We report quantitative estimates of intergenerational transmission and population-wide inequality for wealth measures in a set of hunter-gatherer populations. Wealth is defined broadly as factors that contribute to individual or household well-being, ranging from embodied forms such as weight and hunting success to material forms such household goods, as well as relational wealth in exchange partners. Intergenerational wealth transmission is low to moderate in these populations, but is still expected to have measurable influence on an individual's life chances. Wealth inequality (measured with Gini coefficients) is moderate for most wealth types, matching what qualitative ethnographic research has generally indicated (if not the stereotype of hunter-gatherers as extreme egalitarians). We discuss some plausible mechanisms for these patterns, and suggest ways in which future research could resolve questions about the role of wealth in hunter-gatherer social and economic life.  相似文献

The rare sugar xylitol is a five-carbon polyol (pentitol) that has beneficial health effects. Xylitol has global markets and, therefore, it represents an alternative to current dominant sweeteners. The research on microbial reduction of d-xylose to xylitol has been focused on metabolically engineered Saccharomycess cerevisiae and Candida strains. The Candida strains have an advantage over the metabolically engineered S. cerevisiae in terms of d-xylose uptake and maintenance of the intracellular redox balance. Due to the current industrial scale production of xylitol, it has become an inexpensive starting material for the production of other rare sugar. The first part of this mini-review concentrates on the biochemistry of xylitol biosynthesis and the problems related to intracellular redox balance.  相似文献

The production of seed in flowering plants is complicated by the need to first invest in reproductive shoots, inflorescences, flowers, and fruit. Furthermore, in many species, it will be months between plants generating flowers and setting seed. How can plants therefore produce an optimal seed-set relative to environmental resources when the “reproductive architecture” that supports seed-set needs to be elaborated so far in advance? Here, we address this question by investigating the spatio-temporal control of reproductive architecture in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and Brassica napus. We show that resource and resource-related signals such as substrate volume play a key role in determining the scale of reproductive effort, and that this is reflected in the earliest events in reproductive development, which broadly predict the subsequent reproductive effort. We show that a series of negative feedbacks both within and between developmental stages prevent plants from over-committing to early stages of development. These feedbacks create a highly plastic, homeostatic system in which additional organs can be produced in the case of reproductive failure elsewhere in the system. We propose that these feedbacks represent an “integrated dominance” mechanism that allows resource use to be correctly sequenced between developmental stages to optimize seed set.  相似文献

We used reversed phase liquid chromatography?Celectrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry for direct analysis of mycolic acids (MAs) from four different cultivations of Rhodococcus erythropolis. This technique enabled us to identify and quantify the specific molecular species of MAs directly from lipid extracts of the bacterium, including the determination of their basic characteristics such as retention time and mass spectra. We identified a total of 60 molecular species of MAs by means of LC/MS. In collision-induced dissociation tandem mass spectrometry, the [M-H]? ions eliminated two residues, i.e., meroaldehyde and carboxylate anions containing ??-alkyl chains. The structural information from these fragment ions affords structural assignment of the mycolic acids, including the lengths and number of double bond(s). Two strains, i.e., R. erythropolis CCM 2595 and genetically modified strain CCM 2595 pSRK 21 phe were cultivated on two different substrates (phenol and phenol with addition of humic acids as a sole carbon source). The addition of humic acids showed that there is a marked increase of unsaturated mycolic acids, mostly in the range of 20?C100?%. This effect is more pronounced in the R. erythropolis CCM 2595 strain.  相似文献

