Iridescent virus replication: patterns of nucleic acid synthesis in insect cells infected with iridescent virus types 2 and 6

The patterns of nucleic acid synthesis in insect cells infected with iridescent virus types 2 and 6 has been examined using nucleic acid hybridization techniques. Virus-specific RNA synthesis was detected 24 hr after infection. Virus-specific DNA synthesis was detected 96 hr after infection. Host-specific nucleic acid synthesis declined throughout infection, and host-specific nucleic acid synthesis was detected only in the first 48 hr of infection. The synthesis of iridescent virus progeny DNA molecules precedes the appearance of mature iridescent virus particles.     

Interactions in the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids: analysis by a simple mathematical model

Interactions in the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids have been simulated in a simple model system. In the development of this system it was assumed that simple competitive inhibition occurs between parent acids as they are transformed (via dehydrogenation and chain lengthening) to their derivative acids. Numerical solutions of this model system give the composition of the tissue pool of polyunsaturated acids as a function of the proportion of the parent acids in the diet. Experimental data have been analyzed in the light of relations generated by the model system and the parallels observed substantiate the assumptions postulated in the development of the model system.     

The effects of 5-bromo-2-thienyl-ethyl-ketone thiosenicarbazone on ovarian cyclicity and ovulation in the rat.

Pseudopregnant and cyclic rats were injected for 5 to 26 days with daily doses of 5 and/or 3 mg of 5-bromo-2-thienyl-ethyl-ketone thiosemicarbazone (70026) starting on Day 0 (the day of oestrus). The vaginal smear cytology, record of ovulation and ability to breed and conceive were compared with the results for corn oil-injected controls. Both doses of 70026 were found to cause a reappearance of pro-oestrous and/or oestrous vaginal smears within 4 to 6 days in the pseudopregnant rats, but ovulations did not occur. The 5-mg dose of 70026 inhibited ovulation and interrupted the oestrous cycle in cyclic rats, even though the daily 3-mg dose seemed to have little effect on ovulation, ovarian cyclicity, breeding or conception. In spite of the absence of an ovulation accompanying the induced pro-oestrous and/or oestrous vaginal smears in the pseudopregnant rats, the pattern of the vaginal smears suggested the occurrence of a 'delayed pseudopregnancy' in most of the pseudopregnant rats treated daily with 3 mg, but in few of those treated with 5 mg, 70026.     

Cholinergic, serotoninergic and peptidergic components of the nervous system of Discocotyle sagittata (Monogenea: Polyopisthocotylea)

Cholinergic, serotoninergic (5-HT) and peptidergic neuronal pathways have been demonstrated in both central and peripheral nervous systems of adult Discocotyle sagittata, using enzyme histochemistry and indirect immunocytochemistry in conjunction with confocal scanning laser microscopy. Antisera to 2 native flatworm neuropeptides, neuropeptide F and the FMRFamide-related peptide (FaRP), GNFFRFamide, were employed to detect peptide immunoreactivity. The CNS is composed of paired cerebral ganglia and connecting dorsal commissure, together with several paired longitudinal nerve cords. The main longitudinal nerve cords (Iateral, ventral and dorsal) are interconnected at intervals by a series of annular cross-connectives, producing a ladder-like arrangement typical of the platyhelminth nervous system. At the level of the haptor, the ventral cords provide nerve roots which innervate each of the 8 clamps. Cholinergic and peptidergic neuronal organisation was similar, but distinct from that of the serotoninergic components. The PNS and reproductive system are predominantly innervated by peptidergic neurones.
