Studies examining interspecific differences in sexual size dimorphism (SSD) typically assume that the degree of sexual differences in body size is invariable within species. This work was conducted to assess validity of this assumption. As a result of a systematic literature survey, datasets for 158 insect species were retrieved. Each dataset contained adult or pupal weights of males and females for two or more different subsets, typically originating from different conditions during immature development. For each species, an analysis was conducted to examine dependence of SSD on body size, the latter variable being used as a proxy of environmental quality. A considerable variation in SSD was revealed at the intraspecific level in insects. The results suggest that environmental conditions may strongly affect the degree, though not the direction of SSD within species. In most species, female size appeared to be more sensitive to environmental conditions than male size: with conditions improving, there was a larger relative increase in female than male size. As a consequence, sexual differences in size were shown to increase with increasing body size in species with female-biased SSD (females were the larger sex in more than 80% of the species examined). The results were consistent across different insect orders and ecological subdivisions. Mechanisms leading to intraspecific variation in SSD are discussed. This study underlines the need to consider intraspecific variation in SSD in comparative studies.  相似文献

Most insect populations are exploited by a complex of different parasitoid species, providing ample opportunities for competitive interactions among the latter. Despite this, resource-mediated competition (i.e., exploitative competition) among insect parasitoids remains poorly documented in natural systems. Here we propose a novel way to infer the presence of competitive interactions from covariance patterns in parasitism levels, and illustrate the use of this approach on a relatively well-defined and simple host–parasitoid system. The parasitism levels caused by three parasitoid species on a shared host showed a highly consistent negative covariance among samples. With the levels of parasitism by one species increasing, the levels of parasitism attributable to the two others decreased. Importantly, negative covariance between parasitism levels by different species appeared at high abundance, but not at low abundance of the phenologically earlier parasitoid species. This as well as several other lines of evidence indicates the importance of competitive interactions in this system. Feeding biology and phenology of the parasitoids suggest that competition in this parasitoid assemblage is primarily resource-mediated rather than occurring through direct interference. The species attacking earlier stages of the host are competitively superior to those attacking their host later in the season. Better dispersal ability and use of alternative host species by the inferior species could contribute to the coexistence of these competing parasitoids.  相似文献

During the Fennoscandian ice recession from the eastern Baltic area, the water level in the Lake Peipsi basin was decreasing and reached a minimum at the end of the Younger Dryas Chronozone. The low lake level episode is represented in the basal deposits by a ca. 0.8 m thick bed of coarse detritus gyttja dated to 9.6–9.1 ka 14C BP. The gyttja lies at an elevation of 20–21 m a.s.l., i.e. about 9 m below the present lake level (30 m a.s.l.), and is buried under a 1.5–2 m bed of fine to medium-grained sand. The overall pollen data indicate a shallow-water littoral environment during the gyttja accumulation in the area studied. The diatom flora in the gyttja is dominated by shallow-water benthic and epiphytic taxa, indicating eutrophic littoral conditions at the time of gyttja accumulation. In the uppermost portion of the gyttja sequence the pollen and diatom successions indicate a short period of land emergence when swampy conditions prevailed in the surroundings.  相似文献

Background

Outbreaks and sporadic cases of pneumococcal illness occur among young adults in confined settings. Our aim was to characterize pneumococcal acquisition and carriage among healthy young adults in Israel during military training in confined settings.

Methods

During the years 2007–2008, an observational longitudinal study was conducted in three cohorts of healthy soldiers, during a 7-month basic training period. Epidemiological data, oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal cultures were sampled on 5 occasions: before and 3, 6, 12 and 24 weeks after start of training. Samples were processed within 2–18 hours. Relatedness of isolates was investigated by capsular typing of all isolates and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis to determine acquisition and transmission. Carriage and acquisition patterns were analyzed and multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the impact of time on acquisition after mixing, controlling for other covariates.

Results

Pneumococci were recovered on 202 of 1872 visits among 742 individuals, including 40 different serotypes. Mean carriage prevalence increased in all visits following training initiation. Acquisition during training was high, as 36.9% of individuals acquired pneumococci at least once during training, and for almost one fourth of the whole population this occurred during the first 6 weeks. Significant clustering was noted. Sharing drinking glass/bottle was found to be a significant and common risk factor for pneumococcal acquisition.

