In the present study 67 non-anaemic women were randomly allocated to either 100 mg or 15 mg iron daily at about the 10. week of pregnancy. At about week 18, 30 and 36 of pregnancy, as well as 6 weeks after delivery, hemoglobin and the serum concentrations of ferritin, vitamin B12, folates, Zn, Cu and Se were monitored. Dietary allowances of other minerals and vitamins are also increased in pregnancy, and the 15 mg iron tablet was enriched with Zn (10 mg), Cu (2 mg), Se (50 microg), vitamin B12 (3 microg), and folate (0.1 mg). Neither ferritin, nor Cu, Zn or Se concentrations differed statistically significantly between the treatment groups during pregnancy. Ferritin and Zn appeared to decrease approximately parallel to the hemodilution, whereas Cu concentrations increased from a non-pregnant reference mean of 18 micromol Cu/L to a maximum mean of nearly 33 micromol Cu/L during pregnancy. Se decreased concomitantly to about 1.0 micromol Se/L. Serum folate (around 15 micromol/L) was essentially unaffected by pregnancy in the group given multivitamin/mineral supplementation, whereas the mean concentration fell below 10 micromol/L in the group supplemented with 100 mg iron daily. Our results indicate that supplementation of 15 mg Fe daily during pregnancy results in a small reduction of hemoglobin. It is suggested that additional supplementation with folate might be of importance to maintain the serum folate concentration during pregnancy.  相似文献

Summary Factors regulating the proliferation of normal, preneoplastic, and neoplastic rat tracheal epithelial (RTE) cells were investigated to identify changes taking place during the progression of RTE cells to neoplasia. Normal RTE cells exhibit clonal proliferation in a serum-free medium containing pituitary extract, serum albumin, cholera toxin, epidermal growth factor, hydrocortisone, and insulin. All combinations of these six factors were examined for their abilities to support clonal proliferation of normal, preneoplastic, and neoplastic RTE cells. In general, preneoplastic RTE cells required fewer factors for proliferation than normal RTE cells, and neoplastic cells required fewer factors than preneoplastic cells. A common pattern of reductions has been identified in the growth factors required for the clonal proliferation of preneoplastic vs. normal RTE cells and for neoplastic vs. preneoplastic and normal RTE cells. Normal RTE cells exhibit clonal proliferation in a serum-free medium supplemented with a minimum of six factors: bovine serum albumin, bovine pituitary extract, cholera toxin, epidermal growth factor, hydrocortisone, and insulin. Preneoplastic RTE cells exhibit clonal proliferation in a serum-free medium supplemented with four factors: bovine serum albumin, bovine pituitary extract, hydrocortisone, and insulin. Finally, neoplastic RTE cells exhibit clonal proliferation in a serum-free medium supplemented with two factors: bovine serum albumin and bovine pituitary extract. These results suggest that the progression of RTE cells to neoplasia is associated with a series of changes in regulatory pathways that control cell proliferation.  相似文献

Background

No large study has compared the yield of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with clinical examination in order to differentiate lacunar stroke from other stroke subtypes. This differentiation is important for guiding further investigations and treatment.

Methods

Consecutive patients admitted with cerebral infarction were classified according to the Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project scale. Based on DWI and CT stroke was classified as lacunar (LI) and non-lacunar (NLI). Acute ischemic lesion <1.5 cm and located in subcortex or in brainstem were classified as LI. All other infarctions were classified as NLI.

Results

DWI was performed in 419 (69%) patients. Among patients with lacunar syndrome (LACS) 45 (40.5%) had NLI on DWI. All patients with total anterior syndrome (TACS) and 144 (88.3%) with partial anterior syndrome (PACS) had NLI on DWI.

Conclusion

DWI is important among patients presenting with clinical symptoms suggestive of lacunar syndrome to differentiate between LI and NLI. On the other hand, there is good correspondence between TACS or PACS and NLI on DWI.  相似文献

The hypothesis investigated whether exercise performance over a broad range of intensities is determined by specific skeletal muscle characteristics. Seven subjects performed 8-10 exhaustive cycle trials at different workloads, ranging from 150 to 700 W (150 min to 20 s). No relationships between the performance times at high and low workloads were observed. A relationship (P < 0.05) was noticed between the percentage of fast-twitch x fibers and the exercise time at 579 ± 21 W (~30 s; r(2) = 0.88). Capillary-to-fiber-ratio (r(2): 0.58-0.85) was related (P < 0.05) to exercise time at work intensities ranging from 395 to 270 W (2.5-21 min). Capillary density was correlated (r(2) = 0.68; P < 0.05) with the net rate of plasma K(+) accumulation during an ~3-min bout and was estimated to explain 50-80% (P < 0.05) of the total variance observed in exercise performances lasting ~30 s to 3 min. The Na(+)-K(+) pump β(1)-subunit expression was found to account for 13-34% (P < 0.05) during exhaustive exercise of ~1-4 min. In conclusion, exercise performance at different intensities is related to specific physiological variables. A large distribution of fast-twitch x fibers may play a role during very intense efforts, i.e., ~30 s. Muscle capillaries and the Na(+)-K(+) pump β(1)-subunit seem to be important determinants for performance during exhaustive high-intensity exercises lasting between 30 s and 4 min.  相似文献

