Background
Assortative mating patterns for mate quality traits like body size are often observed in nature. However, the underlying mechanisms that cause assortative mating patterns are less well known. Sexual selection is one important explanation for assortment, suggesting that i) one (usually the female) or both sexes could show preferences for mates of similar size or ii) mutual mate choice could resolve sexual conflict over quality traits into assortment. Background
Adrenocortical tumors comprise frequent adenomas (ACA) and rare carcinomas (ACC). Human cytochrome P450 2W1 (CYP2W1) is highly expressed in some cancers holding the potential to activate certain drugs into tumor cytotoxins.Objective
To investigate the CYP2W1 expression in adrenal samples and its relationship with clinical outcome in ACC.Material and Methods
CYP2W1 expression was investigated by qRT-PCR in 13 normal adrenal glands, 32 ACA, 25 ACC, and 9 different non-adrenal normal tissue samples and by immunohistochemistry in 352 specimens (23 normal adrenal glands, 33 ACA, 239 ACC, 67 non-adrenal normal or neoplastic samples).Results
CYP2W1 mRNA expression was absent/low in normal non-adrenal tissues, but high in normal and neoplastic adrenal glands (all P<0.01 vs non-adrenal normal tissues). Accordingly, CYP2W1 immunoreactivity was absent/low (H-score 0–1) in 72% of non-adrenal normal tissues, but high (H-score 2–3) in 44% of non-adrenal cancers, in 65% of normal adrenal glands, in 62% of ACAs and in 50% of ACCs (all P<0.001 vs non-adrenal normal tissues), being significantly increased in steroid-secreting compared to non-secreting tumors. In ACC patients treated with mitotane only, high CYP2W1 immunoreactivity adjusted for ENSAT stage was associated with longer overall survival and time to progression (P<0.05 and P<0.01, respectively), and with a better response to therapy both as palliative (response/stable disease in 42% vs 6%, P<0.01) or adjuvant option (absence of disease recurrence in 69% vs 45%, P<0.01).Conclusion
CYP2W1 is highly expressed in both normal and neoplastic adrenal glands making it a promising tool for targeted therapy in ACC. Furthermore, CYP2W1 may represent a new predictive marker for the response to mitotane treatment. 相似文献53.

The alternative explanation, that drift peaks are caused by bottom-feeding, nocturnal predators, has rarely been tested.
2. We examined these hypotheses by collecting invertebrate drift in five streams in northern Finland: one with brown trout ( Salmo trutta , a drift-feeding fish), one with alpine bullhead ( Cottus poecilopus , a benthic fish), one with both species, and two fishless streams.

In contrast, drift was nocturnal in streams with trout and, to a lesser extent, in the stream with bullhead. 4. In laboratory experiments, bullheads were night-active, causing a much higher frequency of drift by touching Baetis at night than during the day. Thus, increased nocturnal drift may serve to avoid both visual predators (a pre-contact response) and benthic fish (a post-contact response). How neurosecretory cells spatially adjust their secretory vesicle pools to replenish those that have fused and released their hormonal content is currently unknown. Here we designed a novel set of image analyses to map the probability of tracked organelles undergoing a specific type of movement (free, caged or directed). We then applied our analysis to time-lapse z-stack confocal imaging of secretory vesicles from bovine Chromaffin cells to map the global changes in vesicle motion and directionality occurring upon secretagogue stimulation. We report a defined region abutting the cortical actin network that actively transports secretory vesicles and is dissipated by actin and microtubule depolymerizing drugs. The directionality of this “conveyor belt” towards the cell surface is activated by stimulation. Actin and microtubule networks therefore cooperatively probe the microenvironment to transport secretory vesicles to the periphery, providing a mechanism whereby cells globally adjust their vesicle pools in response to secretagogue stimulation. 相似文献

