Spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) is found in over 3 million ha of rangeland and forests across North America, and evidence supporting the use of biological control as a regional method to reduce infestations and their associated impacts remains inconclusive. Several species of insects have been reported to reduce plant densities in some areas; however, rigorous studies that test combinations of these species and the influence of resource availability are lacking. We examined the singular and combined effects of herbivory by a root weevil (Cyphocleonus achates) and a flower head weevil (Larinus minutus) on the growth and flower production of C. stoebe. We also manipulated soil resource fertility as an additional factor that could explain the outcomes of contradictory biological control herbivore effects on C. stoebe. In a greenhouse study, herbivory by C. achates decreased flower production for plants across all resource environments. In a caged common garden study, the negative effects of herbivory also did not interact with soil nutrient status. However, the presence of plant competition further decreased knapweed growth, and the negative effects of concurrent herbivory by C. achates and L. minutus on plant biomass and flower production were additive. Derived within the context of variable levels of soil nutrient availability and competing vegetation, these results support the cumulative stress hypothesis and the contention that combined above- and belowground herbivory can reduce spotted knapweed densities and reduce the ecological and economic impacts of this species in rangelands of western North America.  相似文献

Pleistocene-age methane seep carbonates from the Eel River Basin, California contain aggregate-like structures composed of tightly-packed hollow spheres that morphologically resemble syntrophic archaeal–bacterial consortia known to catalyze the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Tetragonal microstructures also present in the carbonates resemble seep-endemic Methanosarcinales cell clusters. Despite morphological similarities to the seep-endemic microbes that likely mediated the authigenesis of Eel River Basin carbonates and sulfides, detailed petrographic, SEM, and magnetic microscopic imaging, remanence rock magnetism, laser Raman, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, suggest that these microstructures are not microfossils, but rather mineral structures that result from the diagenetic alteration of euhedral Fe-sulfide framboids. Electron microscopy shows that during diagenesis, reaction rims composed of Fe oxide form around framboid microcrystalites. Subsequent dissolution of greigite or pyrite crystals leaves behind hollow cell-like casings (external molds) — a transformation that occurs on timescales of ~100 kyr or less. Despite their superficial resemblance to morphologically-distinctive extant microbes in local sediments, the presence of acellular precursor grains, as well as of partially-altered transitional forms, complicate the interpretation of these and other framboidal microstructures that have been reported from the rock record.  相似文献

Mechanisms of sodium uptake by roots of higher plants   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The negative impact of soil salinity on agricultural yields is significant. For agricultural plants, sensitivity to salinity is commonly (but not exclusively) due to the abundance of Na+ in the soil as excess Na+ is toxic to plants. We consider reducing Na+ uptake to be the key, as well as the most efficient approach, to control Na+ accumulation in crop plants and hence to improve their salt resistance. Understanding the mechanism of Na+ uptake by the roots of higher plants is crucial for manipulating salt resistance. Hence, the aim of this review is to highlight and discuss recent advances in our understanding of the mechanisms of Na+ uptake by plant roots at both physiological and molecular levels. We conclude that continued efforts to investigate the mechanisms of root Na+ uptake in higher plants are necessary, especially that of low-affinity Na+ uptake, as it is the means by which sodium enters into plants growing in saline soils.  相似文献

Elevated CO2 and O3 alter tree quality and the quality of herbivore inputs, such as frass, to forest soil. Altered quality or quantity of herbivore inputs to the forest floor can have large impacts on belowground processes. We collected green leaves and frass from whitemarked tussock moth caterpillars from aspen-birch stands at the Aspen Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) site near Rhinelander, WI, USA. Small or large quantities of frass, greenfall, or a 1:1 ratio of frass and greenfall were added to microcosms for each FACE treatment (control, +CO2, +O3, +CO2+O3). We measured initial frass and greenfall quality, and recorded microbial respiration, and nitrate leaching over 40 days. Elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) and tropospheric ozone (eO3) significantly altered the carbon, nitrogen, and condensed tannin content of insect frass and green leaves. Although FACE treatments affected input quality, they had minimal effect on microbial respiration and no effect on nitrogen leaching. In contrast, input quantity substantially influenced microbial respiration and nitrate leaching. Respiratory carbon loss and nitrate immobilization were nearly double in microcosms receiving large amounts of herbivore inputs than those receiving no herbivore inputs. Small amounts of herbivore inputs, however, did not significantly alter microbial respiration or immobilization, suggesting that effects of herbivore inputs on soil processes will be detected only at moderate to high herbivory/input levels. These results suggest that subtle changes in frass and greenfall quality may not affect soil nutrient cycling. In contrast, environmental change induced increases in insect population size or frass and greenfall inputs to the soil may substantially impact nutrient cycling.  相似文献

Background

With both shrimp and commercial insects such as honey bees, it is known that stable, persistent viral infections characterized by absence of disease can sometimes shift to overt disease states as a result of various stress triggers and that this can result in serious economic losses. The main research interest of our group is to understand the dynamics of stable viral infections in shrimp and how they can be destabilized by stress. Since there are no continuous cell lines for crustaceans, we have used a C6/36 mosquito cell line infected with Dengue virus to test hypotheses regarding these interactions. As a result, we accidentally discovered two new cytokine-like substances in 5 kDa extracts from supernatant solutions of acutely and persistently infected mosquito cells.  相似文献

The ‘rate of living’ theory predicts that longevity should be inversely correlated with the rate of mitochondrial respiration. However, recent studies in a number of model organisms, including mice, have reported that interventions that retard the aging process are, in fact, associated with an increase in mitochondrial activity. To better understand the relationship between energy metabolism and longevity, we supplemented the endogenous respiratory chain machinery of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster with the alternative single‐subunit NADH–ubiquinone oxidoreductase (Ndi1) of the baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Here, we report that expression of Ndi1 in fly mitochondria leads to an increase in NADH–ubiquinone oxidoreductase activity, oxygen consumption, and ATP levels. In addition, exogenous Ndi1 expression results in increased CO2 production in living flies. Using an inducible gene‐expression system, we expressed Ndi1 in different cells and tissues and examined the impact on longevity. In doing so, we discovered that targeted expression of Ndi1 in fly neurons significantly increases lifespan without compromising fertility or physical activity. These findings are consistent with the idea that enhanced respiratory chain activity in neuronal tissue can prolong fly lifespan.  相似文献