In 56 males, vasectomized 8 years previously, and in 56 age-matched non-vasectomized controls, a number of secretory products of prostatic, seminal vesicular and epididymal/testicular origin were used to monitor post-operative changes in accessory sex gland function. Significant reductions were observed in seminal plasma volume (3.0 vs 4.9 ml, P less than 0.01), and the total ejaculate contents of zinc (5.1 vs 9.7 mumol, P less than 0.01), magnesium (10.6 vs 26.5 mumol, P less than 0.01), PAP (371 vs 1260 IU, P less than 0.005) and citric acid (76.7 vs 127.9 mumol, P less than 0.05), indicating a major impact on secretions of prostatic origin. Unaltered PGE-1 (54.3 vs 53.2 micrograms, P less than 0.95) and fructose (3.9 vs 4.5 mumol, P greater than 0.1) indicated no effects on the secretory function of the seminal vesicles. A marked reduction was demonstrated in the ejaculatory contents of the polyamines, spermidine (366 vs 650 nmol, P less than 0.005) and spermine (5435 vs 11 804 nmol, P less than 0.05) but not their acknowledged precursor, putrescine, which is also of prostatic origin.  相似文献

This study provoked sex‐specific differences in fat metabolism in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, by dietary administration of tetradecylthioacetic acid (TTA) during their first spring and winter in the sea. The effects of TTA were evaluated in June of the first spring and May of the second spring in the sea, by analysing white muscle‐fat content. Muscle fat in males and females differed significantly as a result of TTA in their diet and diet interacted with the sex of the fish. The fat content during the first spring after dietary TTA was lowered by a greater amount in females than in males, 3·1–4·3%, respectively (P < 0·05). In contrast, during the second spring, fat content was lowered by a greater amount in males than in females, 15·8–16·7%, respectively (P < 0·01). Condition factor followed a similar pattern to the muscle fat. The results indicate that the difference in male and female fat accumulation dynamics is related to sex‐specific reproduction biology of S. salar. In addition, the findings show that it is important to consider the sex of the fish and the season of the year when studying fat dynamics and reproductive biology of S. salar.  相似文献

In a cross-sectional study, the serum concentrations of inhibin B and prolactin of 96 male current welders were compared with the concentrations measured in 96 age-matched referents. Also, 23 patients who were all former welders diagnosed as having welding-related manganism were studied. The current welders' geometric mean (GM) airborne exposure to manganese (Mn) was 121 µg m-3 (range 7-2320). The serum concentrations of prolactin adjusted for age and smoking habits (GM 193 mIU l-1 vs. 166 mIU l-1; p=0.047) and inhibin B adjusted for alcohol consumption (arithmetic mean (AM) 151 ng l-1 vs. 123 ng l-1; p=0.001) were higher in the welders compared with the referents. The whole blood Mn concentration was associated with the serum prolactin concentrations. Tobacco smoking resulted in lower serum prolactin concentrations. The GM serum prolactin concentrations of the patients did not significantly differ from that of the referents, but their AM serum inhibin B concentration was statistically significantly lower. The results may suggest an effect of Mn on the pituitary that is reversible upon cessation of exposure. Lower inhibin B concentrations in the patients could point to a functional impairment of the testicular Sertoli cells, that may be caused by a welding fume component or other factors in their work environment.  相似文献

The quality of DNA microarray based gene expression data relies on the reproducibility of several steps in a microarray experiment. We have developed a spotted genome wide microarray chip with oligonucleotides printed in duplicate in order to minimise undesirable biases, thereby optimising detection of true differential expression. The validation study design consisted of an assessment of the microarray chip performance using the MessageAmp and FairPlay labelling kits. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to demonstrate that MessageAmp was significantly more reproducible than FairPlay. Further examinations with MessageAmp revealed the applicability of the system. The linear range of the chips was three orders of magnitude, the precision was high, as 95% of measurements deviated less than 1.24-fold from the expected value, and the coefficient of variation for relative expression was 13.6%. Relative quantitation was more reproducible than absolute quantitation and substantial reduction of variance was attained with duplicate spotting. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated no significant day-to-day variation.  相似文献