Our recent results suggest that 50 Hz magnetic fields (MF) enhance ultraviolet (UV)-induced tumorigenesis in mouse skin. The aim of the present experiment was to study suppression of apoptosis as a possible mechanism for MF effects on skin tumorigenesis. Another aim was to test the importance of a UV and MF exposure schedule, particularly the role of MF exposure prior to UV irradiation. Female mice were exposed to a UV dose of 2 human MED and to 100 microT MF of 50 Hz, using the following exposure schedules: group 1 sham MF 24 h, UV 1 h, sham MF 24 h; group 2 sham MF 24 h, UV 1 h, MF 24 h; group 3 MF 24 h, UV 1 h, MF 24 h. Lamps emitting simulated solar radiation (SSR) were used for UV irradiation. Skin samples were analysed for apoptosis, expression of the p53 gene, activity of the enzyme ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and polyamine concentrations. A significantly (p = 0.017) lower number of apoptotic cells was measured in group 2 compared to group 1. A similar but not statistically significant (p = 0.064) decrease was also detected in group 3. No p53 expression was detected in any sample. The levels of ODC and putrescine did not differ significantly between the UV-only and UV and MF-exposed groups. Spermidine and spermine levels were significantly (p = 0.014 and 0.014, respectively) lower in group 3 than in group 1, but no decrease was observed in group 2. Our findings suggest that SSR induces p53-independent apoptosis in mouse skin and that the apoptotic response may be inhibited by exposure to MF. The exposure schedule did not alter the MF effect. The results do not support a causal role for polyamines in MF effects on apoptosis. 相似文献

Summary Guild structure and coexistence of filter feeding caddis larvae was studied in three lake-outlet streams in northern Finland. Natural stones were used as sampling units, and for each stone measurements of six microhabitat variables were taken. Species and species instar relationships in the multivariate microhabitat space were analyzed by a method based on Principal Components Analysis. Seven species of filtering caddis larvae were found at the study sites, but detailed analysis was restricted to the four most abundant ones (Polycentropus flavomaculatus, Hydropsyche angustipennis, H. pellucidula, H. saxonica). P. flavomaculatus was the microhabitat generalist of the guild, whereas all the hydropsychids were narrowly specialized in at least one larval instar. In all species, different instars utilized the microhabitat somewhat differentially. Moss content and Froude number were significantly different between instar microhabitats in all comparisons. Ontogenetic niche changes not only separated species instars from each other, but also profoundly changed the biotic as well as abiotic environment of the species at different phases of larval development. This may have important effects on the dynamics of interacting species and, consequently, on the guild structure. While some of the more classical models of coexistence may also be relevant for understanding coexistence in this guild of sessile stream insects, ontogenetic niche changes clearly need to be taken into consideration in future studies of guild structure and species interactions of filter feeding caddisfly larvae. 相似文献

The garnet-type phase Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) attracts significant attention as an oxide solid electrolyte to enable safe and robust solid-state batteries (SSBs) with potentially high energy density. However, while significant progress has been made in demonstrating compatibility with Li metal, integrating LLZO into composite cathodes remains a challenge. The current perspective focuses on the critical issues that need to be addressed to achieve the ultimate goal of an all-solid-state LLZO-based battery that delivers safety, durability, and pack-level performance characteristics that are unobtainable with state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries. This perspective complements existing reviews of solid/solid interfaces with more emphasis on understanding numerous homo- and heteroionic interfaces in a pure oxide-based SSB and the various phenomena that accompany the evolution of the chemical, electrochemical, structural, morphological, and mechanical properties of those interfaces during processing and operation. Due to rapid urbanization the conservation and values of urban wildlife are becoming increasingly important study objects. Unfortunately, the lack of historical data makes it difficult to assess the effects of long-term urban land-use changes and human attitudes on local biodiversity. In this paper we show that old newspapers may in some cases provide useful historical data on both urban wildlife and local attitudes towards it. In the city of Turku, southwest Finland, the leading newspaper published 316 observations or reports on local urban mammals, birds and reptiles in 1890–1920, and in addition to these a lot of information on contemporary attitudes towards urban wildlife. At least 12 species of noncaptive mammals, 32 species of birds, and three reptile species were documented in newspapers. The newspaper data seem fairly reliable, and provide valuable information on the development of urban biodiversity. In the study period animals visiting urban areas were often persecuted, in which both adults and children (mainly schoolboys) participated actively. Birds were persecuted less frequently than mammals or reptiles. Some bird species, especially 'song-birds', were actively supported by winter-feeding and by constructing nest-boxes. According to newspapers local people were interested in local biodiversity, especially on phenological events, and benefited from it by getting esthetic pleasure, pet animals, and information on seasonal changes. 相似文献
