Application of mefluidide (N-[2,4-dimethyl-5-([(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]amino) phenyl]acetamide) inhibits plant development in perennial grasses. This study examined the effect of mefluidide on the morphological development and digestibility of sorghum. In the greenhouse, 5.9 × 10–5 g active ingredient (a.i.) plant–1 applied at the seedling, eight-leaf and boot stages reduced mean plant height 70%, 59%, and 2%, respectively. Heights were also reduced 14%, 15% and 35% by 5.9 × 10–8, 5.9 × 10–7 and 5.9 × 10–6 gram a.i. plant–1 applied at the eight-leaf stage. Field application of 0.26 or 0.52 kg ha–1 mefluidide at either the eight-leaf or flagleaf stage reduced mean plant height of all cultivars. Basal tiller numbers increased 319% 28 d, and dry matter production was reduced 65% 42 d following mefluidide application at the eight-leaf stage. Treated stems were 34% higher and treated leaves were 7% higher in cellulase dry matter digestibility than control plants following mefluidide application at the eight-leaf stage. These results indicate that mefluidide application to vegetative stages in sorghum may enhance the forage value of the plants while it inhibits normal plant growth. 相似文献

The cooperatively breeding white-throated magpie-jay (Calocitta formosa) uses a variety of foraging tactics to find, harvest, and process food. Members of territorial groups forage together and may gain information about how to acquire food by observing each other. A field experiment was performed to determine whether a novel skill, door opening to gain access to food, was more rapidly acquired by members of groups in which a trained individual performed the skill. A higher proportion of jays in groups with behavioural ‘models’ (trained birds that opened doors in the presence of group members) acquired the door-opening skill than those groups without models. Young birds acquired the behaviour more frequently than older individuals. Aggressive behaviour at feeders may have affected the spread of the behaviour by reducing the likelihood that individuals performed the behaviour in the presence of other group members but may also have encouraged subordinate individuals to attempt door opening rather than ‘scrounge’. 相似文献

Summary A comparative study has been made of different laboratory and industrial wild-type strains ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae in relation to their flocculation behavior. All strains were inhibited by mannose and only one by maltose. In regard to the stability of these characters in the presence of proteases and high salt concentrations, a relevant degree of variation was found among the strains. This was to such an extent that it did not allow their inclusion in the Flol or NewFlo phenotypes. Suspension cultures of Sf-9 cells at different stages of growth were infected with a recombinant baculovirus expressing -galactosidase, using a range of multiplicities of infection (MOI) of 0.05 to 50. Following infection, the cells were resuspended either in the medium in which they had been grown or in fresh medium. Specific -galactosidase yields were not markedly affected by either MOI or medium change in cultures infected in early exponential phase (3×106 cells mL–1). In cultures infected at later growth stages, -galactosidase yields could only be maintained by medium replacement. The possibility that this requirement for medium replacement is due either to the accumulation of an inhibitory byproduct or nutrient limitation was examined. Alanine, a major byproduct of cultured insect cell metabolism, did not significantly reduce recombinant protein yield when added to infected cultures in concentrations of up to 40 mM. Following a factorial design, various nutrient concentrates were added alone or in combination to cultures infected in late exponential phase. Additions that included both yeastolate ultrafiltrate and an amino acid mixture restored specific -galactosidase yields to levels observed at earlier growth stages or in late stages with medium replacement; the addition of these concentrates, by permitting production at higher cell density, led to increases in the volumetric yield of recombinant protein. Together or separately, the concentrates when added to uninfected late exponential phase cultures, lead to a doubling of the maximum total cell protein level normally supported by unamended medium. 相似文献

The current approaches to the study of clonal plants are reviewed. Most studies concentrate at the level of the ramet and clonal fragment exploring the “microscopic” view of clonal plants, dealing with the translocation of resources, clonal integration, plasticity of growth etc. The information gained, by this approach can be used in the understanding of higher levels of organization within the clonal system either with the help of spatially explicit modelling techniques, or by using means and distributions of size within a population instead of studying individual ramets separately. Plant scientists use the term clone with two meanings, viz. (a) a set of physiologically connected, but potentially independent ramets, and (b) a set of genetically identical, but potentially physically separated individuals. The overlap of these terms differs between individual plant species, depending on the extent of physical separation of the ramets and the degree of physiological integration between the ramets; the lower the frequency of ramet separation, the closer are the physiological and genetic concepts of the clone. Three critical areas seem to be neglected in clonal plant research: (a) the interrelationship between hierarchical levels in clonal plants, (b) the particular spatial structure of their environment, and (c) the importance of clonal plants in different ecological communities. 相似文献

The aim of this work was to discover whether the respiration of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Huntsman) leaves, transferred to darkness after 7 h photosynthesis, showed an initial period of wasteful respiration. For young and old leaves, CO2 production and O2 uptake after 7 h photosynthesis were up to 56% higher than at the end of an 8-h night. The maximum catalytic activities of citrate synthase (EC 4.1.3.7), aconitase (EC 4.2.1.3), fumarase (EC 4.2.1.2) and cytochrome-c oxidase (EC 1.9.3.1) at the end of the day did not differ from those at the end of the night. Changes in the contents of glucose 6-phosphate, fructose-1,6-bisphosphate, dihydroxyacetone phosphate, and -ketoglutarate did not as a group parallel the changes in the rate of respiration. The detailed distribution of label from [U-14C] sucrose supplied to leaves in the dark was similar at the end of the day and the end of the night. No correlation was observed between the rates of leaf respiration and extension growth. The mutation causing Huntington disease (HD) has been identified as an expansion of a polymorphic (CAG)

repeat in the 5 part of the huntingtin gene. The specific neuropathology of HD, viz. selective neuronal loss in the caudate nucleus and putamen, cannot be explained by the widespread expression of the gene. Since somatic expansion is observed in affected tissue in myotonic dystrophy, we have studied the length of the (CAG)

repeat in various regions of the brain. Although we have not found clear differences when comparing severely and mildly affected regions, we have observed a minor increase in repeat length upon comparison of affected brain samples with cerebellum or peripheral blood. Hence, although further somatic amplification seems to occur in affected areas of the brain, the differences between affected and unaffected regions are too small to make this mechanism an obvious candidate for the cause of differential neuronal degeneration in HD. 相似文献

Using, as an example, the susceptibility of 437 bacterial strains (belonging to nomenspecies of the genera,Pseudomonas andXanthomonas) to 86 bacteriophage preparations, this study describes how sequential removal of the more distinctive emerging clusters (or selected groups of elements with prior knowledge of their taxonomic relationships) in a principal components analysis can be employed to analyze, the affinities among the remaining original numerical units. The initial, well-defined clusters had a constraining impact on other elements. This constraint was eased upon successive removal from the data matrix of initially distinctive clusters, thereby enabling clearer views of the relationships among the remaining elements.
