Position of enigmatic miniature trichomycterid catfishes inferred from molecular data (Siluriformes)

Trichomycteridae is a well‐corroborated catfish family that comprises about 300 valid species distributed in eight subfamilies. The phyletic status of the Trichomycterinae is uncertain, with different hypothesis regarding the position of the miniaturized Trichomycterus hasemani group. This group comprises four valid species, and neither its monophyly nor its positioning among the Trichomycteridae was tested in a phylogenetic framework. Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood analyses of a molecular data set comprising the mitochondrial genes 12S and 16S and the nuclear genes H3, MYH6 and RAG2 (2983 bp) for 26 taxa highly supported the miniature catfish T. hasemani group as monophyletic and sister to the Tridentinae, consequently recognized as a new genus of this subfamily. Potamoglanis gen. nov. is diagnosed by seven character states: an angle of 35–40° between the main longitudinal axis of the head and the main axis of the autopalatine; thin tubular shape of the second ceratobranchial; presence of six or seven anal‐fin rays; eyes dorsally placed on head; opercular and interopercular odontodes patches not juxtaposed; absence of a distal process on the hyomandibula and presence of a long process on the anterior region of the hyomandibula. Potamoglanis gen. nov is similar to the Tridentinae genera by the presence of a wide cranial fontanelle; presence of a short ventral process in the opercular bone and by the origin of the dorsal fin placed in a vertical through the anal‐fin origin.     

Bioreduction of aromatic aldehydes and ketones by fruits’ barks of Passiflora edulis

A series of ketones and aldehydes were reduced using plant cell preparations from fruits’ barks of Passiflora edulis in water as solvent. The reduced products were obtained in very good yields, and low to moderate enantiomeric excesses were reached with aromatic ketones and a β-ketoester. This is the first time that the biotransformation of carbonyl compounds have been successfully achieved using Passiflora species.

Regulated Nuclear Trafficking of rpL10A Mediated by NIK1 Represents a Defense Strategy of Plant Cells against Virus

The NSP-interacting kinase (NIK) receptor-mediated defense pathway has been identified recently as a virulence target of the geminivirus nuclear shuttle protein (NSP). However, the NIK1–NSP interaction does not fit into the elicitor–receptor model of resistance, and hence the molecular mechanism that links this antiviral response to receptor activation remains obscure. Here, we identified a ribosomal protein, rpL10A, as a specific partner and substrate of NIK1 that functions as an immediate downstream effector of NIK1-mediated response. Phosphorylation of cytosolic rpL10A by NIK1 redirects the protein to the nucleus where it may act to modulate viral infection. While ectopic expression of normal NIK1 or a hyperactive NIK1 mutant promotes the accumulation of phosphorylated rpL10A within the nuclei, an inactive NIK1 mutant fails to redirect the protein to the nuclei of co-transfected cells. Likewise, a mutant rpL10A defective for NIK1 phosphorylation is not redirected to the nucleus. Furthermore, loss of rpL10A function enhances susceptibility to geminivirus infection, resembling the phenotype of nik1 null alleles. We also provide evidence that geminivirus infection directly interferes with NIK1-mediated nuclear relocalization of rpL10A as a counterdefensive measure. However, the NIK1-mediated defense signaling neither activates RNA silencing nor promotes a hypersensitive response but inhibits plant growth and development. Although the virulence function of the particular geminivirus NSP studied here overcomes this layer of defense in Arabidopsis, the NIK1-mediated signaling response may be involved in restricting the host range of other viruses.     

Species diversity and phylogeography of the Australoheros autrani group (Teleostei,Cichlidae) in eastern Brazil

Cichlid fishes are an important model system in evolutionary biology, primarily because of their exceptional diversity. However, while some cichlid assemblages, such as the ones of the African Great Lakes, have received considerable attention, others are not well studied, including many riverine species. Here, we focus on the Australoheros autrani species group and first report a new record of Australoheros in the upper Paranaíba River drainage, extending the known distribution range of this genus. Through Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of these specimens as well as available sequences, we assigned the newly discovered population to Australoheros barbosae. We corroborate the monophyly of the A. autrani species group and the presence of three species in the upper/middle Paraíba do Sul River basin as well as molecular diagnostic characters for each. Finally, we provide evidence for a recent expansion of A. barbosae.
