Abstract We established a synchronous culture of Magnetospirillum sp. AMB-1 by repeated cold treatment at 5 °C. This is the first reported synchronous culture of a magnetic bacterium. Cold treatment did not affect magnetic particle synthesis or cell morphology. Iron uptake was observed both before and during cell division. The amount of iron uptake was almost equivalent to that of magnetite formation. The proportion of magnetosensitive cells did not change during cell division. 相似文献

A theory is presented for appearance of periodic band patterns of ion concentration and electric potential associated with
electric current surrounding a unicellular or multicellular system of a cylindrical shape. A flux continuity at the membrane
(or the surface) is reduced to a nonlinear equation expressing passive and active fluxes across the membrane and intracellular
diffusion flux. It is shown that, when an external parameter is varied from the sub-critical region, i.e. the homogeneous
flux state, a symmetry breaking along a longitudinal axis usually appears prior to the one along a circumferential direction.
The spectrum analysis shows that the correlation length is longer in the longitudinal direction. Growth of the band pattern
from a patch-shaped pattern is demonstrated by the use of numerical calculations of proton concentration on the two-dimensional
space of cylindrical surface. An experimental example of formative process of H+ banding is given for the internodal cell ofChara. It is shown that small patches on the surface decline or are sometimes gathered to the band surrounding the circle. The

For an artificial membrane prepared by infiltrating dioleyl phosphate (DOPH) into pores of a Millipore filter, we propose a theoretical model for explaining observed data on electric behavior, such as d.c. current-voltage characteristics and self-sustained oscillations of the electric potential. The model consists of a simple electric circuit composed of electric resistances and capacitances as given functions of internal variables which represent conformational states of DOPH molecules and salt concentration inside the pore concerned. The kinetic equations for these variables are the same as those presented previously for describing a phase transition of DOPH. except for a slight modification taking account of effects of salt accumulation inside the pore. The present theory can describe well the I-V hysteresis and various features of spike-like oscillations with long periods of up to a few hours in the absence of external force and also short-period oscillations with periods of the order of 1 s under pressure difference. 相似文献

Stable electrochemical patterns appear spontaneously around roots of higher plants and are closely related to growth. An electric potential pattern accompanied by lateral root emergence was measured along the surface of the primary root of adzuki bean (Phaseolus angularis) over 21 h using a microelectrode manipulated by a newly developed apparatus. The electric potential became lower at the point where a lateral root emerged. This change preceded the emergence of the lateral root by about 10 h. A theory is presented for calculating two-dimensional patterns of electric potential and electric current density around the primary root (and a lateral root) using only data on the one-dimensional electric potential measured near the surface of the primary root. The development of the lateral root inside the primary root is associated with the influx of electric current of about 0.7 μA·cm−2 at the surface. 相似文献

The higher sensitivity for sweeteners can be achieved by newly developed lipid/polymer membranes. The membrane is composed of lipids such as phosphoric acid di-n-hexadecyl ester and tetradodecylammoniumbromid, and a plasticizer, dioctyl phenylphosphonate. As a result of changing electric charge of the membrane surface, the newly developed membrane shows 5-10 times higher sensitivity for sucrose than the conventional ones. We also applied the sensor to other sugars such as sugar alcohol which is used as alternative sweetness or food additives. The experimental results of other sweeteners relatively correspond to human sensory evaluation, though the sensitivity for some sugars need to be improved. 相似文献

New World monkeys are unique in exhibiting a color-vision polymorphism due to an allelic variation of the red-green visual pigment gene. This makes these monkeys excellent subjects for studying the adaptive evolution of the visual system from both molecular and ecological viewpoints. However, the allele frequencies of the pigments within a natural population have not been well investigated. As a first step toward understanding the relationship between vision and behavior, we conducted color-vision typing by analyzing fecal DNA from two wild groups of white-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) and one group of black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) inhabiting Santa Rosa National Park of Costa Rica. All color-typed monkeys were individually identified. In C. capucinus and A. geoffroyi we found three and two pigment types, respectively, and the spectral mechanism that created one of the two Ateles pigments was found to be novel. In one Cebus group and the Ateles group, all alleles were present, whereas in the other Cebus group only two alleles were found, with one allele predominating. This was likely due to the effect of close inbreeding, indicating that wild populations can exhibit a variety of allele compositions. This result also suggests that the color-vision polymorphism can be easily distorted by natural factors, such as inbreeding, skewing the population structure. 相似文献

The neuropeptide Oxytocin (OT) has been implicated in many aspects of mammalian social behavior. This study investigates how OT interacts with two well-studied determinants of cooperative behavior: incentives and social information. Participants received OT or a placebo and played two economic games: a Coordination Game (with strong incentives to cooperate) and a Prisoner's Dilemma (with weak cooperative incentives). OT enhanced cooperation only when social information was present, and this effect was significantly more pronounced in the Coordination Game. When social information was lacking, OT surprisingly decreased cooperation. Consistent with the well-established role of OT in trust-building and in social cognition, social information appears to be crucial for OT to boost cooperative expectations in an interdependent social interaction that provides incentives to cooperate. When these cues are absent, OT appears to instead elicit a risk-averse strategy. 相似文献
