Chromosome counts in the Carex flava complex (Cyperaceae) in Finland

Chromosome numbers from 17 Finnish populations of six taxa in the Carex flava complex were examined. Special attention was given to taxa claimed to be endemic to Fennoscandia. The meiotic counts for C. flava n = 30, C. viridula var. viridula n = 35 and var. pulchella n = 35 are in accordance with previous reports. The counts for C. jemtlandica n = 34, C. bergrothii n = 35, and C. kotilaini n = 34 are new. The hybrid C. flava × kotilaini reveals severely disturbed meiosis with many uni- and multivalents. The results are briefly discussed in relation to morphological data. Carex jemtlandica should evidently be included in C. lepidocarpa. Carex bergrothii and C. kotilaini belong to the polymorphic C. viridula , but the latter probably consitute a specific cytotype.     

Preparation of methacrylate-embedded cytologic smears from prefixed cells

A new method of preparing smears of alcohol-fixed cytologic material by using methacrylate embedding medium to make the cells adhere on plain glass slides is presented. After centrifugation, the cytologic material was mixed with Lowicryl K4M embedding medium and smeared on slides. The polymerization process was achieved by exposing the slides to ultraviolet light. The morphology in such smears was similar to that of specimens prepared by the filter technique. The methacrylate method does not have the most common disadvantages of the filter technique--the development of air bubbles over time and the visually disturbing presence of the filter.     

Measuring the lung function in the mouse: the challenge of size

Measurement of the effects of drugs, mediators and infectious agents on various models of lung disease, as well as assessment of lung function in the intact mouse has the potential for significantly advancing our knowledge of lung disease. However, the small size of the mouse presents significant challenges for the assessment of lung function. Because of compromises made between precision and noninvasiveness, data obtained may have an uncertain bearing on the mechanical response of the lung. Nevertheless, considerable recent progress has been made in developing valid and useful measures of mouse lung function. These advances, resulting in our current ability to measure sophisticated indices of lung function in laboratory animals, are likely to lead to important insights into the mechanisms of lung disease.     

Age-Related Features of Cataractogenesis in Salmon Fry. III. Age-Related Dynamics of Liver Lipid Composition during Cataractogenesis

When studying the cataract pathogenesis in salmon fry, we found changes in the content of individual; phospholipid fractions and fatty acid composition in the liver of diseased and healthy fish. The age-related changes correlated with the increased antioxidant activity and decreased liver content of malondialdehyde.     

Time relationships and reversal by two indoleamines of the pinealectomy-inhibited thyrotropin secretion in male rats

Time relationships and mediators of the inhibitory effect of pinealectomy on cold-induced TSH secretion were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Pinealectomy but not sham operation significantly reduced the TSH cold-response (30 min at +4 degrees C) in 6-8 week-old rats on the 3rd postoperative day. Longer postoperative periods resulted in gradual attenuation of the effect of pinealectomy. Pinealectomy did not modify basal TSH levels on the 3rd or 7th postoperative day. Melatonin, arginine vasotocin and crude pineal extracts failed to antagonise the suppressed cold-response in pinealectomised rats. 5-Hydroxytryptamine and 6-methoxy-tetrahydro-beta-carboline, however, antagonised partially but significantly the pinealectomy-induced reduction in TSH cold-response. Although transient, the suppression of cold-stimulated TSH secretion by pinealectomy may be caused by lack of two pineal indoleamines 5-hydroxytryptamine and/or 6-methoxy-tetrahydro-beta-carboline.
