The late Miocene North African mammalianassemblage is considered here from three viewpoints: survivals, extinctions, and immigrations. The Eurasiatic affinities of the large mammals slightly prevail over the Ethiopian affinities. Amongst the North African large mammals, 4 to 8 taxa are Eurasiatic immigrants, while 4 to 6 are of Subsaharian origin. Contrarily, the micromammalian fauna is highly endemic, with only one species, a murid (Paraethomys miocaenicus), considered here as being related to an Asiatic form (Karnimata darwini). Our study of Eurasian and African Miocene faunas reveals that during the late Astaracian-early Turolian interval, the Saharo-Arabic belt permitted very little latitudinal faunal exchanges. However, during the middle and late Turolian such faunal exchanges became frequent. The micromammal record unequivocally indicates that a brief period of faunal exchange occurred between Africa and western Europe at the end of the Miocene, corresponding with the Messinian Salinity Crisis. The increased intercontinental faunal exchange between Africa and Eurasia during the late Miocene coincides with, and counterbalances the extinction of more than 10 taxa at the Mio/Pliocene boundary.     

Correlation of rotifer associations in a chain of lakes fed by reclaimed sewage

The quantitative composition of the rotifer fauna of seven interconnected lakes located in southern California was studied in a preliminary investigation. The lakes are fed by reclaimed sewage, and the water quality increases rapidly from the first lake, barely able to support life, to a series of lovely lakes stocked with fish and utilized for recreation. The Shannon index of rotifer population diversity showed an appropriate increase. Up to 24 – 28 different rotifer taxa in each lake provided a rich community dominated by Brachionids, Keratella and Trichocerca. The diversity and quantity of the rotifer association then declined again in the last lake. Comparison of the lakes using the Bray and Curtis index of similarity and cluster analysis supported the picture of a lake-chain evolution, a biotic development showing a maximum curve.     

Ethics of a predictive test for Huntington's chorea.

"Index Medicus" and 18 other publications have been consulted in an attempt to provide an easily assimilated selection of the recently published and widely dispersed material relevant to the ethical debate the editors of the "BMJ" called for on 4 March 1978. The medical profession is shown to be deeply divided on the ethics of a predictive test for Huntington''s chorea. Some members are already using the prospect of a reliable test as an inducement to potential transmitters of this incurable hereditary disease to postpone procreation. Other members would prefer to see any future test withheld from every applicant until such time as radically improved means of treatment or a cure is discovered. The evolution of generally acceptable professional guidelines requires further informed debate.     

Improved high-performance liquid chromatography of the new antineoplastic agents bisantrene and mitoxantrone

Bisantrene and mitoxantrone are two new anthracene derivatives which have shown significant antitumor activity against a wide variety of animal tumors and in human phase I and II clinical trials. We have developed a rapid, simple and sensitive sample cleanup procedure and high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) assay for both drugs. This method uses a commercially available mini-cartridge with C₁₈ reversed-phase packing to isolate the drugs from the biological matrix prior to HPLC. For both drugs the average recovery of the assay was 98 ± 6% with a coefficient of variation (C.V.) of less than 7%. Using this new method our assay sensitivity has improved to less than 10 ng/ml for bisantrene and 1 ng/ml for mitoxantrone, allowing us to document a prologned terminal phase plasma half-life for both bisantrene and mitoxantrone. Equilibrium dialysis studies showed that both drugs are highly protein bound. Mitoxantrone appears less stable in human plasma than bisantrene. Recoveries from plasma after a 24-h incubation at 25 and 37°C were 40 and 20% for mitoxantrone and 90 and 85% for bisantrene, respectively. Addition of ascorbic acid prior to incubation of mitoxantrone in human plasma at 37°C resulted in less than a 10% decrease in the latter's concentration over a 24-h period. To maintain sample integrity, all plasma samples should be fortified with ascorbic acid and kept frozen prior to analyses.     

Identification of bacterial chemoattractants for oyster (Crassostrea virginica) hemocytes

The cytoplasmic and cell wall components of the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus megaterium and the cytoplasmic and cell envelope components of the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli were assayed for chemotactic activity for the hemocytes of Crassostrea virginica. The cellular components were separated by differential centrifugation and gel filtration was used to determine the approximate molecular weights of the chemoattractant molecules. Active fractions were assayed for glycoproteins and lipoproteins. As a result, it is known that hemocytes are chemotactically attracted to proteins of approximately 10,000 daltons which are associated with the cell wall of B. megaterium and the cell envelope of E. coli.