In the quest for fine mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) at a subcentimorgan scale, several methods that involve the construction of inbred lines and the generation of large progenies of such inbred lines have been developed (Complex Trait Consortium 2003). Here we present an alternative method that significantly speeds up QTL fine mapping by using one segregating population. As a first step, a rough mapping analysis is performed on a small part of the population. Once the QTL have been mapped to a chromosomal interval by standard procedures, a large population of 1000 plants or more is analyzed with markers flanking the defined QTL to select QTL isogenic recombinants (QIRs). QIRs bear a recombination event in the QTL interval of interest, while other QTL have the same homozygous genotype. Only these QIRs are subsequently phenotyped to fine map the QTL. By focusing at an early stage on the informative individuals in the population only, the efforts in population genotyping and phenotyping are significantly reduced as compared to prior methods. The principles of this approach are demonstrated by fine mapping an erucic acid QTL of rapeseed at a subcentimorgan scale.  相似文献

We assessed the role of nutrients and disturbance experienced by mothers (maternal effects) in the growth of progeny in a pot experiment using two Plantago species. Photosynthetic capacity, biomass allocation and fecundity were measured. Offspring of plants grown in nutrient poor conditions produced more leaves, spikes and longer leaves and in case of P. lanceolata , they had also higher photosynthetic capacity. The progeny of P. media mothers that had resprouted after disturbance was favored in nutrient poor conditions whereas the progeny of undisturbed plants was favored in nutrient rich conditions.
This study demonstrates that maternal effects may play a role in the success of either a seeding or a resprouting strategy in environments with different nutrient availability. Moreover, we showed that alteration of photosynthetic capacity, even during adult stages, is a mechanism through which maternal plants may impact their progeny.  相似文献

Clonal growth confers a number of benefits on plants, but involves some costs as well. We examined whether seed reproduction is reduced in clonal plants due to these costs. Further, we investigated whether this relationship differs for species with optima at stressful or low‐productivity sites, as a possible indication that clonality acts as insurance against reduced seed reproduction in such conditions. We evaluated 472 species for which seed production per unit area had been determined, and employed this information together with data on seed mass, height at maturity, clonal traits and optimum habitat conditions (using Ellenberg indicator values). There was a strong hyperbolic relationship between seed output and seed mass, with a scaling coefficient of ?1, indicative of a simple tradeoff relationship. We performed analyses both with and without taking phylogeny into account. Reproductive output (i.e. the product of seed output and seed size) of was lower in clonal than in non‐clonal plants (in both with and without phylogeny incorporated in the analyses); within non‐clonal species, it was high in annuals and monocarpic plants relative to nonclonal perennials. Reproductive output was lower in clonal plants with extensive lateral spread. This may be due to lower mortality of such plants, which should favor reduced reproductive output, but direct resource tradeoff may also be involved. Reproductive output in all clonal and non‐clonal plants increased with the nutrient status and light level of the species’ optimum, and decreased with moisture. Because the proportion of clonal plants in vegetation is known to decrease along the same gradients, we can infer that as sexual reproduction becomes increasingly difficult in terms of these characteristics, clonal plants may capitalize on their capacity to bypass it. However, the relationships with habitat parameters disappeared in the phylogenetically corrected analysis, indicating that habitat preferences and reproductive output evolved together.  相似文献

We describe a generic design for ratiometric analysis suitable for determination of copy number variation (CNV) class of a gene. Following two initial sequence-specific PCR priming cycles, both ends of both amplicons (one test and one reference) in a duplex reaction, are all primed by the same universal primer (UP). Following each amplification denaturation step, the UP target and its reverse complement (UP') in each strand form a hairpin. The bases immediately beyond the 3'-end of the UP and 5' of UP' are chosen such as not to base pair in the hairpin (otherwise priming is ablated). This hairpin creates a single constant environment for priming events and chaperones free 3'-ends of amplicon strands. The resultant 'amplification ratio control system' (ARCS) permits ratiometric representation of amplicons relative to the original template into PCR plateau phase. These advantages circumvent the need for real-time PCR for quantitation. Choice of different %(G+C) content for the target and reference amplicons allows liquid phase thermal melt discrimination and quantitation of amplicons. The design is generic, simple to set up and economical. Comparisons with real-time PCR and other techniques are made and CNV assays demonstrated for haptoglobin duplicon and 'chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 3-like 1' gene.  相似文献
