Aim We wanted to test whether urbanization has similar effects on biodiversity in different locations, comparing the responses of ground beetle (Coleoptera, Carabidae) assemblages with an urbanization gradient. We also wanted to see if urbanization had a homogenizing effect on ground beetle assemblages. Locations Nine forested temperate locations in Europe, Canada and Japan. Methods Published results of the Globenet Project were used. At all locations, three stages were identified: (1) a forested (rural) area, (2) a suburban area where the original forest was fragmented and isolated, and (3) remnants of the original forest in urban parks. These habitats formed an urbanization series. Study arrangements (number and operation of traps) and methods (pitfall trapping) were identical, conforming to the Globenet protocol. Assemblage composition and diversity patterns were evaluated. Diversity relationships were analysed by the Rényi diversity ordering method considering all ground beetles and – separately – the forest specialist species. Taxonomic homogenization was examined by multivariate methods using assemblage similarities. Results Overall biodiversity (compared by species richness and diversity ordering) showed inconsistent trends by either urbanization intensity or by geographic position. However, when only forest species were compared, diversity was higher in the original rural (forested) areas than in urban forest fragments. Within‐country similarities of carabid assemblages were always higher than within‐urbanization stage similarities. Main conclusions Urbanization does not appear to cause a decrease in ground beetle diversity per se. Forest species decline as urbanization intensifies but this trend is masked by an influx of non‐forest species. The rural faunas were more similar to the urban ones within the same location than similar urbanization stages were to each other, indicating that urbanization did not homogenize the taxonomic composition of ground beetle faunas across the studied locations. 相似文献

New analogs of indole phytoalexin 1-methoxyspirobrassinol methyl ether have been designed by replacement of its 2-methoxy group with 2-(substituted phenyl)amino group. Synthesized by spirocyclization methodology, trans- and cis-diastereoisomers of target compounds were isolated and evaluated as potential anticancer and antimicrobial agents. Their molecular geometries were refined by ab initio minimizations. Colonial birds when returning to breed to a previous location can face different settling options regarding their position
in the colony. The decision could be influenced by information gained from the conspecifics’ performance, known as habitat
copying. Colonial Sand Martins (Riparia riparia) cannot use evident physical cues when returning to breeding sites, as their nesting substrate is usually renewing completely.
We investigated settlement decisions of breeding birds in a unique situation at a large colony along the Tisza River, Hungary,
where the nesting substrate was renewed completely in two consecutive years. Breeding birds were ringed at 7-m-long sections
of the colony, with totals of 6 sections in 2000 and 20 sections in 2001. Aggregation levels of philopatric birds were estimated
by calculating individual distances (expressed in sections) between each recaptured bird. From 1,494 adult birds ringed in
the first year, 128 individuals returned to breed in the same colony. The distance to the nearest neighbour in the year 2000
predicted the settlement distance in the next year, indicating a clear preference of breeding closer to the neighbours of
the previous year than expected by chance. Age composition had an uneven distribution in the colony, as sections where no
clumped resettlement occurred had fewer old individuals than the other sections. Morphological measurements were not clearly
different between colony sections. This non-random settlement pattern suggests the existence of breeding groups that could

A series of novel methyl spongoate (1) analogs has been synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic properties. It was found that the nature of the C-20 side chain had significant effects on their bioactivities and some analogs showed higher cytotoxicity than 1 against A549, HCT-116, HepG2, SW-1990, MCF-7 and NCI-H460 tumor cell lines. The pharmacological results confirmed that the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl moiety, a Michael acceptor in ring A, plays a pivotal role in the cytotoxic effect of these derivatives. The dose-response curves for the anticonvulsive activity of sulfated and nonsulfated cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8-SE and CCK-8-NS) against picrotoxin-induced (6 mg/kg SC) seizures were assessed either following or without pretreatment with a single high dose of CCK-8-SE or CCK-8-NS, to examine acute tolerance to the effect after IP injections in mice. As CCK-8-SE or CCK-8-NS pretreatment, a 1.6 μmole/kg dose was injected 2 hr prior to the second injection. No acute tolerance to the anticonvulsive activity was demonstrated, and CCK-8-NS pretreatment significantly potentiated its own anticonvulsive activity. Chronic (8-day) daily treatment with a 0.16 μmole/kg dose of CCK-8-SE or CCK-8-NS antagonized seizures by picrotoxin, presumably in a cumulative manner. To investigate the interactions of CCK octapeptides with other anticonvulsive agents, picrotoxin-induced seizures were antagonized with several doses of diazepam following or without acute, high-dose pretreatment with CCK-8-SE or CCK-8-NS. The two octapeptides only slightly modified the activity of diazepam: CCK-8-SE pretreatment displayed a tendency to antagonize it, while CCK-8-NS pretreatment to potentiate it. The interaction between amino acids was studied by charge-transfer reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography. The dependence of the lipophilicity of Trp on the concentration of other amino acids in the eluent was considered to be linearly related to the strength of interaction. Arg, Asn, Glu, Met, Phe and Thr interacted with Trp; Ala, Gly and Ser showed no interaction. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that the pK value of the amino acid side-chain and the lipophilicity of the amino acid had the greatest impact on the interaction, suggesting the simultaneous presence of weak hydrophilic and hydrophobic bonding forces between amino acids. Sodium acetate in the eluent increased the interactive strength between Phe and Trp; acetic acid and sodium chloride did not influence the interaction significantly.
