Estimates of life‐history parameters were made for shark‐like batoids of conservation concern Rhynchobatus spp. (Rhynchobatus australiae, Rhynchobatus laevis and Rhynchobatus palpebratus) and Glaucostegus typus using vertebral ageing. The sigmoid growth functions, Gompertz and logistic, best described the growth of Rhynchobatus spp. and G. typus, providing the best statistical fit and most biologically appropriate parameters. The two‐parameter logistic was the preferred model for Rhynchobatus spp. with growth parameter estimates (both sexes combined) L = 2045 mm stretch total length, LST and k = 0·41 year?1. The same model was also preferred for G. typus with growth parameter estimates (both sexes combined) L = 2770 mm LST and k = 0·30 year?1. Annual growth‐band deposition could not be excluded in Rhynchobatus spp. using mark‐recaptured individuals. Although morphologically similar G. typus and Rhynchobatus spp. have differing life histories, with G. typus longer lived, slower growing and attaining a larger maximum size.  相似文献

Abstract Using a high level Escherichia coli expression system for the Penicillium chrysogenum penDE gene, we have produced acyl-coenzyme A: isopenicillin N acyltransferase (AT) enzymes containing amino acid substitutions at three conserved Ser residues. Chosen for study based on amino acid sequence homologies to other proteins, Ser227, Ser230 and Ser309 were changed to Cys or Ala to assess amino acid side chain involvement in proenzyme cleavage and AT enzyme mechanism. Substitutions at Ser230 had no effect on proenzyme cleavage, acyl-coenzyme A: IPN acyltransferase (IAT) or acyl-coenzyme A: 6-aminopenicillanic acid acyltransferase (AAT) activities. While Ser227→Cys had no effect, Ser227→Ala produced uncleaved proenzyme lacking both AAT and IAT activities, suggesting that the presence of a nucleophilic side chain at this residue is required for proenzyme cleavage and AT activity. Substitution of Ser309→Cys did not appreciably prevent proenzyme cleavage, IAT or AAT activity. Recombinant AT (recAT) proenzyme containing Ser309→Ala was cleaved; however, IAT and AAT activities were not observed. This separation of proenzyme cleavage from IAT and AAT activities has not been previously observed, and suggests that Ser309 is involved in substrate acylation.  相似文献

Variability of resting respiratory drive and timing in healthy subjects   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Studies of breathing pattern have focused primarily on changes in the mean values of the breathing pattern components, whereas there has been minimal investigation of breath-to-breath variability, which should provide information on the constancy with which respiration is controlled. In this study we examined the variability of breathing pattern both on a breath-to-breath and day-to-day basis by calculating the coefficient of variation (i.e., the standard deviation expressed as a percentage of the mean). By examining breath-to-breath data, we found that the coefficients of variation of tidal volume (VT) and fractional inspiratory time (TI/TT, an index of timing) obtained with an inductive plethysmograph and spirometer were within 1% of each other. Examination of breath-to-breath variability in breathing pattern over a 15-min period in 65 subjects revealed large coefficients of variation, indicating the need to base calculations on a relatively large number of breaths. Less breath-to-breath variability was observed in respiratory frequency [f, 20.8 +/- 11.5% (SD)] and TI/TT (17.9 +/- 6.5%) than in VT (33 +/- 14.9%) and mean inspiratory flow (VT/TI, an index of drive; 31.6 +/- 12.6%; P less than 0.0001). Older subjects (60-81 yr) displayed greater breath-to-breath variability than young subjects (21-50 yr). Bees are ecosystem service providers that are globally threatened by losses of plant diversity. However, effects of multi‐species floral displays on bees in agro‐ecosystems with variable landscape context remain poorly understood, hindering pollinator conservation tactics. We addressed this knowledge gap through a novel application of the modified Price equation to evaluate responses of bees to diverse floral communities on 36 farms in Washington, USA, over 3 years. We found that floral richness, not floral identity, was the best predictor of floral visits by bees. However, the benefits of regionally rare floral species (i.e. plants found at relatively few sites) were only fully realised when farms were embedded in diverse landscapes. Our analysis used the modified Price equation to demonstrate that plant diversity, rather than specific plant species, promotes pollinator visitation, and that diverse landscapes promote the response of pollinators to regionally rare plant species.  相似文献
