Visually triggered forearm movements were analyzed by an Information Theory approach. Human subjects made smooth movements which were characterized by moderate speeds, ranging about 100 degrees per second, by continuity in the position and velocity traces, and attainment of final average EMG levels before completion of the movement. We calculated the information transmitted by final position, biceps EMG, triceps EMG, and the ratio of the EMGs. The results were: (1) The information transmitted by final joint angle increased with number of targets but gradually levelled off. The maximum value was slightly over 3 bits, corresponding to an equivalent number of less than nine independent arm positions for a single movement. (2) The information transmitted by the ratio of the EMGs exceeds that transmitted by the biceps or triceps alone. (3) A previous theoretical prediction based on a spring model (Sakitt, 1980a) gives a moderately good fit to the experimental EMG ratio as a function of final position over a large range of angles. Our results lend consistency to two ideas about the nature of visually triggered forearm movements. First, our finding about the EMG ratio suggests that the basic motor program for final position is probably in terms of relative allocation of innervations, rather than looking up individual values. Second, single movements of this kind transmit surprisingly little information. A consideration of the storage of information as an energized neuronal state leads to the development of a new type of neural network model which is capable of pattern recognition, concept formation and recognition of patterns of events in time. The network consists of several layers of cells, each cell representing by connections from the lower levels some combination of features or concepts. Information travels toward higher layers by such connections during an association phase, and then reverses during a recognition phase, where higher-order concepts can redirect the flow to more appropriate elements, revising the perception of the environment. This permits a more efficient method of distinguishing closely-related patterns and also permits the formation of negative associations, which is a likely requirement for formation of "abstract" concepts. 相似文献

Summary Fertilization in the freshwater hydrozoanHydra carnea has been examined by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Sperm penetrate the jelly coat which covers the entire egg surface only at the site of the emission of the polar bodies. The egg surface exhibits a small depression, the so called fertilization pit at this site. Sperm-egg fusion takes place only at the bottom of the fertilization pit.Hydra sperm lack a structurally distinct acrosome and in most of the observed cases, fusion was initiated by contact between the membrane of the lateral part of the sperm head and the egg surfacce. Neither microvilli nor a fertilization cone are formed at the site of gamete fusion. The process of membrane fusion takes only a few seconds and within 1 to 2 min sperm head and midpiece are incorporated in the egg.Electron dense material is released by the egg upon insemination but cortical granule exocytosis does not occur and a fertilization envelope is not formed. The possible polyspermy-preventing mechanisms in hydrozoans are discussed.
Hydra eggs can be cut into halves whereupon the egg membranes reseal at the cut edges and the fragments assume a spherical shape. Fragments containing the female pronucleus can be inseminated and exhibit normal cleavage and development. The observation that in such isolated parts the jelly coat will not fuse along the cut edges was used to determine its role in site-specific gamete fusion. These experiments indicate that site-specificity of gamete fusion can be attributed to special membrane properties at the fertilization pit. 相似文献

Initial adjuvant immunotherapy trials have demonstrated a greater disease-free interval in patients treated with bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) compared with historical controls. In this study 149 patients at high risk of recurrence after surgical treatment of local or regional malignant melanoma were given BCG for 2 years and were followed up for a median of 28 months from the start of immunotherapy. The 36 patients in the comparison group had a higher rate of recurrence than the patients treated with BCG, and the rate in the treatment group was close to that reported from a similar study at the University of California at Los Angeles. The relatively long disease-free interval for the high-risk comparison patients in this study suggests that the control groups at other centres may have included patients with unrecognized additional risk. The rates of survival in the Canadian treatment group were also comparable to those reported by other centres. However, reports of a favourable BCG-mediated pattern of recurrence could not be confirmed. Therefore, the routine use of adjuvant BCG immunotherapy is not recommended. 相似文献

The 8-hydroxy derivative of adenine (6-amino-1,7-dihydro-8H-purin-8-one) is produced from adenine by two Oerskovia xanthineolytica strains. This transformation by a microorganism has not been reported previously. No novel products of dissimilation of xanthine (3,7-dihydro-1H-purine-2,6-dione) or hypoxanthine (1,7-dihydro-6H-purin-6-one) were found. Alcohol dehydrogenase of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) has been purified to homogeneity, using affinity chromatography on Cibacron F3GA-agarose. The enzyme is a dimer, Mr 90,000–100,000. The coenzyme is NAD+; no NADP+-dependent activity was detected even in crude extracts. Among saturated substrates, ethanol and acetaldehyde show the lowest apparent Km values (2.67 and 0.174 mm, respectively) and highest V values, supporting a primary role in acetaldehyde metabolism, with action also on “flavor aldehydes”; 2-unsaturated alcohols show still lower Km values, probably due to a more favorable Keq. This enzyme and other plant alcohol dehydrogenases form a definite class, intermediate in specificity between liver and yeast alcohol dehydrogenases: they differ from the former in being essentially inactive on secondary and aromatic substrates, from the latter in showing only a mild decrease in V with increasing chain length of alkyl substrates, and from both in showing the lowest Km as well as highest V on ethanol and acetaldehyde. The tomato enzyme differs from other reported plant enzymes in showing substantial activity on geraniol. Kinetic studies are in agreement with an ordered sequential mechanism. The enzyme is inhibited slowly by iodoacetamide, and reversibly by acetamide and zinc-chelating compounds. 相似文献

To elucidate potential toxic properties of S-adenosylhomocysteine and 5′-methylthioadenosine, we have examined the inhibitory properties of these compounds upon enzymes involved with adenosine metabolism. S-Adenosylhomocysteine, but not S-adenosylmethionine, was a noncompetitive inhibitor of adenosine kinase with Ki values ranging from 100 to 400 μm. Methylthioadenosine competitively inhibited adenosine kinase with variable adenosine below 1 μm with a Ki of 120 μm, increased adenosine kinase activity when the adenosine concentration exceeded 2 μm, and did not appear to be a substrate for adenosine kinase. Methylthioadenosine inactivated S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase from erythrocytes, B-lymphoblasts, and T-lymphoblasts with Ki values ranging from 65 to 117 μm and “k2” from 0.30 to 0.55 min?1. Adenosine deaminase was not inhibited by 5′-methylthioadenosine up to 1000 μm. To clarify how 5′-methylthioadenosine might accumulate, 5′-methylthioadenosine phosphorylase was evaluated. This enzyme was not blocked by up to 500 μm adenosine, deoxyadenosine, S-adenosylhomocysteine, or S-adenosylmethionine and was not decreased in erythrocytes from patients with adenosine deaminase deficiency, purine nucleoside phosphorylase deficiency, or hypogammaglobulinemia. These observations suggest that the inhibitory properties of 5′-methylthioadenosine upon adenosine kinase and S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase may contribute to the toxicity of the exogenously added compound. The toxicity resulting from S-adenosylhomocysteine accumulation intracellularly may be related to adenosine kinase inhibition in addition to disruption of transmethylation reactions. 相似文献
