicting future waste flows. Two additional objectives emerged from the first: (1) to develop a method for direct NAS calculation from data availability in the Czech Republic; (2) to calculate NAS directly, compare the results with those achieved in indirect NAS calculation, and discuss the identified differences.
The NAS for the Czech Republic calculated by the direct method is equal to approximately 65 million tonnes on average in 2000–2002 and is approximately 27% lower than the NAS acquired by the indirect method of calculation. The actual values of directly calculated NAS and its uncertainties suggest that the indirect NAS is more likely to be an overestimation than an underestimation. Durables account for about 2% of the total direct NAS, whereas the rest is attributed to infrastructure and buildings. The direct NAS is dominated by nonmetal construction commodities such as building stone and bricks, which equal approximately 89% of the total direct NAS.
Calculation of NAS by the direct method has been proved to be feasible in the Czech Republic. Moreover, uncertainties related to direct NAS are lower than those related to indirectly acquired NAS.  相似文献

Summary Tritiated noradrenaline (NA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) (1.5–30 C) have been injected intraventricularly into normal or reserpine-nialamide pretreated rats 1/2 to 2 hours before the killing. Various parts of the brains were freeze-dried, reacted with formaldehyde gas and embedded in paraffin or Araldite. Before application of the stripping film emulsion many sections were photographed in the fluorescence microscope in order to perform a combined histochemical and autoradiographic study of the monoamine neurons. By such an approach it was possible to demonstrate 1. that the accumulation of radioactivity in cell bodies after 3H-NA and 3H-5-HT injection is localized to catecholamine (CA) and 5-HT cell bodies respectively; 2. that injected 3H-NA and 3H-5-HT in the doses used relatively selectively are taken up into the NA and 5-HT nerve terminals respectively, since the distribution of grains in the sections follow that of the fluorescent terminals; 3. that the accumulation of silver grains only reaches the zone (200–400 ) close to the ventricles and the ventral part of the subarachnoidal space. By grain counting it was possible to estimate that the degree of concentration of radioactivity in the monoamine cell bodies was up to 4 times that in the immediate surroundings. — The Araldite sections consistently gave a better resolution in the autoradiographic picture than the paraffin sections. It is postulated that freeze-drying and plastic embedding for autoradiography will be a valuable method for the cellular demonstration of certain biogenic amines which are not easily demonstrated by the histochemical fluorescence method and of other biologically active water-soluble compounds, since diffusion will be restricted to a minimum.This work has been supported by grants from the Medical Research Council (14X-715-04A, B69-14X-530-04) and by grants from M.
