The size of brain regions depends on the balance between proliferation and differentiation. During development of the mouse cerebral cortex, ventricular zone (VZ) progenitors, neuroepithelial and radial glial cells, enlarge the progenitor pool by proliferative divisions, while basal progenitors located in the subventricular zone (SVZ) mostly divide in a differentiative mode generating two neurons. These differences correlate to the existence of an apico-basal polarity in VZ, but not SVZ, progenitors. Only VZ progenitors possess an apical membrane domain at which proteins of the Par complex are strongly enriched. We describe a prominent decrease in the amount of Par-complex proteins at the apical surface during cortical development and examine the role of these proteins by gain- and loss-of-function experiments. Par3 (Pard3) loss-of-function led to premature cell cycle exit, reflected in reduced clone size in vitro and the restriction of the progeny to the lower cortical layers in vivo. By contrast, Par3 or Par6 (Pard6alpha) overexpression promoted the generation of Pax6+ self-renewing progenitors in vitro and in vivo and increased the clonal progeny of single progenitors in vitro. Time-lapse video microscopy revealed that a change in the mode of cell division, rather than an alteration of the cell cycle length, causes the Par-complex-mediated increase in progenitors. Taken together, our data demonstrate a key role for the apically located Par-complex proteins in promoting self-renewing progenitor cell divisions at the expense of neurogenic differentiation in the developing cerebral cortex. 相似文献
Globally, mediterranean-climate ecosystem vegetation has converged on an evergreen, sclerophyllous and shrubby growth form. The particular aspects of mediterranean-climate regions that contribute to this convergence include summer droughts and relatively nutrient-poor soils. We hypothesised that winter-precipitation implies stressful summer droughts and leaches soils due to greater water availability (i.e. balance between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration; P–PET) during cold periods. We conducted a comparative analysis of normalised difference vegetation indices (NDVI) and edaphic and climate properties across the biomes of South Africa. NDVI was strongly correlated with both precipitation and P–PET (r2 = 0.8). There was no evidence, however, that winter-precipitation reduces NDVI in comparison to similar amounts of summer-precipitation. Base saturation (BS), a measure of soil leaching was, however, negatively related to P–PET (r2 = 0.64). This led to an interaction between P–PET and BS in determining NDVI, indicating the existence of a trade-off between water availability and soil nutrients that enables NDVI to increase with precipitation, despite negative consequences for soil nutrient availability. The mechanism of this trade-off is suggested to be that water increases nutrient accessibility. This implies that along with nutrient-depauperate geologies and long periods of time since glaciation, the winter-precipitation may have contributed to the highly leached status of the soils. Since many of the ecophysiological characteristics of mediterranean-ecosystem flora are associated with low nutrient availabilities (e.g. evergreen foliage, sclerophylly, cluster roots), we conclude that mediterranean-climates promote convergence of growth-forms in these regions through high leaching capacity. 相似文献
Five species of lsolaimium Cobb, 1920 are described and illustrated: I. nigeriense n. sp., I. multipapillatum n. sp., I. caliIornicum, n. sp., I. papillatum Cobb, 1920, and I stictochroum Timm, 1961. A unique feature in lsolaimium, not found in any other nematode, is the presence of six cuticularized tubes surrounding the stoma and opening on the head. Order Isolaimida Cobb, 1920 is emended to accommodate this genus, which is considered to lie between the mermithoids and the dorylaimoids. 相似文献
A model for several algal species which compete both for light and for nutrients, and which are also subject to settling and diffusion, is considered. The settling speeds and diffusion coefficients are assumed to be small, in a sense to be made precise later, and a singular perturbation argument is used. In certain cases vertical segregation of the algal species is observed, and the mechanism for this is interpreted biologically.Supported by the Danish Natural Science Research Council (Grant No. 11-8321) 相似文献
In the last decade, biological degradation and mineralization of antibiotics have been increasingly reported feats of environmental bacteria. The most extensively described example is that of sulfonamides that can be degraded by several members of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. Previously, we reported sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation and partial mineralization by Achromobacter denitrificans strain PR1, isolated from activated sludge. However, further studies revealed an apparent instability of this metabolic trait in this strain. Here, we investigated this instability and describe the finding of a low-abundance and slow-growing actinobacterium, thriving only in co-culture with strain PR1. This organism, named GP, shared highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (94.6–96.9%) with the type strains of validly described species of the genus Leucobacter. This microbial consortium was found to harbor a homolog to the sulfonamide monooxygenase gene (sadA) also found in other sulfonamide-degrading bacteria. This gene is overexpressed in the presence of the antibiotic, and evidence suggests that it codes for a group D flavin monooxygenase responsible for the ipso-hydroxylation of SMX. Additional side reactions were also detected comprising an NIH shift and a Baeyer–Villiger rearrangement, which indicate an inefficient biological transformation of these antibiotics in the environment. This work contributes to further our knowledge in the degradation of this ubiquitous micropollutant by environmental bacteria.
