Predictions on the consequences of the rapidly increasing atmospheric CO2 levels and associated climate warming for population dynamics, ecological community structure and ecosystem functioning depend on mechanistic energetic models of temperature effects on populations and their interactions. However, such mechanistic approaches combining warming effects on metabolic (energy loss of organisms) and feeding rates (energy gain by organisms) remain a key, yet elusive, goal. Aiming to fill this void, we studied the metabolic rates and functional responses of three differently sized, predatory ground beetles on one mobile and one more resident prey species across a temperature gradient (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 °C). Synthesizing metabolic and functional‐response theory, we develop novel mechanistic predictions how predator–prey interaction strengths (i.e., functional responses) should respond to warming. Corroborating prior theory, warming caused strong increases in metabolism and decreases in handling time. Consistent with our novel model, we found increases in predator attack rates on a mobile prey, whereas attack rates on a mostly resident prey remained constant across the temperature gradient. Together, these results provide critically important information that environmental warming generally increases the direct short‐term per capita interaction strengths between predators and their prey as described by functional‐response models. Nevertheless, the several fold stronger increase in metabolism with warming caused decreases in energetic efficiencies (ratio of per capita feeding rate to metabolic rate) for all predator–prey interactions. This implies that warming of natural ecosystems may dampen predator–prey oscillations thus stabilizing their dynamics. Locomotion is important to animals because it has direct implications for fitness through its role in predator escape, prey capture, and territory defence. Despite significant advances in our understanding of animal locomotion, studies exploring how substrate properties affect locomotor performance remain scant. In the present study, we explore how variation in substrate (sand, slate, cork) affects locomotor performance in lacertid lizards that differ in morphology. Moreover, we explore whether substrate effects are the same for different types of locomotor performance (speed, acceleration, and stamina). Our results show that the substrate affected most types of locomotor performance studied but not always in the same way. Although substrate effects were species‐dependent for the maximal speed over 50 cm and the distance run to exhaustion, this was not the case for acceleration capacity. These results suggest that substrate texture differentially affects burst performance vs. longer duration measures of locomotor performance. Finally, straightforward relationships between habitat use and the substrate on which performance was maximized were not observed. Preparation and properties of an improved photoaffinity ligand for the N-formyl peptide receptor 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A new superior photoaffinity ligand for the N-formyl peptide receptor was prepared by derivatization of N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe-Lys with a commercially available heterobifunctional crosslinking agent. The product, N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe-N epsilon-(2-(p-azidosalicylamido)ethyl-1,3'- dithiopropionyl)-Lys was readily synthesized and radiolabelled, and had increased specificity and stability as compared to previously used photoaffinity ligands. The ligand rapidly associated with the receptor with high affinity (Kd = 0.28 nM). Once bound, it was virtually non-dissociable (in the absence of photolysis) in an experimental time-frame (t1/2 (off) = 154 min). The covalent incorporation of the photoaffinity ligand into the receptor upon irradiation was complete within 5 min, minimizing cell damage, and the efficiency of covalent incorporation was approx. 40%. The derivative had enhanced biological activity, having an ED50 for superoxide anion production of 0.23 nM, 27-fold lower than its parent peptide. This derivative of the N-formyl peptide was useful for up to 3 months after radiolabelling, showing a progressive decline in specific activity during storage in the dark at 4 degrees C. The enhanced stability, reproducibility and solubility of the photoaffinity ligand is expected to aid in the purification of the N-formyl peptide receptor and will prove a useful tool for analysing receptor-mediated processes. 相似文献

The southern African landscape appears to have experienced frequent shifts in vegetation associated with climatic change through the mid-Miocene and Plio-Pleistocene. One group whose historical biogeography may have been affected by these fluctuations are the dwarf chameleons (Bradypodion), due to their associations with distinct vegetation types. Thus, this group provides an opportunity to investigate historical biogeography in light of climatic fluctuations. A total of 138 dwarf chameleons from the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa were sequenced for two mitochondrial genes (ND2 and 16S), and resulting phylogenetic analyses showed two well-supported clades that are distributed allopatrically. Within clades, diversity among some lineages was low, and haplotype networks showed patterns of reticulate evolution and incomplete lineage sorting, suggesting relatively recent origins for some of these lineages. A dispersal-vicariance analysis and a relaxed Bayesian clock suggest that vicariance between the two main clades occurred in the mid-Miocene, and that both dispersal and vicariance have played a role in shaping present-day distributions. These analyses also suggest that the most recent series of lineage diversification events probably occurred within the last 3-6 million years. This suggests that the origins of many present-day lineages were founded in the Plio-Pleistocene, a time period that corresponds to the reduction of forests in the region and the establishment of the fynbos biome. 相似文献

Abstract: The two odontocete taxa Squalodon grateloupii and Patriocetus ehrlichii, both the type species of their respective genera, have been at the centre of a great deal of taxonomic confusion. Originally regarded to be conspecific, these two taxa have been the subject of a bewildering taxonomic debate lasting for more than a century, which recently led to the suggestion to abandon these widely used names and replace S. grateloupii with the similar, yet independently and later proposed name S. gratelupi as the type species of Squalodon. Here, we attempt to summarise the events leading to the current confused situation in the hope of resolving this issue once and for all and argue that the name Squalodon grateloupii, as originally proposed, should be reinstated. 相似文献