Conclusions

Pneumococcal acquisition is highly frequent when young adults live in close contact in confined settings, especially early after mixing.  相似文献

Urinary Lutropin (LH) and Follitropin (FSH) were precipitated with acetone and measured by specific radioimmunoassays. Recovery experiments with special regard to urinary pH values were done by adding 125I-labelled LH and FSH to unprocessed urine. At pH 4.5 68.6% of LH and 66.1% of FSH were recovered. Increasing pH values up to 6.0 resulted in a significant recovery loss of 125-I-LH, but not of 125I-FSH. Immunoreactive FSH concentrations decreased significantly 6 and 48 hours after storage began at room temperature. In healthy males and females we found mean LH and FSH concentrations in 24-h-urine which were similar to those reported by others: LH: males: 22.6 IU/24-h; cycling females: 17.8 IU/24-h; postmenopausal females: 49.1 IU/24-h; FSH: males 6.0 IU/24-h: cycling females: 15.0 IU/24-h; postmenopausal females: 48.5 IU/24-h. Because of their high sensitivity and practicability, we believe that these radioimmunoassays are clinically useful approaches in assessment of pituitary and gonadal disorders in human subjects.  相似文献

As part of a conservation initiative, we released captive-bred individuals of European mink (Mustela lutreola) onto a Baltic island ‘sanctuary’, Hiiumaa (Estonia), and investigated the development of their diet in the wild. Fifty-four animals out of the 172 released were equipped with radio collars and tracked in 2000–2003 intensively after release. Based on the analysis of the contents of 564 collected scats, we monitored how the diet of released individuals changed after release and how this was affected by habitat and by season. Diet changed as they adapted to the wild: some prey consumed immediately after release were later substituted with prey more typical of wild European mink elsewhere. The mink’s tendency to take typical prey increased (crayfish, 3; fish, 1.5; and small mammals, 2 times), while the proportion of atypical prey decreased more than five times in 60 days after release. Once established in the wild, the composition of the diet and its variation between seasons, habitats or weather conditions were similar to that reported elsewhere for wild European mink. There is no indication therefore that the components of the diet provided in captivity persisted in the wild after the adaptation period. We suggest that the adaptation of released carnivores to natural prey merits more attention in reintroduction projects.  相似文献

1.  Habitat fragmentation can affect pollinator and plant population structure in terms of species composition, abundance, area covered and density of flowering plants. This, in turn, may affect pollinator visitation frequency, pollen deposition, seed set and plant fitness.
2.  A reduction in the quantity of flower visits can be coupled with a reduction in the quality of pollination service and hence the plants' overall reproductive success and long-term survival. Understanding the relationship between plant population size and/or isolation and pollination limitation is of fundamental importance for plant conservation.
3.  We examined flower visitation and seed set of 10 different plant species from five European countries to investigate the general effects of plant populations size and density, both within (patch level) and between populations (population level), on seed set and pollination limitation.
4.  We found evidence that the effects of area and density of flowering plant assemblages were generally more pronounced at the patch level than at the population level. We also found that patch and population level together influenced flower visitation and seed set, and the latter increased with increasing patch area and density, but this effect was only apparent in small populations.
5.   Synthesis. By using an extensive pan-European data set on flower visitation and seed set we have identified a general pattern in the interplay between the attractiveness of flowering plant patches for pollinators and density dependence of flower visitation, and also a strong plant species-specific response to habitat fragmentation effects. This can guide efforts to conserve plant–pollinator interactions, ecosystem functioning and plant fitness in fragmented habitats.  相似文献

The Zn-proteinase, isolated from Saccharomonosporacanescens (NPS), shares many common features with thermolysin, but considerable differences are also evident, as far as the substrate recognition site is concerned. In substrates of general structure AcylAlaAlaPhe 4NA, this neutral proteinase cleaves only the arylamide bond (non-typical activity of Zn-proteinases), while thermolysin attacks the peptide bond Ala-Phe. Phosphoramidon is a powerful tight binding inhibitor for thermolysin and significantly less specific towards NPS. The Ki-values (65 μM for NPS vs 0.034 μM for thermolysin) differ nearly 2000-folds. This implies significant differences in the specificity of the corresponding subsites. The carbohydrate moiety is supposed to accommodate in the S1-subsite and the series of arabinopyranosides and glucopyranosides (12 compounds), which are assayed as inhibitors in a model system: NPS with SucAlaAlaPhe4NA as a substrate could be considered as mapping the S1-subsite of NPS. Members of the series with an additional ring (3,4-epithio, 3,4-anhydro-derivatives) turned out to be reasonably good competitive inhibitors (Ki ≈ 0.1-0.2 mM are of the same order as the Ki value for phosphoramidon). The structure of these compounds (8, 9, 11 and 12) seems to fit the size of the S1-subsite and due to an appropriately oriented OH-group in addition, to protect the active site Zn2+.  相似文献
